So I got the Steam version of this game in some bundle and deciding I was in the mood for some classic point and click adventure I fired it up. Funnily enough, I had this game mixed up with the Longest Journey for some reason, so I thought I was in store for what people really consider a masterpiece. I realized my mistake after a few hours of playing and, by that point, it had been apparent.
That's not to say the game is bad though. It is from that era of adventure gaming through and through and I do enjoy that for what it is. I'm 60% through according to my save file and I will definitely see it through to the end. The voice acting can be quite painful, but that's kind of part of the charm for me. Most of the puzzles have been pretty simple, with only one nonsensical head scratchers that typically come with the territory so far. Also, I'm a sucker for its genre of story, full of intrigue and historical mysteries. So yea, not a bad use of my time at all.
I will have to seek out the actual Longest Journey some time, but I'm not regretting spending the dollar I spent for this and one of its sequels (plus some other stuff). We'll see if I ever get around to that one. |

I played this game a while back on the Wii with my sister. It definitely seemed less obtuse than the old PC point 'n clicks, but there are still a few random solutions where I don't see any logic (I guess there may be some for people well-trained in this level of obscurity), so we used an FAQ a few times because who has time for that nonsense? In any case, I don't remember too much at this point, but I remember thinking the story seemed decent, however I felt like George didn't have enough motivation to run around solving all this. He was just a tourist so why was he so interested in figuring out these mysteries? And where did he get the money to travel to all these countries (yet didn't have $50 for a cab ride)? I felt like they could have done more development on him to show the why, though I guess it could have just been as simple as wanting to get the girl, though most of that seemed to develop towards the end I think.
This Director's Cut version also made things a little less consistent. For example, it was obvious which scenes were added to this version, because the sound quality of the voices were much better in some scenes. Most of these seemed to be at the start, so it was a bit jarring for the voices to suddenly take a turn for the worse. We also found it funny how exaggerated some of the accents were, whether that was intentional or not. There were credits on the Wii version, so I don't know why there weren't on the PC version. |
