Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Pretty funny. If someone made an engine that ran on bile, it would only need an internet connection to become a perpetual motion machine.

Assuming that the engine powered the wireless chip.

And that wireless service was uninterrupted.

I've noticed that making levels challenging is a good way to not have anyone finish your levels. What challenge level do you guys generally shoot for?

@GameDadGrant
You don't have Super Mario Maker?! It's sooo goooood.

@Mop it up You'd think I'd be the one getting all of those friendly comments considering how friendly my levels tend to be.

Speaking of friendly Mario Maker levels I just did a remixed version of my most deadly airship levels. Oh how fun, how fun indeed.

@carlosrox

Brought it out yesterday for my nephews and we all had a blast.

Yeah, the only real reason I stopped playing this game was it was too addictive/a huge time sink.

Even last night trying to make a simple level I got caught up in obsessive details, new ideas, etc.

Working on a small collect red coins level.

I will admit though, ever since even before I stopped playing I was over thinking or running of ideas. Making a good level is indeed hard.

I may have already peaked.

@carlosrox

I feel like I may have peaked with my levels. I feel so uninspired now. It was that mixed with Splatoon that took me away.

@DrFinkelstein
I feel pretty inspired usually, but I get caught up in too many little puzzles, gimmicks, overthinking shit, or cramming too much into a level.

It's definitely been a hell of a long time since I uploaded a level though. I'll start with this new one before I finish up old ones. I'd love some honest feedback.

I'd also like to play some of this thread's faves that I've missed.

@Anand Well, you just need to find the right community to get some good plays on more challenging levels. I've started following some makers I found on places like Reddit and GameFAQs, and discovered a few other makers through the game, and they're a better community than just randoms. It's nice.

In any case, I typically try to land a level in the Normal category. Why? I find that the majority of levels end up in Expert for one reason or another, and then all of the auto, music, and other type of levels are in the Easy category. So, Normal has the least amount of competition, which in turn means a higher chance of someone coming across it. Making a level that's challenging, but fair and fun is always a difficult thing to do however, and it's all too easy to make something too tough because a level will always be way easier to its creator than anyone else. I still fall into that trap now and then, but I've gotten a lot better about it.

I've always liked level creation so I've had no trouble remaining interested. It also helps that I started using the homebrew NSMBWii editor back in 2010, which I eventually used to make a whole new NSMBWii game, so I already had a lot of ideas and knowledge to pull from in Super Mario Maker. The ten tips in the manual are things I had already learned in my time, and those are certainly ten good things to follow.

@carlosrox @DrFinkelstein I can't blame you guys, making a good level does take a lot of work and time. I've already clocked in 800 hours and I don't even have 100 uploads yet. Really makes you appreciate the effort Nintendo puts into level design.

The latest course I did, (which I plan on re-uploading with some tweaks) is basically one of my hardest courses now in the NSMB theme so I could add this:

It's way too late for me to be concerned about difficulty at this point.

I am Nostodmous confirmed. I knew this game was coming to 3DS LONG ago!

That was a nice surprise! That stage isn't all that great, but hey. Who am I to complain about getting another stage in a great game? Most of the time I'm playing on the "Omega" version of the stages anyway. So I guess it doesn't really matter.

The Super Mario Maker stage is good fun. I always seem to forget that the game it's based on is out. I should probably grab it at some point. Maybe when it's released on 3DS...

@GameDadGrant You'll really be missing out without the course sharing.

@pokepal148

Well, I'm still getting stages from the "Top-Rated" list of 100 levels made from the Wii U version. I can download those still, and hey. Those are supposed to be the best of the best, yeah? Plus, I'm pretty sure those rotate in-and-out as new stages are made and rankings are changed. Plus the 3DS version has the 100 unique stages made from Nintendo themselves just for this 3DS version. So at the very least, I've got over 200 stages to play out-of-the-box. Plus, isn't the "100 Mario Challenge" also made of randomly selected stages from online?

Yeah, I don't think I'll be missing out on much, LOL.

Besides, I get StreetPasses all the time, so I'm pretty much guaranteed to get new stages that way, too. Plus (and most importantly) I can share and trade with my kids (and even collaborate on the creation of stages!) with this version as well. So yeah. I'm all set.

Top-rated by average users are usually less the best and more WOW LOOK SOMEONE PAINSTAKINGLY RECREATED THIS THING FROM SOME OTHER GAME IN THIS GAME!!!?!!?!

I'd think the main appeal would be playing FRIEND'S stages.

But then again, I don't even own the game so what do I know.
09/15/16, 22:28
Yeah, if you're playing the top-rated levels, then I hope you like automatics and music levels...

I'm still unclear on all of the functionality of the 3DS version. Do we know everything about it yet? Does it allow you to follow makers? I mean, it isn't like the Wii U version allows you to use your friend list. You still have to find a level of your friend's, such as entering in its code, and then follow them after that. I'm also unsure if it'll still let you play levels with the Mystery Mushrooms, and just replace them with something else. Quite a few of mine might be unplayable on 3DS...

@Zero Why don't you have it? So awesome!

@GameDadGrant
You don't get to play my stages, so nope you're not all set.

;)

And my new course is done! It took maybe 2 sessions to make this stage, which was still prob a few hrs worth of design. I wasn't a huge fan of this course until I saw my brother try it and it made me enjoy it.

It's been so long! I like that I made a new idea from scratch and uploading it instead of finishing off an old one. Cool! Very happy I got one done again!

I tried to make a shorter level because I feel mine always end up too long. It's definitely not perfect but give it a try and give me some feedback!

@Mop it up I've been uber busy and have a bunch of unplayed games and mostly haven't bought any new games in a year or so outside of smaller indie games and such. Though I did finally get Yoshi.

Also what with spending so much time making my own game I feel like I just don't have the interest to design stages. I need a break from that kind of thing! So I'd mostly be buying it just to play other people's stages, and my experiences with user-designed stages are always hit or miss.

Someone already played it 4 times and quit? Haha what?

@Zero
This game is insanely addictive.... Especially if you enjoy making courses and truly want to make inspired designs.

Time to get a teaser thing for my stage from miiverse screenshots.

Experience the thrills of my most popular airship stage, redesigned and remastered for added challenge and fun!

Find hidden secrets, including the eight red coins needed to challenge Bowser and Bowser Jr. and get the true (For the record, The Bowser battle itself is easily the best one I've ever done.)

Can you survive the perilous journey?

I will be uploading the final version of this stage TONIGHT!
