Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

@Anand Sounds awesome, do eet!

@Mop it up

Even though it was unintentional, I think that falling spike top is a good random element. It kept my guard up in an enjoyable way.

Yeah, there aren't any other similarities to that scene other than it being underwater. I was thinking about using a P-switch to represent Genie's Lamp and have it open an exit since Genie saves Aladdin in that scene, but I wasn't sure how well it would come across.

I agree. You know how some Nintendo games have prompts that recommend taking a break? I haven't seen any of those in Super Mario Maker, but it's good advice for that game!

I have taken the plunge and begun dabbling in the art of Mario Maker!
Have yet to unlock much, but I have made a few short fun stages with my limited resources. I am rather pleased with how they came out.

Pipes In The Meadow/6AE2-0000-0196-B8C7
Spinning Mad/394F-0000-0196-C750
Watch Your Head!/06C5-0000-0197-9852

I don't have too much to say about them. Watch Your Head! is probably my favourite. Pipes In The Meadows is really basic, but I like that, not every stage needs to be difficult or complex. Spinning Mad is me messing around with spin jumps.

Now onto my critique of Mario Maker. So far I am loving making and playing levels, but finding levels is a major issue. To find levels my Friends have made I have to find their Mario Maker profiles first, even if we are already friends. There also isn't an easy way to search in game. Plus apparently stages are being deleted now if they don't have enough stars which is ludicrous to me. How can people star stages they can't find?

Uploaded a new level last night:

Super Shmupio Bros. - It's a SHMUP style level, duh!

@Pokefreak911

I'll give your levels a try the next time I boot the game up.

For finding friend's levels, it's probably best to go to the Mario Maker Bookmark website. Log in using your NNID, go to your profile page, then you'll see a list of all of your friends who have Mario Maker. From there, you can view a list of their levels and even bookmark them to play later.

@canonj

Bookmarked and I'll give it a shot later! I've yet to play a shmup level since that update so I'm curious to see how it works. One thing I like is that the Fire Flower actually acts as an upgrade and has you fire triple shots instead. Pretty neat!
01/19/16, 15:52
@VofEscaflowne

Don't forget that you can charge your shot by holding B. You'll need to use this to break through blocks that can't be blasted using normal shots.

Edit: I see you've already played and completed it. Thanks for the star!

@canonj

Yeah, already knew about that from the trailer reveal. Just played your level and it was pretty fun! Nothing too challenging but nice difficulty ramp up at the end with the scrolling speed increase and all of the obstacles. Really enjoyed it! I like the new mechanic that this feature adds to the game. I wanted to try and fit it into one of my level ideas I had a while back but I'm still struggling with how to get it to work.

@Pokefreak911 Nice, I'll be sure to check them out later!

@Octorockin Ha ha, yeah, that's true about the break prompts. This is definitely the kind of game where it's easy to sit down and not notice the hours whittling away, whether it be absorbed in making stages or playing a big string of them. I think the manual mentions something about taking breaks as one of its maker tips, but that would be it.

@canonj I'll try this later too. It's interesting how many elements can work as a shmup stage!

I'll probably try making my own shmup stage at some point, just because it's there. However, I don't play shmups and don't particularly like them, so any stage I make probably won't be very good. But gotta try right?

@VofEscaflowne Didn't you already play Octorockin's shmup level?

@Mop it up

Oh right, oops Forgot about that.
01/19/16, 19:38
@canonj
And I shall give your level a try next time I boot the game up!

New stage!!

Hot Spike Skip // C92D-0000-019D-30FD

Funnily enough the skip in the title means more than you skipping across the platforms. You can skip large parts of the level if you wish to. I could have removed that and made it so you can't, but I think that would have just made the stage look cluttered.
01/20/16, 07:00
@Pokefreak911 Pretty decent for your first tries. I'm a fan of classic-style levels so yeah, no need to fill every space with something. The first level could probably use a Super Mushroom, though, unless I missed it... That'd help with the clear rate. I'd be interested in seeing what else you make.

@canonj Nice job with the difficulty curve. I kept losing the flower power so I guess I'm still not great at shmups even in the Mario setting. Though, part of it is that I keep forgetting that Mario won't take damage if the lower half of the copter is hit by enemies or shots, and so I always move around things more widely than I might need to.

@VofEscaflowne By the way, have you been making any levels recently? You were doing some interesting things in your levels so I'd be curious what else you might come up with.
01/25/16, 21:15
@Mop it up

I've been meaning to but playing a bunch of other games, I haven't touched the editor in a while. I wanted to create a sort of follow up to one of my levels but I'll see how I can make it work. Have a few ideas for it though.
01/25/16, 22:24
I've been forgetting to post about my stuff, here are a few more from me:

Flip-Flop Folly / SMB / D7B8-0000-0192-4AD4
What's that beneath you? Is it a reflection? A parallel world? Who can say, but if you pay attention you might find an easier way through...

Modern Gaming in a Nutshell / SMB / 416A-0000-01A0-41B2
This level is sort of my commentary on modern gaming and contains some of the problems I have with it. It's probably yet another one of those things that's only funny to me, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Abr. Super Mario Bros. / SMB / 2E86-0000-0199-5BCE
I've been seeing quite a few people remixing a level from a previous game, so it gave me the idea to try this: This level contains one scene from a level in each world of the original SMB. Can you recognise which level each screen is from?

SMB 1-1 if Miyamoto Were a Troll / SMB / ED23-0000-019D-5183
In this version of alternate history, Miyamoto is just another troll like the majority of people in Mario Maker. I also see a lot of people have remixed SMB 1-1, so of course I had to come up with one meself, and I hadn't seen anyone do this one yet. This is likely also yet another thing only I find funny, however I do understand that I made a terrible level on purpose, so I don't expect people to play/complete/star it. But maybe still get a laugh out of the idea!
01/26/16, 23:12
Hm, I didn't want to double-post, but I guess I have no choice if I want to mention some of my newer levels...

Jump, Duck! / SMB / ED06-0000-01A6-4BC5
This level is inspired by a minigame in Fuzion Frenzy called Twisted Systems, where you simply jump over or duck under obstacles of increasing speed. We dubbed it "Jump Duck." I guess it also has some similarities with those speeder bike levels in Battletoads. This one could be tough, so I hope your reflexes are sharp!

Buried Relic / SMB3 / 07D4-0000-01AA-7B2F
Inspired by a 99-floor dungeon in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon of the same name, this is probably my lengthiest level yet... but certainly not 99 floors worth! What's buried below? You'll have to dig to find out, but be careful, some of those old contraptions might still be operational...

Gloomy Glimpse / SMB / D2D4-0000-01AD-FA00
What is it you're glimpsing? The future? The past? An alternate universe? Who can say...

Tower Defence! / SMB3 / FAD0-0000-01B7-21F9
Defend your tower to the bitter end! Don't let it get destroyed before you're able to escape!

Cool, I will try to check out some of your levels Mop. I haven't booted up the game in a while but it's worth it check out NW created stuff. I just find it really difficult to find good levels made in the general community. Most of it is gimmicky crap or musical stuff.
02/17/16, 21:34
@anon_mastermind Yeah, making runs through the 100-Mario mode can be a real crap shoot. I've actually come across a few cool Makers that way, but, it's a rare occurrence and it's after playing the mode about 90 times. There is a lot of troll stuff out there, too. And auto levels.

If you can manage to find a good maker though, there's some great stuff out there. I've been impressed what's been possible with this toolset and some creativity.

I have some gimmicky levels in my portfolio, however, I still try to make those ideas work as if they appeared in a more traditional Mario game. I also try to not make anything too difficult, so as to appeal to a wider amount of people. However, difficulty balance can be tough to achieve, since a level will always be easier for me since I made it and I know it. I try my best, though!
02/17/16, 21:44
I finally booted up this game again after a long time. Still such a mind blowing experience.

I've slowly been plugging away at ideas I mentioned here quite a while back but I find myself really over thinking my levels and trying too hard to get a good hook/gimmick into them. It feels too vanilla without something to make it stand out but it's also wasting my time and it's obvious I'm trying too hard.

I noticed Mop has the "world record" on a bunch of my stages lol! She even has what sounds like a pretty insane time on my stupid Cheep Cheep P Switch water level! Can I compete for the record as well or is that just for other players??

Edit: Just skimmed a bit of the more recent posts. WAT? Levels get deleted now??? Why??

Ah so Mop just got the game recently. Sounds like you enjoy making more Nintendo style classic levels, nice! Me too, for the most part!

@carlosroxNo, you can't set a time record for your own uploaded stage. You might be able to if you created a different user on your system, then used it to play your uploader account's stages.

I don't specifically try for records, they just sort of happen sometimes. The time trial thingie was added in a more recent update, so, it's more common to get a new record on older stages since most of its players played it before the times were tracked.
02/17/16, 22:45
Playing this game for Twitch users has kind of...Well it's getting a little tiresome. It's fun to have people come in and submit levels but sometimes they can be really demanding. I know it's mostly kids but I'm not sure how much I can get trolled anymore.

But at the same time, no one watches our channel unless we play Mario Maker! Not completely true, but that's where the majority of our followers come from.
02/18/16, 18:09
I seriously don't get the fascination the world seems to have with live streaming. I get how it's fun for the streamer, but the viewer?? Huh? Why do tens of thousands of people join in on some random live stream?

Like, I'd like to live stream if I could get an audience, but I have next to no interest watching someone else play a game.

I'm truly amazed that this thing is this huge. It's so weird to me.

I also feel the same about podcasts and stuff. Even gaming channels I like, I see a cast or stream and I think to myself it's a giant waste of time. These things are usually 1-3 hours. How do people even have time for this?
