Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

@ploot

Yeah you lose the plays but at least you keep the stars as far as I know.

Oh shit. And this is a free update? Nice.

This will bring me back. I've been on hiatus for awhile now. Never even finished some of the stages I had going.
10/27/15, 18:36
That sounds like a solid update.

I hope they also make it easier to find good levels in general. At the moment, too much research on the internet is needed to find the great levels that are hiding in the game.

I kind of feel a desire to go back and taunt somebody I got into an argument with on Reddit who said "checkpoints are never happening. Get over it." I guess I'll be mature and restrain myself though. Hah.

I am very pleased to hear it, though I'm not very surprised... figured they heard the cries. It's easily one of the biggest complaints and such an easy fix. The ability to make items based on whether you are small or Super Mario is also cool, though it never bothered me as much as I thought it would have.

This will make the game so much better. Guess I'm going to be going back and adding in checkpoints and retweaking just about every one of my levels. It will be cool to fix all the things I've regretted about each of them and hope people actually finish them next time around.

Posted another level a few days ago:

@Hinph

For you and others who add checkpoints or update levels, be sure to let me know the changes so I can update the spreadsheet and ensure no broken links/codes in there.
10/28/15, 17:34
Lol, I entered the title of my level wrongly in the spreadsheet.

pinny Hat High Jinx
should be
Spinny Hat High Jinx

Can it be changed?
10/28/15, 22:58
@DrFinkelstein

For sure! It would be nice if maybe Nintendo allows us to just reupload the levels without having to change IDs, but I somehow doubt that.

I'll wait until I've finished all the ones I want to update so you aren't overwhelmed and can just do it all at once.
10/28/15, 23:41
Will I ever catch up, create another stage, or play this game again? Who knows.

@achhibbar

...do you mean SPINY hat? You're misspelling it again, oh no!

In all seriousness, I think you can just re-enter it again, and Fink can delete the incorrect one.
10/29/15, 00:19
Either way works Achhibbar. But I'll modify the list so you don't need to re-type.
10/29/15, 02:19
wonderful update...I was making my own checkpoints lately - awesome.
10/29/15, 04:57
Lol, yes it's Spinny hat.

I should have just named it Propeller Hat High Jinx, but it just didn't roll off the tongue as well...

They shipped a copy from Gamefly today, so I'm looking forward to it arriving next week! Will also likely be my last rental before cancelling Gamefly after years and years, so it will be fitting in some ways that it's a Mario game.
10/30/15, 22:18
@J.K. Riki Oh Gamefly. Good times. Don't worry, they'll occasionally give you a free month or a $1 month to try and lure you back. I've found it to be a nice surprise every year or so to get a month to cram a few games in that I've missed out on.

@nate38

Good to know! I really enjoyed my time renting things (helps that the distribution center is like 5 minutes away, lol) but we're going to simplify life at our house and it's an extra bill we just don't need. Usually one game sits in the Wii U or DS unplayed for weeks and that's not worth the 14 or 16 bucks every month.

I read an article by some guy recently who said he signs up every year for two months on the two-game-plan and just plays through all that year's big releases, and then cancels it until the following year. That sounds like a pretty reasonable way to try out the major titles out there, actually, AND make sure games don't just sit around in their envelopes. Maybe I'll try that.

So anything I should know about Mario Maker before it arrives? I hear of something called the 100 Level Challenge or something like that? Seems popular, so I'll probably play that instead of actually making many levels...
10/30/15, 22:35
Mostly you should just play levels made by your pals at Negative World. You'll have a better time than the 100 Mario Challenge.
10/30/15, 23:11
@kriswright

Yeah, but then I have to enter CODES and stuff, right? Uhhg. I just want entertainment delivered to me without any woooork... :/
10/30/15, 23:17
@J.K. Riki
It's actually not too bad--just adding a single code per person will let you add them onto your friend list in-game to not require any more codes!

Of course, that one code per person is still woooork... :/
10/30/15, 23:23
@TriforceBun

Yeah, but if it's just one per person, I guess I can do it. Sigh... These levels better be amazing, people. Don't make me go through all this for nothing, s'all I'm saying...

I guess I just go through all 50 pages of this thread and add the ones I find from individual folks? Maybe I should start writing them down now, before the game gets here.
10/30/15, 23:25
Use the Google doc DrFinkelstein created. It has all of our levels in a convenient list.
