Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Gonna finally finish another stage tonight. Couple different little ideas. I'll tweak it as quick as I can and upload it so I can start something new.

Haven't had too much free time these days.

I finally did 100 Mario challenge on Normal (I unlocked Bowser Jr) and attempted Expert. I got to the last 2 levels before I realized I wasn't gonna make it with so few lives left. Some bad levels in there, and a few standout ones that I favorited.

Still hyped for DLC for this game. I'd take more sound effects and especially music.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about my latest level. I feel like it's way too easy. Otherwise I think it has some neat ideas and is fun enough.

I think there's some pretty nice secrets in here too. One is in plain sight yet I really doubt people would think to check it. Some nice misdirection. It's a completely optional one. It's a secret room :)

New level:

Sink the Ship!

Go through an airship, then sink it into the sea, and escape! This was tricky since I had to make two versions of the same stage. Involved lots of drawing.

Peter's brutal stages got me wanting to make a tough level myself. To heck with stars for this one--it's time to take the gloves off!

And so begins my "Extra-Spicy" line of stages--levels designed to make even the most hardened Mario vets break a sweat. Can you handle the heat?

I made a couple more stages.

Grab That Star! - EAC8-0000-0086-941A
Have Yoshi gobble up the star at the beginning and don't let go of it until you reach the end of the level!

The Helpful Lakitu - 342B-0000-0086-97B5
Mario finds an ally inside of a ghost house.

@TriforceBun

That stage is really tough, but I think I'm getting close to the goal point. It's fun!

@TriforceBun

Your Fallen Kingdom stage was pretty great. I love how you had both 1-1 and 1-2 represented in the same stage.

@DrFinkelstein

Yes, that was pretty awesome. Good Castlevania vibe, too.

Between this game and Splatoon, I've realized that I have a problem with playing games so much when I first get them that I burn myself out on them. I've been messing around with the editor a little bit here and there, but I seem to have run out of ideas and a real drive to complete levels.

@Hinph

For me it's been mostly a matter of not having the time to really work on it. But I've also noticed that my standards have already gone up, partly because you guys have made so many excellent levels. So things I would have posted 2 weeks ago don't really seem good enough now.

@kriswright

That too is probably a large part of it! I know that the levels I've been messing around with lately aren't as good as even my own best work, let alone some of the great stuff I've seen from others.

I guess that's probably a pretty normal thing to feel in a creativity focused hobby though? It's good to want to do quality work, of course, but we probably shouldn't feel completely discouraged from uploading stuff as long as it's reasonably fun to play. I mean, let's be honest... our stuff around here is like gold compared to the majority of levels people are making. Bwhaha.

@Octorockin
Bwahaha, sweet revenge for that Wiggler stage! Congrats on passing it though--I'm hoping it's one of those stages where you get the hang of each section and it subsequently gets easier to get further as you play it.

@DrFinkelstein
@TheOldManFromZelda
Thanks! I wanted it to be kinda sad and spooky. It was originally going to be all of world 1, but I think I was risking running it a little long then (and 1-1 and 1-2 are much more iconic than 1-3 and 1-4).

@Hinph
@kriswright
Yeah, don't worry too much about making each level THE BEST EVER or whatever--as long as it's fun to play through! After all, you can't lose stars from stages.

@nate38
Me too. I might take another stab at this soon though. But man, there's some pixel-perfect precision required at times...

I made a relatively simple one just to play around.

It's tough to beat, but it was tough to make, too! Good luck to you if you give it another attempt!

@TriforceBun

It was fun figuring each section out. The spin jump segment initially gave me a lot of trouble, so it felt good to get the hang of it.

I am once again caught up on NW stages! All completed and explored.

To celebrate, I created a pretty simple stage, Margarine Bridge.
I really wanted to call it "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter Bridge" but it just wouldn't fit. Boooo!

My usual secret houses and such apply. I don't care if it's getting old!

I've made some levels that I'd love to upload... buuuuut my area is flooded, and our internet is out

Don't come visit Charleston this weekend.

Just uploaded another level, this time not as troll-y as my last one.
