Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

@carlosrox
You have to delete it and treat it as a new upload. Kind of cumbersome.

@anon_mastermind
I'll try it right away!

I'm still working on unlocking things. What's the fastest way to do that aside from resetting the clock?

@Beardednerd

Double-check your stage code and I'll tell you!

@ploot

For which stage?

EDIT - Ah! Creationary is actually: 8908-0000-003A-6703

@ploot
Wait, why do I have to delete it? Is that a rule? Why can't both be up? This won't be the same file and the name would be different too.

Finished my level! Happy with how it turned out. Actually wanted to do more but I reached the limit apparently! It's not too hard of a level (I hope!) and even has a boss battle. I was struggling with how to do it but I think it turned out alright!

09/16/15, 07:24
@carlosrox
You can keep both up! Sorry, I thought you wanted to replace your level.

@Beardednerd
I've posted this a few times in here already, so I'll shoot you a PM.

EDIT - That code still doesn't work!

Thanks for the info.

Okay, I need serious help. I've clocked 22:42hrs into Super Mario Maker in only 7 plays. All to create one level.

I finally decided it was ready to upload, if only to stop the madness, but even uploaded and done I know I'll end up tweaking it. It's not even that inventive of a course. I mean, I like it quite a bit, but to spend so long on one course is crazy. I have an immense amount of respect for those that do this professionally.

Anyway, if anyone wants to try it out, I added it to the list...

Now onto my next course creation, I guess. *gulp*

Ugh. So my water level may be strangely broken actually. And it's at the flag. My brother mentioned there's next to no gap at the flag sometimes. And I think that happens depending how fast you get there, for some fucking dumb reason. I knew this game had a wonky enemy spawn system. That's really disheartening. The gap I speak of might not even exist if you go through the last part wrong somehow. Man, that's honestly really fucking dumb. How the fuck am I supposed to fix that? I have no idea. I had it planned perfectly. Moving stuff over will only fuck it up.

Just played it and it was enjoyable Though I had invisible blocks kill me a few times. Not sure if that was intentional or not on your part. Also there's a spiky helmet just before the fat hammer bros which I assume is to guard against the hammers. Can you actually use it from the item box? I thought it had to drop on your head which then has Mario wearing it but if it's just on a flat surface, you'll instead carry it. I did explore the top portion first but then died so I didn't make it all the way through on that path. It seemed sort of trolling on your part there though

Fun stage! I did encounter a couple of those deadly invisible blocks though. I'm going to check it again tomorrow to see what I missed.

@carlosrox
Yeah, the couple times I legitimately made it to the flagpole I couldn't get any further. That's why I cheated it.

@VofEscaflowne
Duck while holding one of the helmets and it'll pop onto your head.
09/16/15, 08:06
That's fuckin' lame. It seems the gap I designed is only there when you go slowly?

Yeah I noticed pretty quickly when playing this game the first day that something was up with the way enemies spawn. If its gonna cause issues like this then I must say that's pretty disappointing. I placed them carefully and tweaked it tons. To have it break because of dumb shit like a player activates the enemy off by a pixel or something then its just super obnoxious.

God damn. What a fuckin bummer.
09/16/15, 08:10
@VofEscaflowne

Thanks for playing it! But, no, I don't add in cheap ways to die, so whichever invisible block killed you wasn't intentional. See, more tweaking I need to do! As for the spiky helmet, yes, if you grab it and press down you'll wear it. I really like that item. But, trolling? Also not intentional. I just wanted to create multiple paths with varying levels of difficulty. You can take the top route the whole way, or the bottom, or mix it up!

@ploot

Really? I'll have to play through it again to see which ones could be causing the problem. I'll admit I made use of a lot of invisible blocks, but mostly to disguise an alternate route, or block a route from being taken.

I used so many items and such that I maxed out my coins, enemies, platforms, etc. It kind of became a goal to do so by the end - hence my course's title. Haha.

@NoName

Hmm, I took a door near the end and it seemed to have brought me on the top path near the beginning with a laughing noise so I assumed that was a troll attempt on your part
09/16/15, 08:13
@VofEscaflowne

Yeah, but you landed on a safe platform with access to the easier top half of the course. It was either there, or just above the goal post. I mainly just wanted to use a door and make it look like a SMB3 Toad house. And the fish, if you found it, could be seen as trolling, but just before that you're given a mushroom. So, I consider that being silly/fun.

A few questions about Mario Maker:

1) Can you create progression such as Level 1, 2, 3, etc. If so, can you do it with levels you download?

2) Can you create a map like in Super Mario Bros 3, World, and New?

3) Can you create endings?

4) In other words, can you create a full Super Mario game?

Here's the ID for my latest course!

Pesky Passengers - Mario has to ride platforms with some unexpected company as he makes his way through Bowser's castle.
1417-0000-0040-20C8

It was a ton of fun to make, and I put a lot of thought into its various challenges. I hope you guys enjoy it.

@sirmastersephiroth

I don't think you can do any of those things. The 100 Mario Challenge mode mixes up our creations and presents them on a simple world map, but you can't make one yourself.

Now that you mention it, it would be cool if there were blank, themed world maps that we could fill with levels that match their respective styles.

Did the code work for my castle level?
