Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

I really like playing with spacing and forcing the player to deal with certain situations. Almost like telegraphing. I can't stand those stages I've tried that are too hard, randomly placed shit, or all these blinds spots. Clarity is a must for me.

Man, I got a lot of stages to catch up on..

And Finkbomber, dump Nikki's duplicate entry! Its making EVERYONE mad!

@carlosrox

Yup. I play each area obsessively trying to make it interesting and fair. I've been following Igarashi's game development rule of "if the creator can't get through it without taking a hit, it's bullshit."

The only level I got sloppy on was my second because I was designing it with my brother. He had to get to sleep but wanted to upload it that night, so I didn't get to polish it fully. The randomness of some of it makes it a little too dependent on luck on some playthroughs... some people seem to like that though.

If I ever see a level that is cluttered with nonsense in 100 Mario mode, I immediately opt out.

I just threw out an hour of work on a level because I couldn't make it interesting or fun. Creative juices aren't flowing at all today, so I'm probably going to take a day off and just play all of your guys' stuff.

It may sound silly, but I really wish I could smoke a little pot before designing my courses. A little bit of that stuff always makes me more creative... damn drug testing.

Haha. I just got home finally to enjoy the game with my headphones, play it loud, and make the experience personal. And I have my pot with me :)

My friend will be over in about an hour or so. See what I can cook up in that time.

Time to dive in!!!

@NoName

I deleted mine, so if it can be removed from the list (sorry) so as avoid anyone potentiality waiting his/her time trying to access it, that would be great.

@carlosrox

Sounds like a good time. I'm jealous. Drinking beer and designing/playing is the same experience, only with a buzz... just not beneficial!

Created a new level called Home Invasion. You go from room to room beating challenged (they aren't too hard) to beat the level. It is mostly supposed to be fun and not frustrating! Please let me know what you think!

Finished my 4th level! Hope you guys enjoy playing this one.

WHOA! That Koji Kondo code is SO SMALL!

The one at the end with Miyamoto's signature is nifty too!

Curious how Smerd managed to find my other published level. It was kind of a beginner level, so I didn't post it here. Yet Smerd has played it. How that be?

Once you've played someone's level you can click the heart icon and follow them. This let's you see everything they've uploaded. It's more or less like a friends list. Just more cumbersome.

@kriswright

I added you game code then followed you....

It posts all your uploaded levels

@Smerd

What the Smerd?

@carlosrox

I'll beat your Final Fantasy Level soon - I had to bail as it was getting late..

@kriswright
I look forward to your other levels -

There are a few levels that I beat but forgot to star so I have to go back but I usually don't star levels that I haven't beaten yet - I have to admit that NW's levels have some serious challenge overall. Take a look at your clear rating...some are below 1% ! How much time do you spend testing/beating your own level (start to finish) before you upload?

I'm curious - Pokefreak - your level is insane. I'll beat it soon but trying to kick bombs over to blow an opening in a pipe is hard cause you can tend to cancel the bombs out if they touch each other.

Ploot - I died right at the flagpole as I didn't forsee bowsers fire breath raining down on me in all 16bit glory - I just laughed.

@Smerd
ARGH! That only happens a small percentage of the time. I shouldn't have given him wings.

Sorry about that.

These levels are inspiring! Makes me want to start doing something more creative! I had fun playing with vines on Audrey II's Mothership. It's the only way I've found to get a jungley kind of vibe.

I thought of a really neat feature this game could have. Of course, I have no way of pitching it to Nintendo, so I'll just talk about it here.

Know how you can download somebody's level and mess around with it but you can't reupload the modified version? You should be able to... not claiming it as you own, of course, but rather like "response" videos exist on Youtube. People could make easier, harder, or just remixed versions of stuff they like (or hate).

Maybe Nintendo already thought of this and is just trying to save server space though.

Well now, I see that my little doomship level is claiming blood... excellent...

A course that uses poor Goombas to take you further. The concept is explored in increasingly tricky ways for those that want all the coins and to hit the top of the flag pole.
