Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

I believe I played that one. If I didn't leave feedback I'm sorry but I think I was the star you're talking about! Is that the one that says I Love SMM at the end?

12 people have played Cave Uno but only one star so far - If they aren't goin to star it, I want feedback!
It is impossible to comment on a level without also starring it, I'm pretty sure. I've played a few stages in the 100-Mario Challenge where I wanted to say how crappy they were, but I don't want to leave them a star. Seriously, most of the levels I've played on Expert 100-Mario Challenge have been just awful.

I've also been really stingy with my stars. I'm only starring levels that I really want to come back and play again, or were very cool the first time. I think I've only handed out one or two.

And man, you guys are really cranking out stages. I've been playing them for hours, and it still seems like I'm just falling behind!

I find it super silly that they left out a filter to see what levels your friends have made. It has to be a really easy thing for them to patch in.

Made a castle level just for fun...my levels pretty much pale in comparison to what some of what you guys have done, heh.

I made this stage yesterday: Platforming Peril

Don't worry, it's not too hard.

I'm sad I can't get this game yet, as I feel at the pace this is going, I'll have missed out on everything even if it's only a month later. I also feel like all the good ideas will already be taken by then.

That brings up a curiosity question: Does anyone else worried their ideas will be taken, and then you can't use them yourself because everyone will say you stole them and/or call you a copycat? Anyone have thoughts on that?

HOT STAR
DEC6-0000-0024-38DF

I spent a lot of time on this one just because of testing - making sure a player can beat the level while small as well as with power ups and at the same time not trapping the player take time. It's another short one but I hope you like.. Lets star each other as much as possible - and if not - please leave a comment :)

Really addicted to the game so far. It's easy to just jump in and want to play other people's games. It also gives you great ideas on how to make your own.

There are some things I hope they address as the game goes on. Namely:
- I'd like my friends' levels to be selectable from a list.
- Context sensitive question blocks. Like someone said: If you're small Mario, a mushroom comes out. If you're big Mario, a flower/feather comes out. I think question blocks should be like this by default, and they can save "THIS BLOCK IS ALWAYS A FEATHER" for Exclamation Blocks instead.
- It would be neat to have level completion from a miniboss. I'd love to be able to beat a Bowser Jr. and then have the level end. It's a little weird to have levels end normally on an airship or what have you.
- More playable characters, but that's kind of a no brainer. It'd be great to be Luigi and Peach, each with their own abilities.
- Slopes. Definitely slopes.
- More terrain packs - tropical, ice worlds, desert, etc. I'm sure all this stuff will come in DLC.

Basically whatever they release for DLC for this game, I will be ALL over it. I can't really reiterate how addicting just playing random levels is. It's like a never ending, super unpredictable Mario game.

@DrFinkelstein

You can erase Nikki's row 19. That was a Wii U GamePad double post.

@Smerd

In addition to that, I've been trying to "heart" all of you guys, further creating a chain of "here are NW people." Its easier for me to go into my "followed users" list than type in 16-digit characters constantly. WHAT IS THIS, WII FRIEND CODES AGAIN!? GOD.

Guys, have you come across the Super Meat Bros. level? It's super challenging and EXACTLY what I was looking for out of this sharing feature. I'll get the level ID if needed.

Having read your post, when I saw it today, I took a whiff at it. Holy cow, man. It took me a while...but my stupid pride wouldn't allow me to stop without beating it. My record for levels stands at 100% completion vs. attempted still.

--Is my level really that hard? Only a handful of completes, and only Nikki and Ploot were able to clear it from NW, last I saw..

@VofEscaflowne

"WOW !!" coins? Pfffft, how original *rolling eyes*

Not to mention the fact that when you kneel on a white block in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, you don't drop down behind it into the background. Stephen was RIGHT about this game, ughhhhhhhh.

**-there is a LOT of sarcasm in this post, more than usual..

Hahahaha. That would be amazing.

Are there any boomerang or fire bros. in the game? Maybe I haven't unlocked them yet.

I can't wait to try all the new NW levels today!

In the meantime I will post my new stage:

The Lost Temple Treasure Room

EDIT - I deleted the original and created a REDUX version. It's easier but more fun.

@Mr_Mustache

Yeah almost :) ... I will be posting one level every so often but yeah, the idea here is for people who haven't followed someone yet to put in a level and then you don't have to do it anymore... Soon it will just be the title name as everyone here follows everyone else.

@DrFinkelstein

Yeah that's the one - no - no worries about not leaving comments if you starred it - I'm not upset at all -.. I don't think all my levels need to be starred - it would help just to have NW loyalty though for ourselves so we can upload more levels for eachother. My little rant was more to the general public - especially if I think the level is at least half decent, I would love some critique if it fails for a star..

Oh and my latest one will be filled out on your google form soon.

Edit: @nate - oh really? ah that explains it.... Ok well I guess I'll just try and make decent levels for the public and hope for the best. I'm starring pretty much all NW people though regardless - cause we need the stars..and the practice

I need to go back to my older stages and take out some of the tougher spots. I want more people to complete my stages!

If my wife can't beat one of my stages then odds are others aren't giving it the attention I was hoping for.

I think adding checkpoints will help with this type of thing. PLEASE, NINTENDO!

I just created, played, and uploaded my first stage/level (and added it to the the list), and I have to say it was a lot of fun! I usually don't like level editors/creators as they can feel so unbelievably overwhelming. But SMM is so intuitive and fun to use that it's more fun not playing!

I still have loads to unlock, so my first attempt isn't bursting with variety, but I actually like what I created and look forward to trying out the creations of others.

Thanks for putting together that Google Docs listing, DrFinkelstein.

I think perhaps my favorite aspect of the game is the homages to Mario Paint. Nostalgia overload. The dog riding the rocket was just so awesome to see. It's the little things this game really wows with. I can't wait to unlock more. So glad they didn't give us all the tools at the start.

@PogueSquadron I have found ways to "encourage" the player to stick around and dance with Bowser Jr. far a bit.

09/12/15, 23:12
I finally got everything last night, so I made this level today while my son was watching and... suggesting... things.

Ghastly Pipes

Wall kicks, deception, and fire. What could go wrong?

Be sure to follow me on there so you can see all of my stage updates! All of them are well thought-out stages that don't go too crazy.
