Super Mario Maker on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

So I made a mino autoscrolling level. It is not the longest level but it has a little variety. SMB3.

And a second level this morning with the airship theme.

All of my stuff is unlocking one day at a time. What the heck!!! I made another level anyways.

Might as well jump. Jump!

Hinph brings you Set Up Us the Bomb, a puzzle-ish course... probably not too many of these from me.

Yeah... I'm definitely creating more than playing. I'm sure I'll slow down at some point.

Oh there we go, I unlocked the castle theme! And now I can have a Mario trail in edit mode to show where he lands. Finally!

I just couldn't wait! Time traveled like crazy. No regrets.

I think I should have said that my second course was "for glory," because I see now that it's quite hard... but not super hard. Maybe the submission form needs more difficulty descriptors? For Challenge or something. I think one of the issues is that a course is naturally easy to the creators.

I'm quite saddened by the completion rates of my levels, so the goal of my next one is to just make casual, fun level with maybe a couple little harder spots.

I've found through the years of making games to back the difficulty down a notch or two from what you can do to counter the advantage you get by being the creator. It certainly applies in Mario Maker unless you're looking for a low completion rate or going for an extended challenge. Remember that people don't have the same patience as you for your level.

@Cubed777

Yeah, good advice. Funny thing is that I already dialed the difficulty back on the first couple stages I made, but it apparently wasn't enough. It's easy to get attached to something you like and not want to remove it or to think "well, taking that out would make it too easy!"

I think, also, people don't have patience for levels in general when there's so many other ones just a few clicks away. Thankfully, some people genuinely like a challenge when it's doable and you can actually learn from your mistakes.

Checkpoints would help a bunch. This game needs checkpoints... they should patch that in right away.

@Hinph
Yep. It's such a strange thing to be absent.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Haven't had a chance to do this but I'm hearing that SPAMing items/blocks.. using a ton (fill the screen etc) will work.

I'm in the same boat at the moment. I'm going by Mr. Ploot's advice here..

I will play yours and a few others later - my follow list is quickly growing - this is fun. And I quoted you cause your level title alone deserves respect.

My new level is practically done but I kinda want Warp Pipes. Is this something you unlock later? It kinda defeats the purpose of a secret to make it a bit more interesting.

STEPS TO BYPASS THE 9-DAY LOCK SYSTEM:

1. Get the message about the truck delivery. This happens after creating for FIVE MINUTES.
2. Be sure you've used each element at least once.
3. Place between 1000-1500 tiles, and you will receive your new unlock.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 until you have everything.

You can do this VERY QUICKLY.

Move quickly. If you can.

If you haven't yet, check out the in-game Manual.

You get to meet Mary O. and read some pretty silly things. Highly recommended!

Adding a new level to the database and online… Blooper's Chase.

I love having such an easy snapshot of the levels we're making and it doesn't have to be constantly added to the OP or something. It's great seeing everyone posting. We have 26 levels posted to date and it's been a day! Over 10 people have already contributed! I hope the filters are working for you guys.

@DrFinkelstein

I will use the database when I have access to a computer. It's cumbersome enough using my phone to post here!!
09/12/15, 19:20
Hmmm... is there any way to see your level ID after you upload it? I didn't think it was that hard but only 3/15 have completed it so it might be worth sharing

Edit: I found it.

12 people have played Cave Uno but only one star so far - If they aren't goin to star it, I want feedback! The wife played it - she noticed the beginning a bit tricky with some blocks a bit in the way of a jump but that's it..
