So I started this game (the GBA version, actually). I'm not sure what possesses me to keep playing these classic JRPGs with way too many random battles over the likes of newer stuff like Radiant Historia, but I do. Hopefully this quest won't last me too long because I enjoy these games up to a point but they sure can start to wear on you.

Anyone know what the penalty for dying is? I died one early on and I didn't notice any repercussions but there must be something.

I played Breath of Fire after playing Breath of Fire II. Huge mistake.

EDIT- Penalty of dying: maybe a loss of Gold? There is a Bank in that game, right?

I've been pushing to have an all-RPG poll for the next Retroactive on RFN, with this, the GBC Lufia and Mega Man Network 2 as the choices.

@Guillaume if thats the case, I will hold out on playing this in hopes it shows up there.

Nina and Bo have joined my party. Bo's ability to travel through forests is pretty cool and a nice upgrade that I wasn't expecting.

One thing, though, that has been a disappointment is the music. Good music goes a long way with old school RPGs (especially one with as many random battles as this one) and so far there seem to be very few songs and they are all just pretty basic. Not what you'd hope for from Capcom.

All in all this seems to be a pretty by the numbers JRPG so far. I'll stick with it because that's my style but I can't say I'd recommend this one to anyone at this point.

@Jargon

I remember feeling nauseous while playing that game. Has it hit you yet? Maybe I'll fire it up again soon.

Bought Breath of Fire IV when it was on sale a few weeks back. So this is sorta relevant.

Also Breath of Fire is one of the first traditional style RPGs (swords and sorcery style) that I ever owned, played and beat. I'm pretty fond of it.

This game has definitely grown on me since I started playing it. It's still pretty by the numbers, but there's been some interesting developments and my party has taken shape into a more engaging group.

I've played about 10 hours I'd guess. Not sure how far along that puts me.

Just beat it! My tune has definitely changed on this game. It started out very vanilla, but as you go on, more cool stuff starts happening, including some sweet dream world and time travel stuff. Nothing too mind blowing but enough to keep it interesting and set it apart from just any old JRPG.

The game is not too long either. As you can see I beat it in under two weeks. I'd guess maybe 20 hours, and it didn't overstay its welcome with any annoying end game sequences or the like.

My biggest complaint would be the frequency of random battles. There's an item you get, not too deep into the game (the Silver Bracelet), that cuts down the battle rate and definitely makes a noticeable difference, but it really only takes it from super irritating to quite annoying. But that's just the way these games were back then so I won't ding it too much for that and you can basically just press A and hope for the best.

I'm also glad that I made frequent use of a FAQ, because the game does not always do the best job directing you on where to go. And there's some stuff in the late game that I really don't know how you're supposed to know what to do. There's also a lot of secret optional stuff that would seem to be quite hard to find on your own.

Overall though, this was definitely worth playing, a very solid 16 big JRPG. Not up there with FFVI or Chrono Trigger, but firmly in the tier below I'd say. I'd put it above FFIV for sure. It gets a hearty recommendation if you like this type of game. And I'm excited that Breath of Fire II seems to be even more highly regarded. I'll be checking that one out at some point for sure.
