Zelda Wii U Delayed Until Possibly 2016

Well this is a hookshot to the balls...

The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U is officially delayed until possibly 2016. This news comes from a Development Update video (seen below) that Eiji Aonuma posted on Youtube. Mr. Aonuma of course is the director of this upcoming Nintendo title.

While he doesn't explicitly say the game will release in 2016 for sure, the team is no-longer using 2015 as a focus and thus they aren't trying to release it by year's end. Will they still pull it off? Maybe... but it's not probable from the sound of it.

Sure our initial reactions are that of sadness, disappointment, or anger,... but could this be a good thing? Maybe it's obviously one? More time, more ideas, more polish... should be wonderful right? Anyone worried about a Twilight Princess situation where the game eventually has a weak release on the original system in order to be even 'more spectacular' on the next-gen system? We have no reason to believe this would happen but it'd be kinda crazy if it did.

Not surprised. Not too disappointed, either. It's ready when it's ready.

Not in the slightest bit surprised... was straight up expecting this. Nintendo usually ends up delaying Zelda games, and this one is particularly ambitious. I want them to take as much time as they need. 2015 should still be a solid year.

"Delay" means nothing to me because release dates mean nothing to me until they are concrete.

A bit disappointing but hardly surprising.

@Zero

What is concrete but a heavy, rough building material made from a mixture of broken stone or gravel, sand, cement, and water, that can be spread or poured into molds and that forms a stonelike mass on hardening.

More surprised by it not being at E3 than the delay itself. There must be some pretty serious re-tooling going on, and if that's the case, I certainly want them to take as much time on it as they need to.

Expected.

That wasn't though.

Miyamoto once said "a delayed game is eventually good. A rushed game is forever bad."

I'm okay with this, as long as the final product is worth the wait.

If it won't be shown at E3 then it makes me wonder if they have other stuff to show. The Wii U schedule is barren and even if the game is a long time out, Nintendo have gotta show all they have.

I would not be surprised if this gets the Twilight Princess treatment and appears on both Wii U and its successor. Why use a big game like this on a system that can't be saved, when it could go to better use for a brand new system? Heck, I kind of hope that games like Splatoon, Xenoblade X, and Pikmin 3 also get released on the successor, in the hopes that they can release on a more popular platform and find more of an audience.

No E3 showing and no 2015 release. That's Gamer Christmas and regular Christmas cancelled in one go. Goddamnit.

Got to be a huge shift in the game's design to stop them from showing anything at E3. What does that say? NX or a gameplay & style change so big that it doesn't make sense to keep building hype for what we've seen? Very, very odd.

Hmm, now that is odd. At least it should feel like a brand new unveil when we see it again.

I honestly didn't like what I was seeing at the Game Awards... watching Link ride around in a massive, empty overworld just for the sake of it looked as horrible as I always insisted it would be, and almost all of my hype from the original E3 unveiling was deflated. Hell, even Miyamoto had an "are we there yet?" moment as Aonuma proudly declared that the destination was still minutes away, this is only a tiny part of the overall map, and isn't that grand? I hope there was a tea table upending, because I was starting to accept the fact that I was just going to have to find things to enjoy in this game despite the annoying overworld.

@Infinitywave

Hmmm. He was still saying that it would come to Wii U in this video, but l wonder if the game is going to find itself in an awkward place like Twilight Princess where it might be best to offer an NX version of it as well. I know many people would freak out if it didn't come to Wii U at all.

Ocarina of Time was delayed more than once IIRC. It paid off.

@Hinph

If it didn't come to Wii U at all I'd actually laugh and then cry. 3rd parties have stopped supporting it. Let's not think Nintendo will do the same!

Outside chance it's an early April Fools joke. Like, WAAAAAAY outside chance. Okay, it's not an April Fools joke. At all. Oh well.

As most have said, this doesn't come as that much of a surprise. It never seemed likely for this year, I'm not sure why they kept talking about it being released in 2015. While it was great seeing Link ride around a huge area on his horse, that footage also showed just how early the game was.

@WrathOfSamus777

From what I recall, they never actually gave the title a release date prior to the one that it eventually released on, so any "delay" was entirely unofficial. Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game that has gotten a release date (however vague or specific) and then not been released on that original release date.

I was disappointed when I first heard about the delay. (Technically, they could still make the 2015 release window since Aonuma didn't say they were pushing the game back to 2016, but that's unlikely.) When I heard that the delay was because of brand new ideas that they wanted to work into the idea (as opposed to, say, the team simply being unable to complete their original ideas in the amount of time they had originally intended), I felt much better about it. But when they said that it wasn't going to be shown at E3 this year, I went back to being disappointed...

@V_s

That's why after watching the video I quickly ensured I stated possibly. Finger's crossed! (but ah well, I wasn't making any plans around it yet.)

I'm honestly just really psyched for Splatoon, Xenoblade X, and Mario Maker this year. Hopefully some surprises are along the way.

Nooooooooooo. Fuck I'm legit surprised. Damnit. I thought they could pull it off!!

So what's their big title this year then? I guess E3 will answer that question. Fuck, I want this game like it's nobody's business.
