Just curious if anyone else picked up this set? It only being $10 for the first week is a crazy good deal. I still have the physical version, but couldn't pass this up.

On the subject of playing positions, my sensor bar is placed quite high. A seated playthrough doesn't feel right so Conzo here is standing like they did in the original Wii adds, occasionally diving behind my sofa for max effect! On the plus, I'm feeling very absorbed in the game. On the minus... my back is killing me!

Where's your sensor bar? Mine's on top of the TV. Like right ON it. I used those included sensor bar stickers that came with the Wii or Wii U. Also did you check your settings on the Wii or Wii U (I wonder if you have to do it separately in Wii mode for this to work) where you can choose where your sensor bar is positioned? I never had any problems from having to raise my arm or anything. It just sits perfectly fine on my lap. If yours doesn't consider maybe switching the sensor bar to below the TV.

I do something similar to the pillows but it's easier than that. I just use the arm of the couch to rest my arm on and it feels fine.

Think it said I'm 36% done with Prime 1. Game is still just as incredible as it was when it came out, all the little touches still stand out even today. I am finding, for the most part, that the parts where I got "stuck" last time trying to figure out what to do aren't happening. Except I went into the Frigate one step too soon which kind of sucked...but still one of the best games ever.

@Super_Conzo you realize how many horrifying jokes I can make about "sensor bars" and "playing positions" right?

@missypissy
That's what I'm finding. MP1 was my first Metroid game and I went into it a little naive but ended up getting stuck after every dead end. Now, with 12 more years of gaming under my belt, this game is flowing like a gem. I finally "get" the hype.

Sorry it took so long, Samus.

Edit: Hey Pokepal, maybe I should post a pic of my sensor bar; I'm worried it's smaller than everyone elses.

The word "is" can be used correctly when stating an opinion. By simply stating something you are implying it's what you think.

Star Wars is a good movie. Star Wars is a bad movie. Star wars is a movie directed by George Lucas.

Opinion. Opinion. Fact. Surely you can tell the difference.

I'm sure I could find a grammar nut to explain exactly why this is an incorrect statement, but surely you're able to understand the difference between 'I think Star Wars is a bad movie' and 'Star Wars is a bad movie'.

Your thoughts on the Prime controls may be in fact your opinion, but it's a badly expressed one when you use absolute statements.

Regardless of which, it's an opinion based on a fallacy, that's why it's invalid (not the 99% of people thing, although the two are related). If your cursor is jittery, it's because of *your* setup, not the nature of the controls themselves.

And that's my pet peeve in all of this- You're blaming the game for a situation that is specific to you. (Which incidently is why 99% of people don't have an issue.) It's the same mentality thats causing you to ask questions about Wii Motion+ effects now that you're finding the controls are better than they were. Trilogy doesn't use Wii Motion+. In fact, Motion + has nothing to do with the IR aspect of the controls at all.
More likely is that it has to do with either your distance from the TV, interference from other strong IR sources, or (like others have mentioned) the positioning of your sensor bar. Or some combination of the three. Something in your setup has changed.

You can have the opinion that you don't like the controls, sure. I have no issue with that. But it's not the controls themselves that are bad. It's your interaction with them.

EDIT: Oh boy, look what I found:

I know this is blasphemy to a lot of people but I try to avoid Wii games that use the IR or motion, it's my Gold Goldeneye classic controller all the way for me! (or the Wiimote turned on it's side, that's a good one)

Stylus is a whole nother matter, many of my favorite DS games (Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword or Phantom Hourglass for example) are controlled primarily via the stylus. I find it to be very precise and consistent whereas the Wii IR was always jumpy and jittery and awkward for me.

This pretty much confirms it. Jittery IR across the board? Definitely your setup. The game is not the problem here.

Every f'ing time I play this game, I forget how to get to the Gravity Suit. Stupid stalagtite thingies.

@PogueSquadron

Are you having trouble knocking them down? Check my post on the first page, mucking with the controls will actually help you there. (The one part in the game where pointer controls are a hinderance )
02/02/15, 01:25
It always got me on Gamecube too. The things are just up really high and you wouldn't know to look for them. I think they probably needed a room or two before that one where they had you playing with that mechanic over and over again.

And yeah you definitely wouldn't really see them all that well unless you knew to look for them. The annoying thing is that if you think you can't proceed there, you naturally make your way back to the frigate, which is super annoying to navigate without the Gravity Suit.

I have this currently downloading right now. I have it on Wii, but I could not pass up a $10 download version of the game. It is quite the long download, though. Hopefully I can get a chance to play it tonight before going to bed.

I must say though, I did just pass one of my favorite parts of the game. I love getting tothe Section in the ruins where you obtain the ice beam. And there's the one area that has the pool that drains, giving you access to a couple different areas of the overworld. I believe one goes to the big tree area while another goes to the Frigate. Just a really cool section that unites the world in a cool way. That's always when Metroid shines to me, and what puts it above its Castelvania brethren.
02/02/15, 02:54
Damn was this a long installation process (even after the long download)....
02/02/15, 03:46
Just got the Power Bomb. For some reason I thought I would've needed the Wavebuster for the drone guy but I guess I didnt. Hate that guy! The mines are kind of annoying. The Wiimote doesn't exactly do any favors for my hand here. Pretty rough when switching weapons. Look out Carpal Tunnel here I come.

@Shadowlink

I am betting that in a GoldenEye fight with us using IR controls and him using the classic gold controller - we would win. That's just a feeling though..

@Smerd

I know that for a fact . I can't remember who it was (Kotaku or IGN guys I think), they took on the Activision devs in a playtest review of the multiplayer. Activision used CC, journos used the motion controls. Journos schooled the developers at their own game. And the developers were actually shocked when it happened, not realising the motion controls were so good.

No-one has ever taken me up on the challenge here though. Ah well.

I'm excited to play Prime 2 again. I think I played it two or three times years ago. I know it has its detractors but I thought it was pretty amazing. Never really found the Dark World stuff annoying, aside from the loading screens. Music was amazing. Atmosphere might've been better than the first game at times. Just an awesome experience.

Edit: currently just got power bomb in prime.

There's certainly nothing wrong with the controls in the GameCube originals, and I feel they actually did a good job designing the game around the limitations of the controls so that they weren't a problem. But even good things can still be improved upon.

I like Prime 2 but I feel the world design isn't as tight as in Prime 1. It seems like it has less connections between areas and the locations aren't as easy to cross through in repeat visits, so the world just doesn't "flow" as well as it did in Prime 1. Prime 3 was a little better at this, though the planet thing kind of messed that up as well. All three games are great but I still feel Prime 1 is best for having the best world.
02/03/15, 00:05
I definitely agree. I just think all three games complement each other pretty well. They all seem to shine in different ways.

One of the biggest offense about 2 I think is the story. In the grand scheme of things, the things that happen in Echoes just aren't very consequential.
02/03/15, 01:50
Just got the Plasma Beam/X-Ray Visor in Prime 1 so I'm making great progress. The swapping of beams (if you have default layout) is cumbersome and about my only real complaint I can have with this control scheme. Trying to get a good 100% run going here but I think I missed a couple scans for enemies that will come back and bite me in the ass.
