You can bring up a keyboard to chat while in the lobby area but while actually fighting, you can only use preset messages. At least you can edit several preset messages to your liking though!

Hmm, well that's at least something. Maybe we can just NW Chat or Skype or whatever.

Grant, you're not doing the Weapon Tutorials, right? In which the goal for every quest is to kill a Great Jaggi? If so, those are optional.

Anyway, there should be low-level quests online, as well. If the Quest is way beyond your level, then you won't be allowed to take it. Lets all jump online together, then! And harvest mushrooms! Exciting! (We can communicate however you want. NW Chat or whatever.)

I don't think I've even killed a "Great Jaggi" yet. Maybe I'm even earlier in the game than I thought!

In any case, yeah. I'm keen on playing together online. Maybe I'll finally 'get' what makes this game so popular then.

I personally think this game is mind-numbingly boring in single player

Yyyyyeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh.....

I'm online now if anyone wants to play. Well not actually in a room but lemme know!

@VofEscaflowne

Oooh, tempting! I'm in a tough spot when it comes to getting online to play games. I'm usually not available at least until after 8:30pm, after all the kids are in bed. How late do you usually stay up?
03/11/15, 00:19
@GameDadGrant

8:30 ET? I'm playing some in about 40 minutes with Marsh (does he still post here? I'll pester him on Twitter) but I can play some later too if you're on.

@VofEscaflowne

Yeah, EST! East Coast represent!

Though, I may be tied up *this* particular night. I'll post here if/when I can hop online.

ive never played a monster hunter game, but im thinking its best to wait until I get a New Nintendo 3DS XL
03/11/15, 02:20
So, like... NOW?

I'll jump on. After I finish this stupid Powderstone quest.

EDIT: I didn't see you online, VoF ("Fabien", right?).

Okay, let's have a playdate this week, then.

@Pg3
Well, it DOES perform a lot better on the New 3DS. But you might miss the zeitgeist!

@VofEscaflowne Hiiiii

@pokepal148 Me too, omg. It's such an interestingly creepy design, both in aesthetics and battle tactics. I love this game!

Do you guys have Twitter? We can organize meet ups/chat faster that way. I'm @jpwendell on there.

Gah I feel like I'm missing out, but I'm trying to be realistic about how much time I have to play games, and a game like this seems like it needs a pretty big commitment, not sure I'd ever be able to catch up to the point where playing online would even be viable. Double gah!
03/11/15, 03:52
@deathly_hallows Is this your first Monster Hunter? The way online works is independent from single player for the most part. You can play mostly online and not really miss much from offline, aside from the added benefits of being introduced to the beasts properly and having more resources. As well as food bonuses too I guess. It only takes a few quests to lvl up online, if you have an experienced party with you.

It's a symbiotic relationship, playing more offline enhances online and online helps with the single player. It's all up to the player.

I'm online pretty much every night for a couple hours, if anyone wants to join.

Not to mention that one doesn't really level up either. It's entirely gear dependent so a person can always choose a different play style if playing with newcomers.

@Marsh@VofEscaflowne
Okay, I'm in, I'll have some time to play this weekend so I'll download it and try to figure it out. Yes this will be my first MH game, I've messed around with them on the PSP and I played the Wii MH3 demo, but I've never spent more than 2 or 3 hours playing and therefor really never learned how to play (mostly just how to run up to monsters and get stomped ).

I was just looking for a strategy guide that I could buy but there doesn't seem to be one... any good suggestions on where to learn how to play? Best FAQ or whatever?

@deathly_hallows

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. From what I've found, the best way to learn to play is....just to play the game, lol. Even suggestions from an FAQ or from a seasoned veteran pales in comparison to actual experience. The full game thankfully does a pretty good job of explaining things as they come up (if you have the tutorial messages turned on) so it's a fairly easy ramp up.

Might be good for a couple of noobs like us to play together online. That way we can kind of learn together, yeah?
03/11/15, 14:10
@GameDadGrant
Yeah sure! I'll PM you when I get the game.
03/11/15, 14:34
Yeah I was pretty much new to the series with this game aside from putting a few hours in Monster Hunter 3. Never checked a single guide or FAQ so I just went along with the flow of things. Might feel a bit overwhelming but it's not too hard to get the hang of things.

@deathly_hallows

Sweet!

@VofEscaflowne

Do you know if there is a particular load-out that works better than most? I'm pretty happy with the sword & shield, but I'm tempting by the Great Sword, or maybe one of the more ranged weapons. What do you use?
03/11/15, 17:22
@GameDadGrant

I use the long sword. I would imagine ranged weapons are better if you play online as you'll have tanks. Other than that, I really have no clue. I started with the long sword and stuck with it throughout the game so far. I like its long range which seems useful to mount enemies and it also has a huge overhead swing. I know a lot of people like the insect glaive but I didn't want to pick something that everyone else would be using

Sword and shield is great for beginners, it's what I started using when I first learned how to play. You have to spend some time learnin how each weapon type works. Most have you push X to unsheath and from there, it's combinations of the R, X, and A buttons to attack. Y will sheath the weapon. Sword and shield is good because you maintain speed with your movements but the weapon itself isn't as powerful as others.

I would avoid bow and bowgun starting out, as they can be tricky to aim and require crafting/buying tons of ammo.
