Oops, for some reason, I thought you used a Switch Axe. Yeah, it would be useless for Long Sword.

Oh! The Switch Axe. Speaking of that thing, I just did the tutorial for it. That's actually a pretty cool weapon! I might look into that one, once I move up from my "noob" Sword 'n Shield set.

I like the variety of weapons you can choose from, but man. I tried out the Bow, but...CHEESE AND RICE! That was terrible! No sir, don't like it one bit. Does anyone here use the bow?

I know Stratos does and mains the bow. Personally I can not get a handle on it. I know you can change the options for the aiming for the bow and bowgun. That can help a bit.

@GameDadGrant
Haven't tried it. But the Bowgun is lots of fun.

The Switch Axe is pretty difficult, by the way. But it's very versatile and powerful.

Have you guys customized your pre-programmed chatter yet? I still wish that you could use a keyboard mid-hunt (why not?), but it's pretty neat. It'll automatically use some phrases when certain things happen. For the rest, you can insert your most-needed missives.

Constraints breed creativity! I'm going to change Nice Job to Bien Joue!

(Have you guys noticed the inordinate amount of French hunters?)

I really haven't noticed that many French hunters but than again I haven't hunted with many randoms. I tinkered with a little but I think I am going to change things to be based on a theme like a movie,TV show or game.

@Anand

Are they actually French? Or are they French-Canadian?
03/25/15, 01:49
I main the bow and hunting horn.

For the bow you have to change it's control to "type 1" to get any type of grip on it. The default type, honestly there should be no one who can get a handle on a bow using that option. Once you get it to type 1 tho it handles exactly like 3U and is fantastic.
03/26/15, 15:12
@Anand Yeah, I had set up my shouts as quotes from Final Fantasy games, mostly FF VI. Maybe not entirely helpful, but funny nonetheless. I'm not sure how many people have recognised them as such though...

I don't play with randoms so I can't comment on this game's player base.

I'm bout to start up MH4U on my New 3DS XL. Hype!

Any insect glaive users? I toyed around with it a bit in the demo, and I kind of liked it. But I'm wondering if it's legit for some serious hunting. Anyone recommend it as a main weapon?
03/27/15, 19:14
I haven't used it much outside of the demo but it can be a pretty strong weapon if you can get all three buffs on your character. Attack, Defense and Speed. It is also one of the few weapons that can mount monsters on a regular basis. All of them can but it is easier with the Insect Glave. The only thing which can be difficult is the upgrading process of the weapon since it has a funky upgrade system.
03/27/15, 19:40
The glaive can also be helpful in multiplayer if you pull off successful mounts, giving all players more chances to wail on the beast. As far as raw damage output goes though, I think it's on the lower end of the spectrum. But I encourage everyone to use whatever weapons they have fun using.

Hmm, maybe I need to change the control set up, then. Or...I dunno, stick with my sword 'n shield. It's just easier.

I really liked that sword/axe thing, though. It was pretty cool pulling off combos against the Great Jaggi.

@GameDadGrant The sword and shield is by far the best support weapon in the game bc you can use items while blocking which combined with the ability 'wide range' can put you in a healer position.

You can main it but you basically need to get one weapon for each element and know what monster is weak to what. This is because the best way to compensate for the sword and shield's low power is with with bonus effects like fire and lighting.

From what I read the SnS got a buff in Portable 3rd so it is better than what it was in Tri and even better in 4U because of a few changes to the moveset. You can solo monsters with the SnS if you have great skills to go along with it like Elemental attack up, Status attack +1 or 2, Trapmaster and bombidier. Those are good damage skills but evasion +1 2 or 3 is great for evading and keeping your combo going.

Anyway I made it to my urgent to fight the Black Gravios I tried to gun it since it can be hard to fight since it is tough and tall but I got 1 shot with my current gunner armor with its fire beams. So I am doing some high rank expedition to get some ores to make Artian S gunner armor since it has bonus shot which makes me able to fire one more shot with rapid fire shots.

Alright, cool. Thanks for the tips guys. Elemental buffs and status ups sound like they will be necessary if I stick with the ol' sword and shield. I'll look into those, since I'm likely to remain with this weapon set for the foreseeable future. Especially since, as mentioned above, I can use items while blocking. Which is a big benefit for a noob like me.

I like how after mostly steamrolling it in singleplayer the Shagaru Magala decided to spend the last few days trolling my attempts on the HR 6 urgent.

@NinTemple_Maxi if it makes you feel any better that thing is a nightmare for blademasters.

So, I finished up the (probably unnecessary) weapons training. And you know what? While I don't think the bow & arrow weapons are all that great, the Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun are actually kind of awesome. Easy to aim with, they do a ton of damage, and you can add elemental buffs to the ammo.

I'll probably still stick with the sword & shield for now, but I'm not going to totally dismiss the bowguns either. They were actually pretty useful and relatively easy to use. I kinda like 'em.
