Lufia: The Legend Returns Discussion (Nintendo Game Boy Color) [game]

Lufia: The Legend Returns on the Game Boy COLOR

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Lufia: The Legend Returns on the GBC!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
It's happening...! The Game Boy Color Lufia title is coming this month (in Europe... apparently not confirmed for North America yet) and a new trailer for its eShop release has been released.

While not the most familiar title in the series, I'm definitely looking forward to this one as I've never actually played it. And if it helps bring more attention to the series and hopefully a release for Lufia II on the Wii U VC, then I'm buying this day one! Anyone else planning to give this a shot?

Did they release Fortress of Doom already, and if so, why the hell haven't I bought it?

@Guillaume

Exactly!

(What the heck am I wearing!?)

The only sad thing is that I don't think the first SNES game will ever see a release.

EDIT: Yeah the release schedule is kind of weird. Considering this is the third game to come out, it's odd that it's the first one being released for the VC. But whatever, I just want Lufia II!

I really want to like this, but I hear mixed things about its approach. It sounds more like Lufia 1 than 2, and while I loved Lufia 1's storyline, its gameplay felt very archaic and a bit like a slog. Hmmm...not sure what to do...

I would be very, very happy with Lufia 2, partly because it's awesome, partly because my SNES save keeps killing itself, and partly because I think the Ancient Cave runs would work extremely well with the suspend play feature.

EDIT 2: Oh man, that music. That's really nostalgic. And the gameplay kinda looks better than I expected. Hmm...

@VofEscaflowne
What are the complications with the first game? Does it have something to do with the Taito label?

@TriforceBun

Yeah that music really brought back memories. Gameplay looks simple but sometimes that's just what I want. The only thing that kind of bothered me is that I saw that your team can fill out that entire bottom half of the screen... so you get 9 characters? That seems a bit overkill. Hopefully it doesn't hold back the speed of battles or anything.

@r_hjort

I don't remember the details exactly but it had something to do with the publishers and the rights being all over the place. I'd have to look it up again but Natsume basically said it wouldn't release on VC. Lufia II on the other hand they said is definitely possible.

EDIT: And now they said on Twitter that they didn't publish the first one and that we'd have to ask Square Enix to release it... hmm, now I don't know anymore. I guess they meant that if it ever releases, it won't be due to their part. I don't place much hope in Square Enix ever bothering with it.

Oh and also a bit worrying is that apparently the release date is no longer confirmed to be in November for North America. It is however releasing in Europe this month. Don't hold this back Nintendo!

@VofEscaflowne
So I guess Natsume still has the publishing rights for the games they published back in the day, somehow, but that the first game is all Taito/Square-Enix still? This is very confusing, and to top it off I believe Nintendo might have published one or both of the SNES games here in Europe, so I guess that could complicate things further. I suppose I'll keep saving up for cartridges.

The Natsume Twitter account is amazing.

Also watched that trailer for the first time, that music had me getting a bit emotional and not too sure why.

Oh and according to the Twitter account for Natsume, a sequel is up to Square Enix and not them. So basically we ain't getting one.

@Pokefreak911

Well it could happen... but most likely won't. Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (DS remake) was Square Enix. Though with how that was received, I doubt they have any interest in going back.

@VofEscaflowne

Why does Squenix have control of this series again?? They've got enough RPGs under their belt, poor Lufia should be able to escape from that "umbrella." Between Lufia 2 and Harvest Moon, Natsume really knew how to make some great SNES experiences.

How was the DS remake, by the way?
01/12/15, 15:19
@TriforceBun

I'm honestly not sure why Square Enix got this. But from what I understand, Natsume published Lufia II and the GBC one (not sure about the GBA one but I would imagine that's Natsume as well). The first game was Taito so it's up to them (part of Square Enix I believe?) to release it on VC. Neverland developed the games who are now out of business.

The DS remake definitely didn't live up to the original. I think it sort of poked fun at itself at times, even during some of the game's best scenes... which made me cringe. I still enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing or anything. Gone were the turn based battles and the puzzles weren't anything great. Also the game suffered from a ton of slowdown all over the place too. It did have some nice tunes though!

Isn't the GBC game the worst one? I LOVED Lufia 1 & 2 but I couldn't finish the GBA game, it was so boring. Not sure I want to try one that is supposedly even worse.

@Zero

Yeah I don't think it's supposed to be excellent... but for the price and being a game in a series I love (well that being the first 2 games which I played), I'm willing to give it a shot. Plus giving the series any kind of acknowledgement on the Virtual Console and hopefully paving the way for Lufia II being re-released is worth it!

@VofEscaflowne

Nice music! Partly live instruments too. It's too bad this game wasn't more traditional, it could've been a nice way to keep the legacy alive. Did it even have an Ancient Cave?
01/12/15, 16:39
@TriforceBun

It did but it definitely wasn't as exciting as the SNES game. I actually beat this one though!
01/12/15, 16:51
Is this game related to the SNES games in some way or is it more self-contained? Would it be better to play the SNES ones first?
01/14/15, 01:09
@Mop it up It might be better to play the SNES ones only. Definitely first though so nothing scares you away from the franchise.
01/14/15, 01:16
@Mop it up

I'm honestly not sure but there wouldn't be much connection to really confuse a player.
