General amiibo Discussion Thread

amiibo is certainly turning out to be a big thing in Nintendo's eyes. Whether or not the rewards for utilizing each amiibo is worthy to you, Nintendo plans to implement all sorts of bonuses. It appears right now that every amiibo is meant to do 'something' in each game though games not featuring certain characters may have more limited uses or lesser-valued ones. We've had plenty of threads on here for amiibo and I'm sure that will continue. Still, I wanted to establish a general discussion thread that doesn't have a specific focus or thought. We'll also use this thread for informing the forums about upcoming news regarding new waves of amiibo or new compatibility. Enjoy! Tell us which amiibo you're planning to get! To get the party started, here are the various waves of amiibo on their way, compatibility information from Nintendo's website, and various links to other threads regarding amiibo.

@ploot

Apparently they did state it early on that there would be "staple" amiibo figures while others would be a limited release. Though which ones those end up being, who knows.

@VofEscaflowne

God forbid they clarify this earlier.

@DrFinkelstein

Yeah I just heard about it yesterday after the news about discontinued figures. It's kind of weird though... I would imagine it's due to make room for new ones but if this catches on, what stops retailers from stocking them? Skylanders has huge shelf space. Why can't amiibo?

@VofEscaflowne
That's fine and all, but they literally JUST came out.

Phasing figures out eventually is okay, but this is just ridiculous.

@ploot

Part of the "point" of these things is their scarcity. Disney Infinity does this DELIBERATELY by making chase figures that are alternate paintings of the normal ones. Quite frankly I'm stunned that there aren't amiibo chase figures, as hunting down the rare ones in stores is kind of part of the whole package.

@DrFinkelstein

Again, the lack of clarification is part of the deal with the Infinity and Skylanders figures.

I suppose this is new to people who aren't into figure collecting generally, but there is literally nothing new happening here, and Nintendo copping to which ones are going to be rare up front will actually HURT, since collectors / resellers will go after those in droves more quickly than we're currently seeing.

Man, I saw a boatload of Marths a week ago. Sorry guys.

EDIT- Goes to eBay: "Oh, you gotta be freakin' kidding me."

I/we KNEW this was going to happen. How were we not ready?!

Amazon.co.uk seems to have Marths in stock at about 23 pounds British, in case anyone is feeling desperate.

This basically just shifts my care of collecting all the amiibo to just buying the one or two I want when each phase ships to make sure I have them.

From a business perspective it makes logical sense to make those 3 rare since not many would normally want to rush out and buy those, and yet here people are now scrambling to pay an insane amount for them. This whole concept really just turns me off from the whole amiibo thing though.

In the back of my mind I agreed with that one sentiment. If we knew which would be the rare ones then yeah, scalpers would attack initially. We're in the dark but so are they. I'll just have to do my due diligence to get the more obscure characters from the start.

I don't know why we don't have a release date for this month on Round 2. I really want to get them for myself but I'm eager to buy my nephew Little Mac for Christmas since it would be his first amiibo and he's a big fan of Little Mac now that he's been playing Smash. I just want to know it'll make it in time for Christmas.

Rumor is that they'll release December 14th but Amazon doesn't even allow for pre-purchasing some of these. Just seems weird.

@DrFinkelstein

As far as I can tell the only ones that you can't order at amazon are the ones that sold out, or the wave 3 retailer specific ones (Shulk, Meta Knight, Rosalina, Lucario).

I lucked out with Marth, but I'm not dropping more than RRP on any of them (max $14).

I'm looking at Amazon now.

Marth - $79.99
Villager - $59.99
Wii Fit Trainer - $24.99

Of the second round ones...

Diddy Kong - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Zelda - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Luigi - Pre-orderable
Captain Falcon - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Pit - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Little Mac - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)

Of the third round ones...

Bowser - Not Listed (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Toon Link - Pre-orderable
Sheik - Not Listed (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Sonic - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)
Mega Man - Pre-orderable
King Dedede - Not pre-orderable (pre-orderable on Gamestop)

Rosalina - Not Listed
Shulk - Not Listed (only to be sold at Gamestop; even their site states this)
Lucario - Not Listed (only to be sold at Toysrus)
Meta Knight - Not Listed (only to be sold at Best Buy)

Mr_Mustache's tip is correct for those looking to pre-order any you can't on Amazon. I'll probably try to step in to one and see what's going on.

So it seems no amiibo have been discontinued

We'll see if any stores start restocking.

@VofEscaflowne

Indeed, stock speaks louder than words.
Posted: 12/08/14, 04:57:49
Why would Villager be discontinued? Animal Crossing is far too popular for that to even make sense.
Posted: 12/08/14, 05:38:48
@Marsh

Agreed. It is a confusing thought.
Posted: 12/08/14, 05:45:33
@VofEscaflowne

Good to know. I figured it was too early to discontinue anything yet.

@DrFinkelstein

Went to Gamestop and all their Marths were reserved. Sorry buddy.
Posted: 12/08/14, 07:35:09
@Jargon

I took care of him (and Ploot). I found several at Toys R Us over the weekend. Now if I can just find Wii Fit Trainer and Villager...
