Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U!

I was going back and forth on whether to get this on disc or digitally. And then I looked up the size of the games. I pulled this from NintendoEverything.com.

"Bayonetta 2 requires 14.6GB if you plan on picking up the digital version. And together, Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 take up 32.2GB of space."

I have yet to get a hard drive for my Wii U and I want both games so I had to go with the physical version.

What is everyone else going with? There's quite an interesting setup for the digital versions. I can't seem to find confirmation right now, but from what I've heard the digital version of Bayonetta 2 is $50. And you can then get the first Bayonetta for $10. Conversely you can buy B1 for $30 and then get B2 for $30. If this is true then the digital version of Bayonetta 2 is a better price than at retail.

*Edit: I think I found the digital price confirmation (for Europe at least). Found here.

I'm playing through the game now, and I'm also finding anything to do with the story terrible quite frankly. The rest of the game is great. I'm also finding the game a little easy on normal, but that makes me all the more eager to finish it and play it on hard.

I think I'm coming to the game in a fairly unique way - I haven't played the original Bayonetta, but finished Wonderful 101 (which I loved). Comparing Bayonetta 2 to W101, and I can honestly at this point in time, W101 seems the better game. But it's a comparison between 2 very good games. As silly as W101's story was, I enjoyed it far more than Bayonetta's incomprehensible trash.

Late to the party again! Started Bayo2 today. It's better than the first in basically every way so far. A handful of the things I didn't care for in the original have been improved (QTEs, visually incomprehensible bosses and situations, muted colors) and it overall just feels a lot cleaner.

Is it just me, or is the bow useless? I also can't do some of the combos in the Training (loading) screen, something about holding L2 (the target button) and hitting forward and punch, but it just does a regular attack...

Sorry for not being more specific, I don't know exactly, without the controller in my hands, but: for that L2 + forward + punch, I think it's a timing issue. You should be able to pull it off in practice mode.

Also I don't remember the bow, so it's not just you.

@Guillaume

The Bow, is there something.."green" about it? I didn't use it. I used swords and a chainsaw and a huge whip thing.

As for the Training deals, you'll get it eventually. I had trouble with a lot of them, but they eventually fell to my trying!

@Mr_Mustache Yeah, the bow shoots green insects or something. It's a cool effect but it doesn't seem to do very much damage.

I played thru the first chapter in anticipation of the Bayonetta smash DLC and it was pretty damn great. I am looking forward to playing more.

...

*helplessly goes back to playing smash*

@nate38

Yeah, I'd stick to melee. What short range stuff are you using? Hands and Feet? I was Swords Hands / Guns Feet for a long time.
02/16/16, 04:31
@Mr_Mustache Right now I've got swordhands/gunfeet on A and I just got the scythe, so that's on my B hands with flamethrower feet.
02/16/16, 04:47
@nate38

Hmm..don't think I used either of those. Did I use Flame Thrower? Does it have a name?
02/16/16, 05:17
@Mr_Mustache Undine. You can actually switch it from fire elemental to ice elemental by spinning the control stick and attacking. Neat effect, but I'm not sure if it actually does anything...

@nate38

Oh, duh, yeah. I used Undine A TON. There are some in-game achievements attached to using the Ice on certain enemies, if those trip your trigger. I never got it, but I sure did try!

So I started this one, and two chapters in (plus the prologue), I think I like it better than the original. The combat, which was already excellent, is basically the same (with the added Umbran Climax, making things even more chaotic/fun), but the game's pacing is better. So...yeah. I like it.

@ludist210

And it just keeps getting better. Some very insane battles in there! Plus the QTEs, while still in the game, won't punish you like they did in the first game. You barely had time to react to them there and it would be instant death. Very annoying if you had a good run for a medal.
03/28/16, 22:39
@VofEscaflowne

Yeah, the few QTEs I've seen to this point are fair. Some of them were brutal in the first game. Never overly-frustrating, just a little unfair.

I'm looking forward to continuing this one!

I'm finally playing this.

Seems pretty good so far. Though I do feel like I often feel like in these type of games... tons of combos, have no idea when to use one combo instead of another, end up mashing buttons.

Shirley rolled her eyes about 5 times at all of the innuendo so far.

@Zero

Have you played Devil May Cry 3 or 4? One of the biggest complaints I hear from action fans is that Bayonetta has too many combos, so nobody really bothers to remember what works best for a given situation. I think DMC 3 and 4 are fantastic about creating that balance between knowing what will be useful in a given situation while still offering enough freedom for players to express themselves and explore options.

I've been on a real character action game kick lately. Got the DMC collection for less than 5 dollars, played DMC 3 on Normal, as Virgil, and on Hard. Then I retried Viewfiful Joe, replayed the first DMC, and dove into DMC4. And my god, the combat system in DMC4 is blowing me away. I've been very tempted to seek out the Bayonetta dual pack on Wii U. If not Bayo, then God Hand.

I definitely played some of 3, but I keep forgetting if I played the whole thing or not.

This is an issue with every Platinum game I've played (Metal Gear Rising, Bayo 1 and 2, and especially Wonderful 101). The games give you a million options but don't teach you the intricacies of combat at all, so people end up mashing.

Are you playing DMC4 original or the Special Edition with the extra playable characters? I'm tempted to double-dip on that version, because Vergil in particular looks super fun...

Most of Wonderful 101 was me thinking I was playing well, then getting hit and having no idea why.

I kind of have to agree with Guillaume though, the story bits are... eh. If they were shorter I wouldn't mind but this game stops the action to do story a LOT and some of the bits just drag on and on. I guess I COULD skip them, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything.

Also, last night my cousin seemed very perturbed that her butt on the box looked bigger than her butt in the game. Looked about the same to me but I can't say that I gave it even a fraction of the attention that he did so... I dunno.

Otherwise though the game itself is growing on me a bit. I don't know that it is my favorite in the "action" genre but it's pretty solid.
