Fantasy Life on the 3DS

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Fantasy Life on the 3DS!

Fantasy Life is an RPG with a mix of elements. You first create your own character from a variety of character options, and then you can choose one of twelve "lives" to start off with (think classes or jobs in other RPGs). But don't worry, you have the option to switch between all twelve and can master each one. Different lives excel at different tasks such as crafting, cooking, gathering, fighting, and more. Some people (like Nintendo) compare this game to Animal Crossing but it's really more akin to Rune Factory, as it's more about taking on quests, crafting, gathering, and other such activities than it is about interactions with townsfolk. There are also multiple towns to visit, and the villagers are a lot less in-depth than AC, plus the game does not run in real-time. You can still get a house to fill with furniture though, so AC fans may still like this game.

How Online (and local) Multiplayer Works

-DLC Warning: If you buy the DLC, you will not be able to play multiplayer with anyone who does not have the DLC, and vice versa.

-Multiplayer supports up to three players in one world. The NA, EU, and AU versions of the game are all compatible with each other, but cannot play with the JPN version.

-All players must be on each other's 3DS friend list in order to visit a world. If you try to join someone's world which has two players in it and it won't let you in, it's probably because you are not 3DS friends with the other visitor.

-You cannot advance the story in multiplayer. It would be ideal to first unlock some areas before hosting.

-You do not need to stick together in multiplayer, you are free to travel independently to any part of the world.

-You can fast-travel to the location of another player or the Castele Guild Office, but you cannot fast-travel to any homes. You can still use the airship service to travel from town to town, as well as escorts.

-Items that drop from defeated monsters, felled trees, mined rocks, treasure chests, and fishing spots are not shared, and appear specific to each player. So when you pick up a drop, it will still be visible and available to the other player(s).

-Items that appear on the ground such as flowers, weeds, bugs, etc. are shared. If you pick up a flower, it will disappear for the other player(s) too and won;t be there for them to grab also.

-Bounties are also shared. When turning in a bounty, you will receive as many items are there are players, giving you the option of using the exchange box to share the reward with the other player(s). Only 3 bounties can appear in the world at one time; if a 4th one appears, the oldest one will disappear.

-The Guild Office in Castele has an exchange box which can be used to give/trade items and equipment with the other player(s). There are no limits to what can be given. DO NOT leave any items in the box when you disconnect from multiplayer, or they will disappear for good!

-The game cannot be saved in multiplayer, except when using the exchange box. It may be a good idea to take save breaks if playing for long stretches.

-When a player is going through the loading screen from one area to another, some weird quirks might happen. If you try to pick up a shared item or perform an activity like cutting a tree, you may find that your character freezes in place for a moment, followed by a message that reads "Synchronizing..." before you can move again. If this quirk happens when no player(s) are on a loading screen, and you're unable to perform these actions, then it's lag. Usually, having every player leave the area and come back will fix it.

-You cannot switch your Life in multiplayer, so be sure to choose the one you want before connecting.

-You can still complete active Life challenges and sidequests when playing, but you cannot accept or turn them in until you return to single player.

-You are free to craft/cook/alchemize all you want.

-You cannot use pets or CPU allies in multiplayer.

-You cannot rent a horse in multiplayer. Only the host can use a horse, and only one they own.

-Press Start or Select to snap a photo, saved to the SD card. Photos cannot be viewed in-game.

Sounds a lot like WoW to me! Is there a priest class of some kind?
06/19/15, 02:23
@Jargon I guess, but I thought WoW was an MMO. This isn't and you can't even meet with random players. I also thought WoW was mostly action, not crafting or NPC interaction or any of that, and also thought it had complex gameplay and was intended for "hardcore" players. This game's more simple, relaxed, intended for more "casual" playstyles. I have trouble imagining a seasoned WoW player would like this game. But maybe I'm mistaken on exactly what WoW is.

There is no priest-like class. Best you can have is Wizard which has healing magic, however the group heal is terrible and players are better off using their own healing items.

Well, yea I realize it's not an MMO. And that would definitely make her less interested. But we enjoyed WoW when it was just me and her playing on my friend's server back in the day so she might still have fun.

Crafting is a huge part of WoW. NPCs give you quests in WoW. There's not really a distinction between a main quest and side quests in WoW, but many of the quests are of the more mundane variety: Bring this to another NPC, collect 10 of these, kill 10 of those.

WoW certainly gets more complex with its gameplay when you're doing raids and stuff, but the base gameplay is very simple and casual friendly. you don't get 100 million people to have played your game otherwise. Mostly it's just clicking on an enemy to attack and activating rechargable skills at opportune times.

I am wary though that she's just think of this a WoW Lite and single player (since we don't know anyone for her to play with), so it's definitely not a slam dunk.

Ah, okay. Sounds like I should do some more research on WoW then. I thought it was just action and looting, with no real story and never-ending "quests" to get people to keep their subscriptions, with the looting being how you find equipment. I didn't know you could craft stuff, I'll have to look into how that all works. I guess I just assumed it was "hardcore" given the stories of how much some people obsess over it.

There's definitely a lot of lore in there if you care to read it. Honestly, there's a lot to recommend about WoW, I had about as much fun with it as I've had in any video game in the last 10 years. Stopped around level 70 I believe. The beginning is particularly cool because it kind of feels like Zelda in that you can accidentally wander into an area that will get you killed immediately, but you're also rewarded just for exploring so it encourages you to push the boundaries.

If you're interested I think you can play up to Level 20 for free these days which is definitely enough to see what the game offers. And most any PC can run it at this point.

I guess I'll just talk to my wife about Fantasy Life and see if she's interested. It would be nice to surprise her with a gift, but I don't want it to be wasted on her.

@Jargon Does the game have any sort of defined "ending"? What worries me about it is that I have "completionist" tendencies, so if the game is open-ended, or would require thousands of hours to "complete" everything, I don't know if I would be able to "quit" it before then. Even if it's good, I don't know if I want to use that much of my game time on one game.

Each expansion pack has a "final boss" so doing their dungeon and beating them is the closest there is to an ending. Also just reaching the level cap, whatever it is (I think it's 90 now).

There's something like 2,000 achievements and I never bothered with those. And there's so many quests that you can't possibly do them all, nor would you want to because there's no point in doing low level quests once you've gotten to a higher level. I think you technically can still accept the quests but they become gray to discourage you from taking them.

I think you'd have to go into the game knowing that you can't possibly do everything. If you can't put yourself in that mindset, then yea it might be dangerous.

I'm expecting Xenoblade X to require a similar mindset, myself. I did every sidequest except a few missable ones and by the end the only thing I could do if I wanted to was beat some of the high level enemies, but it didn't seem worth the trouble. This new one looks like it will have more stuff plus online content and paid DLC. I'm going to exercise restraint... hopefully.

Well, I showed Nathalie Game Explain's video review and she was intrigued. I didn't realize there was house decoration stuff too. She's a big Animal Crossing fan so that's another bonus. Went ahead and took the plunge. She already had $8 in eShop funds that we'd forgotten about so it felt like only a $20 purchase. Fingers crossed that she gets hooked and starts playing it instead of Candy Crush Saga

@Jargon
It is a fantastic game, hope you two enjoy it.
06/19/15, 16:08
I did forgot about the house decoration, though it's kind of a minor feature. The catalogue of furniture is nowhere close to Animal Crossing, for sure. You can own three houses though, or six with the DLC, so you can have various themes on display. Plus you can to craft the furniture instead of just waiting for it to appear in a shop, giving you more reason to go get some loot!
06/19/15, 22:22
Well, I went ahead and bought the game since it's on sale now. Haven't started it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Heard nothing but good things so far!

Tips; Start with lives which allow you to forage (like Woodcutter, Angler, Miner, etc). Then you'll have those foraging abilities throughout the game and not be behind later on.
06/20/15, 22:29
The early indications are looking good. She played for hours last night and when I called her during my lunch break she was playing again.
06/23/15, 05:48
I've created a monster. It was Nathalie's day off and she spent all day playing the game. Didn't do the laundry or any errands. What have I done?

I must say I'm pretty intrigued to try the game myself. Kind of wish I'd picked up my own copy. Oh well, I'll give it a spin on her 2DS once she's had some more time with it.
06/24/15, 11:11
In case you didn't see yet, there are three character save slots, so you can create your own without interfering with her game.
