Fantasy Life on the 3DS
9.14/10 from 5 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Fantasy Life on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Fantasy Life is an RPG with a mix of elements. You first create your own character from a variety of character options, and then you can choose one of twelve "lives" to start off with (think classes or jobs in other RPGs). But don't worry, you have the option to switch between all twelve and can master each one. Different lives excel at different tasks such as crafting, cooking, gathering, fighting, and more. Some people (like Nintendo) compare this game to Animal Crossing but it's really more akin to Rune Factory, as it's more about taking on quests, crafting, gathering, and other such activities than it is about interactions with townsfolk. There are also multiple towns to visit, and the villagers are a lot less in-depth than AC, plus the game does not run in real-time. You can still get a house to fill with furniture though, so AC fans may still like this game.

How Online (and local) Multiplayer Works

-DLC Warning: If you buy the DLC, you will not be able to play multiplayer with anyone who does not have the DLC, and vice versa.

-Multiplayer supports up to three players in one world. The NA, EU, and AU versions of the game are all compatible with each other, but cannot play with the JPN version.

-All players must be on each other's 3DS friend list in order to visit a world. If you try to join someone's world which has two players in it and it won't let you in, it's probably because you are not 3DS friends with the other visitor.

-You cannot advance the story in multiplayer. It would be ideal to first unlock some areas before hosting.

-You do not need to stick together in multiplayer, you are free to travel independently to any part of the world.

-You can fast-travel to the location of another player or the Castele Guild Office, but you cannot fast-travel to any homes. You can still use the airship service to travel from town to town, as well as escorts.

-Items that drop from defeated monsters, felled trees, mined rocks, treasure chests, and fishing spots are not shared, and appear specific to each player. So when you pick up a drop, it will still be visible and available to the other player(s).

-Items that appear on the ground such as flowers, weeds, bugs, etc. are shared. If you pick up a flower, it will disappear for the other player(s) too and won;t be there for them to grab also.

-Bounties are also shared. When turning in a bounty, you will receive as many items are there are players, giving you the option of using the exchange box to share the reward with the other player(s). Only 3 bounties can appear in the world at one time; if a 4th one appears, the oldest one will disappear.

-The Guild Office in Castele has an exchange box which can be used to give/trade items and equipment with the other player(s). There are no limits to what can be given. DO NOT leave any items in the box when you disconnect from multiplayer, or they will disappear for good!

-The game cannot be saved in multiplayer, except when using the exchange box. It may be a good idea to take save breaks if playing for long stretches.

-When a player is going through the loading screen from one area to another, some weird quirks might happen. If you try to pick up a shared item or perform an activity like cutting a tree, you may find that your character freezes in place for a moment, followed by a message that reads "Synchronizing..." before you can move again. If this quirk happens when no player(s) are on a loading screen, and you're unable to perform these actions, then it's lag. Usually, having every player leave the area and come back will fix it.

-You cannot switch your Life in multiplayer, so be sure to choose the one you want before connecting.

-You can still complete active Life challenges and sidequests when playing, but you cannot accept or turn them in until you return to single player.

-You are free to craft/cook/alchemize all you want.

-You cannot use pets or CPU allies in multiplayer.

-You cannot rent a horse in multiplayer. Only the host can use a horse, and only one they own.

-Press Start or Select to snap a photo, saved to the SD card. Photos cannot be viewed in-game.

@gtarrant @ploot I don't think I have either of you added on 3DS, not entirely sure, haven't looked at my friend list in a while. My code's in my profile, I'll add you later. gtarrant, what is your code?

I typically play in the evening/night, but it would probably be easier to arrange sometime to play. Also, the game's in-game text chat is kinda sluggish, so we may also want to go into NW's chat if you can do so during play.

@ploot I think it does have some similarities to Animal Crossing (fishing, chopping, clothing, collecting, furnishing a house), and I think people who liked Animal Crossing would probably be into this game too. But it certainly has many differences from Animal Crossing as well and is not the same type of game. I think the reason Nintendo compare this game to AC is that it's the closest thing Nintendo have made that's similar. A better comparison would be to a game like Rune Factory, but Nintendo don't publish that one.

Rune Factory meets Animal Crossing meets Dragon Quest IX. That's probably the best way to describe the game as it has several elements from those three games. But even that can be a bit confusing as it doesn't say which elements of those games Fantasy Life has. It can be a tough game to describe and explain why it's entertaining, though for me, a large part of it is being able to play with my friend. Without multiplayer, I don't think I'd be enthralled with this game, which is the same deal with AC for me.

I think that's for the best. Animal Crossing was cute but it got old after a couple weeks. This seems more like Disney Magical World where you can do different things and get quests and all that. She'd love it.

How is the music?
11/08/14, 19:47
Music's pretty catchy.

There are plenty of life challenges and quests in the game, but there's also plenty of combat, so someone would need to be into that. The fighting mechanics are simple enough to grasp and the normal enemies shouldn't pose too much threat unless you stumbled into an area you shouldn't be in yet. But there are some large monsters scattered about that are typically too strong for you the first time you meet them, and should be avoided until you get way stronger. Fortunately, these enemies won't roam out of their designated areas, so you can run from them and they won't pursuit.

I just Mastered Mercenary so now I have Mastered that plus: Wood Cutter, Miner, Carpenter, Blacksmith, and Magician. Completely loving this game and I cannot stop playing it.
11/08/14, 21:00
I played this whenever I had free time today. I just can't get enough!
I ran around mining ore and reeling in fish while my wife played as a hunter. All my spoils also became hers.
I LOVE THIS GAME.
11/09/14, 06:53
@gtarrant@ploot I've added you both.
11/11/14, 04:38
@Mop it up
I'll add you tomorrow.
What chapter are you on?
I haven't moved very far because I want all of the Lives to be at least Adept before I move on with the story. At that point I should be able to focus on my wizard, while also being able to mine, fish, etc. and passively upgrade my other Lives.
I've played about 30 hours and I've only completed three chapters. Maybe four??
11/11/14, 07:31
@ploot

I'm going through the game at pretty much the same pace: just started chapter 4, 25 hours into the game. A few of my jobs are Expert level, but most are Adept.

I don't think I'll bother leveling up all the combat classes, though. What's the point? I'll stick with Hunter.
11/11/14, 16:50
@Guillaume
I was thinking the same thing.

I'll probably Adept all of the combat Lives just to get a taste, then just stick with my Wizard from then on.

How are you liking the game? I bet you enjoy the fact you can skip the rather talkative intro missions.
11/11/14, 17:39
@ploot

Haha, I skipped them all! And I find myself mashing the A button most of the time during dialogues as usual, although some of the writing is so funny, it's a shame to miss it.

I'm really liking the game. It's pretty much Alchemy in Dragon Quest IX: The Game, which is what I expected, and what I wanted. Most of your time is spent wandering around, collecting stuff, hoping to create the next "recipee".
11/11/14, 18:04   Edit:  11/11/14, 18:05
I have added some important information to the opening post about how multiplayer works, both online and off. I suggest giving it a read to understand the quirks of it.

@ploot I believe I just finished chapter 4. It took me 30 hours just to get through chapter 1, there's just so much else to do! I'm unfortunately pretty far advanced however, as I have all but one Life at Master rank (stupid Mercenary not showing me enough challenges to rank up!). That's the problem with being an insomniac, plus my friend is obsessed with this game and always wants to play it!
11/11/14, 21:50
@Mop it up
Did you purchase the DLC?
11/12/14, 00:27
Oh, I forgot to mention Ally Mode! You can turn on Ally Mode to send messages to anyone else who is also online in Ally Mode, and you'll also receive notifications about the things they achieve in their world. Be sure to select which 3DS friends you want to ally with to enable it with them. Ally Mode can't be turned on in multiplayer.

If any of you see me online in Ally Mode, feel free to send me a message if you want to meet up.

@gtarrant Not yet. My friend and I decided that we're going to wait until we reach lvl 99 and max out a few skills before we get the DLC.
11/12/14, 07:39
@Mop it up
Ah crap, we can't play online then until you do.
11/12/14, 09:20
Bummer. Something to look forward to a bit later, I s'pose!
11/13/14, 00:32
Well, I'm definitely in if you guys are playing online at some point. I'm finding some of the requirements to complete missions (like chop this specific tree as a lumberjack) annoying, because often it's something I've done already, but as another Life. So if we could get one Lumberjack, one Angler, etc. completing missions like that in multiplayer, I think we ALL get credit for them.

So. Tonight or some other time?
11/14/14, 17:40
@Guillaume
Oooh! Sounds like fun.
Although, I still don't have all the areas open yet and I sort of want to do that during my story progression.
I'm only up to Port Puerto and its surrounding areas.
11/14/14, 18:05
@ploot

That's okay, I think all areas are opened up during multiplayer. But if you don't want to visit them yet, we don't have to. We can just get resources and explore the caves on Mount Snowpeak and around Port Puerto. Exploring them by myself is kind of a drag, IMO.

I'll be home at 9pm, so there's plenty of time for you to advance a little bit, too!

I've got quests as Miner, Angler, Lumberjack, Mercenary, Wizard and Paladin that I've yet to complete in Elderwood, Mount Snowpeak, etc. So…
11/14/14, 19:00   Edit:  11/14/14, 19:02
@Guillaume
Cool. I just have to play in the Mario Kart tourney at 9:15, so maybe closer to 10?
Anybody else in?
If not, Trish will join us.
