ROUND ONE: Super Smash Bros. Stages Bracket! (BUMPER BRACKET)

Good evening fellow Negative Worlders! In hot anticipation of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games, I've decided to find out what is the favorite Super Smash Bros. stage from the past games as decided by Negative World! After Jargon's very successful March Madness Bracket earlier this year, I thought it would be great to use that style once again. Here's a few notes and stipulations.

1.) The stages are only selected from Super Smash Bros. (N64), Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. No upcoming stages are included and lets not discuss them either! Spoilers! #riversong
2.) If a stage was featured in more than one game, it is still only included on here once.
3.) Final Destination and Battlefield also have this rule applied to them.
4.) I'm lacking the slick graphics that Jargon's thread had and I don't have logos to use, so small images of the stages take the place of text. Things will continue to be clear though as we progress. Each thread will feature the text to choose so there isn't any issues there.
5.) Polls will be open for roughly two days, give or take a little while. I won't be able to post the same exact time each bracket but I'll try to give the same amount of time for all parts.
6.) The numbers before each stage only serve as a way for me to more easily keep track of levels. They have no other meaning.
7.) The stage pairings were chosen at complete random. I know this isn't the same as a March Madness bracket where seeds help determine things, but I figured a random order (by a randomizer) was the fairest start.

Many stages enter, only one will win as Negative World's Favorite Super Smash Bros. stage!
Here are the first match ups.

(22) Rainbow Cruise (Melee/Brawl) vs. (60) Spear Pillar (Brawl)
(10) Brinstar (Melee/Brawl) vs. (63) Hanenbow (Brawl)
(14) Icicle Mountain (Melee) vs. (53) Summit (Brawl)

(55) Shadow Moses Island (Brawl) vs. (31) Flat Zone (Melee)
(27) Battlefield (Melee/Brawl) vs. (5) Yoshi's Island (N64/Melee)

(22) Rainbow Cruise (Melee/Brawl) vs. (60) Spear Pillar (Brawl)
(10) Brinstar (Melee/Brawl) vs. (63) Hanenbow (Brawl)
(14) Icicle Mountain (Melee) vs. (53) Summit (Brawl)
(50) Castle Siege (Brawl) vs. (11) Corneria (Melee/Brawl)

(40) Bridge of Eldin (Brawl) vs. (33) Kingdom II (Melee)
(41) Rumble Falls (Brawl) vs. (59) Luigi's Mansion (Brawl)
(55) Shadow Moses Island (Brawl) vs. (31) Flat Zone (Melee)
(27) Battlefield (Melee/Brawl) vs. (5) Yoshi's Island (N64/Melee)

1. Rainbow Cruise is a decent Super Mario 64-inspired stage, and Spear Pillar is downright awful.
2. Brinstar is a bit small but otherwise it's decent, Hanenbow is pretty stupid and I don't even know what game it's from.
3. Not a fan of either, but Icicle Mountain wins for having less cheap hazards.
4. Corneria was okay, just a shrunken down N64 stage though, so could be better. But Castel Siege was pretty boring.

5. Mushroom Kingdom II was a pretty fun stage in Melee, Bridge of Eldin is just Final Destination with no side pits.
6. Luigi's Mansion was an interesting idea for a stage, Rumble Falls is just a worse version of Icicle Mountain.
7. Flat Zone was a pretty neat stage, Shadow Moses Island didn't fit at all.
8. Battlefield is a nice classic layout, Yoshi's Island is my least fave from the N64 game, it has too much air space and the slanted platforms just don't flow well.

I appreciate everyone who comments on what you did or didn't like. I'll do the same.

1. I always found Spear Pillar to be kinda bad. You're so segregated and then the random giant laser takes away my incentive to go into the cave. So despite not LOVING moving levels, the Rainbow Cruise wins out.

2. I always liked Brinstar and always felt compelled to break the one part from the other. Hanenbow is cool looking but I never really understood the stage. It's a little hard to tell what has platform use and the fact there's no real single platform of any length kinda makes me dislike it.

3. I can't really stand Ice Climber stuff but I liked the singular mountain over the moving stage.

4. Both are nice levels IMO. Castle Siege wins out though for having a nice aesthetic that changes from time to time.

5. Kingdom II always just pushed me to the center of the stage. I liked Bridge of Eldin more, plus there's the random hole in the middle.

6. Rumble Falls isn't shabby if you're talking about moving stages but it's a bad overall stage with annoying accidental hazards. Luigi's Mansion owns. I hope it goes far this competition.

7. I liked the look and feel of Shadow Moses Island. Flat Zone isn't bad either but isn't anything special IMO.

8. I enjoy both levels. There's totally a use for Battlefield but I miss Yoshi's Story as a whole and my nostalgia makes me miss this level too.

@Mop it up

What makes the fish "cheap"? He can be avoided with skill and strategy.

@Jargon

I think the only appropriate solution is that DrFink sets up a CPU battle between characters representing their game's stage...held on a neutral stage, of course.

I like that idea! Not sure who would represent Hanenbow though

@Jargon

I figured R.O.B. could be the if-needed replacement character.

Cool, it's been awhile since we've done something like this.

(22) Rainbow Cruise (Melee/Brawl) vs. (60) Spear Pillar (Brawl)
(10) Brinstar (Melee/Brawl) vs. (63) Hanenbow (Brawl)
(14) Icicle Mountain (Melee) vs. (53) Summit (Brawl)
(50) Castle Siege (Brawl) vs. (11) Corneria (Melee/Brawl)

(40) Bridge of Eldin (Brawl) vs. (33) Kingdom II (Melee)
(41) Rumble Falls (Brawl) vs. (59) Luigi's Mansion (Brawl)
(55) Shadow Moses Island (Brawl) vs. (31) Flat Zone (Melee)
(27) Battlefield (Melee/Brawl) vs. (5) Yoshi's Island (N64/Melee)

Really easy picks this time around for the most part. I'm kinda curious to see where this goes...

1A: Like most people, I'm not crazy about scrolling stages. Rainbow Cruise is pretty okay, but Spear Pillar wins this. It's just crazy enough to be interesting to me.
1B: This was the closest matchup to me--don't really love either of these. But I liked seeing Electroplankton represented in Smash, and Brinstar felt way too similar to the Zebes level in the N64 game. Acid/cavern Metroid stages in Smash are pretty dull--Metroid has so many other types of levels, and I wanna see 'em!
1C: Summit by far. Icicle Mountain was possibly Melee's weakest level. Summit had some great music (Shin Onigashima!) and a fun gimmick.
1D: I like both, but Corneria is one of my all-time favorite Smash levels. Just the right amount of dynamism to it.

2A: Eldin had a great look to it and a unique hook--large, flat stage. Kingdom 2 was kinda neat too. I'll go Zelda.
2B: I don't think anyone's voted Rumble Falls yet. Way too chaotic; Luigi's the way to go here.
2C: Shadow Moses Island made for some really exciting battles. Flat Zone always felt extremely tiny to me. Its really close blast zones make for some frustrating KOs.
2D: Battlefield is a good neutral stage. I definitely prefer the Brawl/SSB4 approach with its cool day/night dynamic. Yoshi's Island was one of the more blah N64 stages to me; strange cloud layout and weird verticality.

Wtf is this thread, Sudoku?

I really am not getting all these random numbers everywhere. Then TBun has to make it even more confusing with 1A, ZR, BRB, MADD, F5478.

Wtf.

@carlosrox

Adjust to the acronyms ASAP!

People don't like scrolling stages? I guess they are hit or miss for me, but I love Rainbow Cruise, one of my favorite stages in the whole series.

@Zero

Yea it's really only the scrolling up stages that I hate. And I hate the Mushroomy Kingdom stages but only because they're so ugly. If they kept the retro style they'd be fine.

Fun! Let's see...

(22) Rainbow Cruise (Melee/Brawl) vs. (60) Spear Pillar (Brawl)
(10) Brinstar (Melee/Brawl) vs. (63) Hanenbow (Brawl)
(14) Icicle Mountain (Melee) vs. (53) Summit (Brawl)
(50) Castle Siege (Brawl) vs. (11) Corneria (Melee/Brawl)

(40) Bridge of Eldin (Brawl) vs. (33) Kingdom II (Melee)
(41) Rumble Falls (Brawl) vs. (59) Luigi's Mansion (Brawl)
(55) Shadow Moses Island (Brawl) vs. (31) Flat Zone (Melee)
(27) Battlefield (Melee/Brawl) vs. (5) Yoshi's Island (N64/Melee)

As for the scrolling stage controversy, the vertical ones kind of suck. And the Super Mario Bros one is too confined. But I love Poke Floats and Rainbow Cruise. Brawl's scrollers were so-so.

Oddly enough, my favorite level is probably the Mario Bros. one. It's hilarious.

(14) Icicle Mountain (Melee) vs. (53) Summit (Brawl)
(50) Castle Siege (Brawl) vs. (11) Corneria (Melee/Brawl)

(41) Rumble Falls (Brawl) vs. (59) Luigi's Mansion (Brawl)

(27) Battlefield (Melee/Brawl) vs. (5) Yoshi's Island (N64/Melee)

I really hate Spear Pillar. If there weren't those stupid pokemon doing random shit it would be a decent stage.
09/25/14, 05:50
@Zero @Jargon Yeah, I like Rainbow Cruise because it scrolls slowly and there is a break period where there is no scrolling. I thought it was an interesting mix and it doesn't get manic like the other scrolling stages, which become more about a battle against the stage and I never find that fun.

@anon_mastermind That's how I feel about it as well.
