Hyrule Warriors Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U
8.25/10 from 11 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Through all the stories and all the timelines found in the Zelda series... nobody saw this coming. Koei Tecmo and Nintendo team up to take the Dynasty Warriors formula, toss in a lot of Zelda-franchise fan service, and blend that stuff together in a funky mish-mash of Zelda lore that only the Wind Fish could dream up. That game is called Hyrule Warriors.

I was admittedly hesitant on this title upon first announcement. I had no idea what the Dynasty Warriors franchise was all about. I knew I loved Zelda. It wasn't until the excellent Nintendo Direct (embedded below) which sold me on the idea. I'm seeing a lot of reviews, which started coming in today, and they seem to agree that this isn't much of a Zelda game. I have to point out, the name borrows the Warriors from Dynasty Warriors and not Zelda. This alone helps me see what Koei Tecmo and Nintendo were aiming for. This isn't going to be a Zelda main-line game nor is it striving to be. For what it's goals are, and for what Nintendo has contributed to it, I'm pretty excited myself and now there's less than 10 days remaining. The game releases on September 26th, 2014.

Fun Facts
1.) Sends Link and 12 other playable characters from various Zelda universes into other universes. Mixing things up!
2.) Loaded with various locales, enemies, bosses, items, and music from throughout the Legend of Zelda series.
3.) Series offers plenty of DLC options (detailed below).
4.) Tons of combos and special moves for each character.
5.) 2-player Co-Op (though I hear it's pretty hard on the Wii U processing)
6.) Unique 'Adventure Mode' taking players back into the NES' The Legend of Zelda for a mix of challenges and adventure! (at least on the map)

Kinda scary. I imagine 250 is next? I wonder if they'll raise it again with the boss pack in March.

Also that mission reset option is so useful in some of the harder missions to try and get Gold Skultulas. It resets and starts you on the battlefield instantly.

I have only done about the first 8 missions but I am loving the hell outta this game! In a weird and slightly uncomfortable way, it is quickly vying for the top spot in my list of favorite Legend of Zelda titles. That's just ... weird, right??

Anyway, but there is a bit of a buzzkill on the DLC. I know most everyone seems to love DLC and that it makes me some kind of lamer from Squaresville for thinking it's a consumer-unfriendly business model. But, I feel that this content should have been on the disc from the start. Especially since, if I'm not mistaken, most if not all of this content was planned, if not ready, at launch. I can't support that and it makes me sad because I feel like 15 years ago this stuff would have been included from the start, or, at worst, an expansion pack.

Now, I'm not looking to start the world's 19,745th debate on DLC and I'm not looking to convince anyone to change their mind on DLC. I'm just adding my voice to the topic.

Back to the happy part though, the game is phenomenal. I'm so glad it got made and it's such a pleasant surprise. I'm already hoping for a sequel or even off-shoot franchise to emerge from this, but, it feels like a one-off for a lot of reasons. =\ Ah well. Glad we got this one at least! =)

@NinSage

I don't think I've heard anything about the DLC being ready at launch. Planned maybe (there was a season pass obviously) but we've also gotten several updates that added new stuff as well. I'm not a big fan of DLC that feels as if it was cut out of the main game or simply extends the story but in this case, it's purely added content for fan service. I'm okay with that and I had already enjoyed the heck out of the main game. Plus a new update is coming next week that I posted about on the previous page. More challenges and new features for all users. I enjoy that we're still getting support like this so long after launch and for free. It's a huge game so it's nice to have these things spaced out.

@NinSage

I totally get (and agree with, for the most part) that point of view. To me, Hyrule Warriors gets a pass for a couple reasons. The first is that we don't really have any evidence that the DLC was ready to go. The core game doesn't really have any notable missing features or anything that suggests its lacking in content. The second is related to that--HW, even without DLC, is a REALLY long game to 100%. It could definitely give players over 100 hours of content with its basic features alone. The DLC adds a ridiculous amount of new gameplay for those that want it, but there's still a huge amount to do in the core game.

The last thing is that Koei's been very good about giving free updates that give players more to shoot for (like more medals and a higher level cap). And 3 extra free playable characters!

I do think the DLC is worth it in this case, but even if you don't want it, the core game has plenty to keep you occupied for a good while.

It is undoubtedly a gigantic game right out of the box. That was never in question. It's just a perception thing and so I shared my perspective. I think a lot of times this topic can be compared to looking at a group of clouds and trying to decide where one cloud ends. In other words, everyone probably has their own criteria for whether or not the game they've purchased feels complete -- and "time to credits" is just one factor. We can probably all relate to that, yea?

So, to me, though you can clearly make an argument that some content is "part of the game" and some is not... it's just "extra," to me, as I look at the DLC, it all feels like "part of the game." And, to be fair, I'm not sure I could think of something that was offered as part of a game's DLC that I wouldn't then consider to be "part of the game." It's almost by definition in my opinion.

Again, my point in sharing this is not to convince anyone of anything. Only to try and make my opinions a little easier to understand (for anyone who cares =P ). So, let me share this: a lot of my frustration with DLC stems from how I would wrestle with the process. Maybe if I had better income this would not be the case, but I'm very careful and deliberate with my purchases. I tend to put a lot of thought into deciding whether or not I want something and then, if I want it, I try to make it happen financially. That decision-making process is not particularly comfortable or enjoyable for me. I don't like doing it. So, the more companies make me have to do it, the less happy I am about the whole thing. Doesn't mean I can't still totally LOVE that thing. But, that love may have been dampened a little.

I'm also rather OCD when it comes to works of fiction. You should ask my wife sometime about how I make notes that try to put huge game franchises like Castlevania in their proper chronological order. That's just one small example

So, if you put those two things together, it means that I would literally rather have something never come out than have it come out as DLC. I know, I've just lost all my credibility, right? But, I see it like this... if something really is "extra" then, leave it on the cutting room floor and don't make me wrestle with those processes I just described. And if something is part of the proper game, then include it from day one and let's all sing songs of joy. =)

....whew. That was a lot. Maybe it made sense, maybe it didn't. ... but, it's frickin' late - cut me some slack =)

@VofEscaflowne

...Boss Pack? Is that still part of the original $19.99 package?

I haven't read anything, and I don't need spoiling, but do I need to purchase something else? Its been nice sitting back and having DLC just dumped in my lap without having to "do" anything.

@Mr_Mustache

It's part of the season pass and as far as I know, this is the final pack.

I can't even contain my excitement in using Sheik and Impa in this game. Sooooooooo awesome. All my Sheik dreams are coming true!!
02/20/15, 01:56
@NinSage

I'm not a huge fan of either of them. Sheik is kind of interesting to use but I feel she is really slow at killing large crowds of enemies. Impa's alright but definitely not one of my favorites to play as.
02/20/15, 05:30
@VofEscaflowne

Has more to do with my love of the characters than their effectiveness in the game mechanics. Though, I am pretty comfortable with them. The only one I'm not real comfortable with so far is Midna. Is Midna like real strong or something? Cuz it seems like I can't hit very rapidly or big crowds with her. But, probably a lot more to learn about her.
02/20/15, 06:03
Midna's really great I think. She has a nice long range attack and several skills for good crowd control which sets them up for a special attack afterward if you need to use one.

Logged some long hours on Friday Night. Man, Master Quest can get TOUGH sometimes. I can't believe some of you guys have 100%'d those Adventure Maps!

@VofEscaflowne

Early on, Sheik was my go-to player for crushing anything. Haven't played with Sheik in a while.

@VofEscaflowne

Ugh, you got any tips for FIGHTING Midna? I can't get past the blocking. I did one of those "don't get hit" missions in the Master Q A Map (I had to play as Volga..do you know the one?), and Midna was just DUSTING me. I was able to dispatch all the little guys and Agitha no problem, but Midna was just skunking me all over the place.

Maybe it's playing Majora's Mask again, but I've been in a Zelda fervor all week, I finally went ahead and took the plunge, I bought this puppy, downloading now!

Part of me is excited like "yay Zelda!", but the other part of me is like... WTF I JUST BOUGHT A DYNASTY WARRIORS GAME? lol

It's OK. That's perfectly natural. Take a few deep breathes, calmly load up the game, and let the healing begin. =)

If you still experience Dynasty-related anxiety (DRA), repeat the following mantra: "I'm not a bad person for playing a Dynasty game. I'm a worthwhile person who happens to play a Dynasty game."

Seek immediate medical attention if the desire to play other Dynasty Warrior games lasts for more than 4 hours.

..... ahhh, I kid. I have often thought that I might enjoy some of the Dynasty games if a few small tweaks were made.

@NinSage
Haha, that's hilarious! I didn't necessarily feel like a bad person... but I did feel like a small child waging war on a tiny colony of ants! I'm not used to games where I'm basically a God and I can slaughter hundreds of enemies in seconds.

But wow, so far I'm impressed, it's a cool game, but very different than what I thought even after reading a ton of reviews, like it seems it's basically a rush against the clock, there is no challenge in defeating enemies, and the only time I've failed a mission is when I've been ignoring the goals and/or not doing them fast enough. I'm not a huge fan of this system because I don't like games with time limits, and even though there is usually no visible clock this game seems to be keeping track of time in the background.

Also is it bad that I sort of want to just skip the story and play Adventure Mode? Adventure Mode RULES!

And... I love the music, especially the rock versions of classic Zelda tunes, they're hilarious and badass at the same time.

And... should I just play with the Classic Controller? The WUG seems to have been ignored, there's no option to even move the map or HUD to the bottom screen, so I guess it serves no purpose at all.

EDIT: Questions, does it ever get to a point where you can decided which keep to take over etc.? Is there any strategy or does the battle always play out in a linear fashion and require you to do the specific actions in the order the NPCs tell you to? I think I'd like this game a lot more if I could win or lose a battle based on which points on the map I decided to attack.

@deathly_hallows

There's a bit more strategy involved in harder levels. Still not a TON but if you know you must make sure that your keep survives, then it's usually wise to capture keeps that are surrounding it or are in line from the enemy's path to make it harder for them. Some missions will also have you capture certain keeps under various conditions.

And yes, use the classic controller. The GamePad does offer some nice details but once you get used to the gameplay, it's usually nothing too important. Better battery life and comfortable to use!
02/25/15, 20:51
@VofEscaflowne
Hmm, that's unfortunate about the WUG, seems like they could have found some cool ways to use it, oh well, classic it is!

I just wish there was a way to turn off the screen altogether in these cases, it would be nice if they made it so you could boot up the system with the classic controller and not have to mess with the WUG at all.
02/25/15, 23:07
@deathly_hallows

You've always been able to turn off the GamePad. Just press the Home button and at the top right, you can access controller options. You can turn it off from there. Of course there's no way to power on the system without turning on the GamePad altogether but it's better than nothing.

Wait wat?

I NEVER KNEW THAT.
02/26/15, 01:08
@VofEscaflowne
Holy cow! I never knew that! Thanks, good info, not as convenient as using the pro controller to boot up the system but at least this will allow me to be ultra lazy and not have to walk the 5 feet from the couch to the TV stand to put the WUG back into it's charging cradle.
