Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Ugh. Bayonetta was not nerfed enough. At all. Why won't she and Cloud just go away.
05/21/16, 08:12
Uh oh. I wanna try matches against her, see how she stacks up. In the hands of a deadly player even nerfs won't matter.
05/21/16, 08:45
@carlosrox

Indeed. Considering I'm no where near pro level, she probably was nerf'd quite a bit. Just not enough for my tastes. I haven't noticed that many tweaks to the characters after the various updates, as I'm not that serious a player, but I have noticed a few. With Bayonetta, the only thing I noticed from this latest update is that her five or so rapid fire slide kick combo was slowed down at the very end to allow one to break away.

I have noticed other nerfs in the past, such as Jigglypuff's rest move - with it being perfect right at launch, and then nerf'd to Brawl level after an update. And either it was always like this or I just noticed after one of the updates, but Ness' yo-yo move seems seriously nerf'd. The string of the yo-yo used to be damaging, I thought, and limited one from breaking away or in during the move. Now it's just a powerless string, thus limiting the effectiveness of the move. It was always a good move to get players out of your personal space. Now they can just hop in and play jump rope. And I guess they're never going to fix Marth and Lucina?

I'm surprised most people are okay with Cloud as is. I think he just has too many things going for him. He's fast, has a massively powerful and varying charge move, super long reach, good jumping, good recovery, powerful combos, and so on. HE NEEDS TO GO. But I digress.

At least Little Mac can grab the ledge right away.

You can also effortlessly edgeguard him with Mario's F.L.U.D.D, too. Learn how to hit him on the ledge, timing your attacks right, and it won't take too long to get your sweet revenge.

I don't even see Clouds that often and when I do they never seem all that great. Haven't seen a Bayo yet and I've played some time of FG since the patch.
05/23/16, 12:43
I saw Cloud pretty much nonstop any time I played from December to March or so. Been a while since I've seen any, but I haven't been playing all that much.

Another reason why this game is just so totally rad...

Even after all these years/months, it just treated me to that awesome milestone jingle and message prompt. I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing that.

I'll never tire of this game! It took me until Smash 4 to make me realize how much I love Smash. I loved Melee when it was out, and I played mostly single player, barring later years when I'd play some friends. I didn't ever even own 64, but I loved MP with my friends' copy at their place. Brawl I also really liked but didn't even realize I didn't like it as much as I did Melee until later. And thay was mostly single player as well barring some times my friends would come play it. Smash 4 has easily trumped every game in the series for me. Love the...everything about it. I still want to (and do) play this game on a near daily basis. 1v1 is so satisfying, and obviously even more enjoyable as you get better. I want Smash NX ASAP. I'd gladly buy a port of Smash 4. There's still a ton of shit I haven't done with challenges and all that, and entire modes I haven't even touched yet. Since launch I still haven't once opened the Stage Builder mode lol.

And of course I have more great replays to share :)

I read something the other day that reminded me of the unpleasant For Glory runs some of us have had, and it may explain why.
TLDR: Smash has a "Report Player" function somewhere in its labyrinth of menus, and a player can report you for any reason (or no reason) and you'll never know. Once you're reported, you can only play other players who have been reported, in "Smash Hell", for a short while. And of course, the people who have been reported are generally unpleasant, and also spiteful enough to keep reporting you for any reason (or no reason) to keep you in Smash Hell longer.

So that might explain why I tend to encounter people with tags like "U SUK" and "N!GG3R" and "KYS" in bunches or not at all. What a broken system.

@NoName Yep, there's a million things to love about Smash games. I don't think I've made it to the 4000 battles milestone yet, but I hit 3000 a while ago, so I've gotta be close...!

@carlosrox We should play sometime! I've gotten a bit tired of For Glory, where the skill level is so variable. Sometimes I'm matched with people who seem like beginners, other times I get stomped, and every now and then I'll get a good, even match. I only hop on once every few weeks now, for an hour or so.

This was my first replay/game after not playing for about 2 weeks a while back. Came back in style. Don't call it a comeback.

I don't remember the backstory with this one but this guy was a dick. The replay doesn't show how annoying he was. Stupid 3 minute limit.

There's nothing like getting your ass kicked then turning the tables on them and not losing confidence. It's so awesome and rewarding. Nothing like a real SCRAP.

Rosalina decimated. Rosalina used to kick my ass before. Actually I'm very happy with this replay. And god knows it makes me wanna play right now.

Spammy/Campy Link. God I love this replay too. Really good use of baiting Link to do his easy up smash that people like to spam and punishing them for it. In fact I need to think about that more when I play. The whole reach and distance game is amazing. Love that part where we're bothing trading Smashes and blocks. So good. Yeah rewatching this blows me away. Smash is fucking perfection.

ZSS still gives me trouble. Round 1.

Round 2 with same ZSS. Came back with something to prove. Good fight. God the music is so good along with the sound effects and game mechanics.

Versus Metaknight, which is something I don't see much. The maneuverability in this game. So good.

A Captain Falcon looking for trouble! Tough round.

Surprised he didn't get 1 KO.

I'm sure this guy taunted me unprovoked so you know how I do.

Another.

Ouch. And yes this was also taunt revenge.

I love the end of this.

Oh wow that's a comeback. He had me so hard there. He was about to avenge a loss.

He ended it with this fight and saying "NICE SPAM" and "UR BAD" looooool. After these last 4 replays. He musta been mad. And especially with that ending! I'd have been pissed too lol.

THIS IS JUST ABOUT THE SPAMMIEST FUCK I'VE EVER FOUGHT! Jusssssssssst about!! And I think Baby Bowser IS the most annoying fucking in the game at this point. And I can't figure the good ones out. It doesn't help I hardly ever see them so when I do I'm caught with my pants down. I barely understand any of the character's moves.

This guy got on my fucking nerves in later rounds.

Awesome round but I hate that I got sloppy at one bit AND died.

Watch this guy quit mid round lol. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Hot fuckin' round. Becomes quite a death game.

Now we gettin' to the more recent ones and these are pretty good. Love the finish to this one.

Some vurr nice shit. Dat ending.

Another Sonic that I fought right after. Great round.

Actually this is a really good round. Man I love this Other M track. One of my fave Metroid tracks ever. Straight sounds like Aliens.

Ah here's a Cloud round! I love this match. The ending is fantastic.

Crazy comeback against a character I'm not the best against. Especially before. WFT was hard to get.

Second round against WFT. Tough round.

First Bayo fight in a while!! She not so tough anymore! I usually don't get up smash KOs with Samus.

Bayo round 2! That second KO doesn't even look like it hit.

Bayonetta 3. And there's more up smash KOs.

Nice play off the edge.

Ugh this was annoying. I hate her down special.

This is quite the beating.

Rough Ryu Round. Good but weird KO.

Same Ryu quit in the rematch. Really entitled sore losers. That "win or I'm not playing" mentality is shit. He earned that taunt on his way out.

And yet another quitter. What a dick.

Hemad.

Yet ANOTHER quitter.

And finally (for now LOL) 2 Samuses go toe to toe.

Geeeez that's a lotta videos.

I didn't know where to put this, so I guess I'll put it here. Slime should be in Smash Bros!

07/28/16, 05:08
Yeah all the videos just about killed my ancient Macbook trying to load this page, haha.

Slime! I've never played a real DQ game so I don't really have an affinity there, but I'd be down for that. Pretty much all the characters I could want in the game are already in it! Might as well get nutty with any more newcomers.
07/28/16, 06:39
I went overboard didn't I :p ?

@TriforceBun
I'd love to see Slime.
07/28/16, 07:37
@carlosrox

I'd appreciate it if you actually contributed to the thread in a more significant way, dude. These small, tiny, and minuscule posts with nothing significant in them is just a waste. Post some videos or something from your playtime. Do you know how to post videos to this thread?

You should probably post some videos to this thread. If you don't know how, I can teach you. Just let me know.

Seriously, no more of these puny little posts. Get some videos recorded and post them in this thread. If you want to. I don't even know if you even record your matches when you play them online?

But yeah, you should post some videos. If you can/know how to/want to.

Post some videos.

Videos.

Post them.

Will do!

Everyone is an asshole right now.

Smash hell is real. I saw other assholes mentioning it too. All grievers, embarrassing cowards, etc.

Lame.

I have to say that after nearly two years and 4K matches played, I think this to be the worst Smash yet. Not horrible, of course, but not Melee or Brawl level awesome. I'm just so totally over the combo system they let stick and some of the character movesets (and characters in general). This isn't Tekken! We don't need to be able to hit someone eight times in a row in the air. I refuse to do more than a three hit combo. It just seems cheap otherwise. Oh, you like to do the same moveset with Mario and his up throw combo? Good for you! I'm glad that's fun for you. It's not for me. Or you like to play as Donkey Kong and not move from the edge so you can lure people over to throw and meteor smash? That's great! Now, I'm not great at the game, so part of it's that, but I know from years of playing Melee and Brawl, there's been nothing like this. And with respect to Brawl, this version has brought with it the cockiest of players I've ever had the displeasure of playing against online. There are some good people, sure; many of which I'm now "friends" with, but the vast majority are so unabashedly, and unnecessarily arrogant and cocky that it's just pathetic. Or maybe I'm pathetic for taking it too seriously. I have played against some really good people (really good) and I've no qualms with people playing well and beating the caca out of me before I've dealt a blow - if it's skill and not cheap spammy moves. I don't know. To me it's more about having fun. Using different characters and different moves. Trying to win, sure, but enjoying the ride first and foremost. How can it be fun to play as the same character over and over again, using the same limited moveset over and over again? I just don't get it. Ah, my limited kingdom for a Smash refresh on NX.

@NoName

Here's the thing--I think if Melee or Brawl were online, you'd feel the same way. Sometimes, the very nature of online itself can make a game feel bad over time. You're forced to play certain ways.

I recently had a similar revelation with Splatoon (another game I really like)--I just wasn't having fun online. It's so demanding that the enjoyment gets sapped out of it. Either you lose and feel rough, or you win but have to play so intensely that you feel you need to towel off afterward.

Take a break from For Glory, invite a buddy or two over, and enjoy Smash the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

But that's the other players' faults, that happens in every game I find. People will use whatever gives them an edge in winning! It's not even about the fun, the challenge, the skill, etc. For them it's about winning! I fought some people I've wanted to strangle over the last few days and it's all because of how they decide to play within this game's rules! I just fought a Samus last night and it's very very rare when a Samus bests me, but this asshole did and it was all because he was absolutely pathetically camping and spamming to an offensive degree. Smash Normal and Super Missiles at me from the other side of the stage. And now I know these assholes are all showing up because that stupid Smash hell or whatever that happens when you seem to receive a complaint. And I'm sure I did because I must have told off a guy or two who just needed to be told off. So now I'm there.

Trust me, if Melee or Brawl had online, you would be saying the exact same thing about them. Some people play online to be assholes to others, take out their own anger in their life (seriously), or just to win to feel good about themselves. The lows people will stoop to to ensure their win is something people are gonna do. You can see my replays and see that while I can employ certain techniques regularly, I don't incessantly spam them. Don't forget that at this point you're also playing against the people who really enjoy being skillful at the game, have put in many hours, etc. This basically happens to any online game and you will always find people who find THE most effective technique and pathetically stick to it. I can't name how many games I've played online where the playerbase resorted to whatever annoying shit gimmick they could to either win, annoy you, or both. Splatoon has it too. MK8 as well.

Ah and I just glanced up and noticed that TB shares a similar sentiment.

@TriforceBun

When Brawl was online, I had no issues. Truly. And as for local play, not possible for me. But, you are right, when playing online one is forced to play a certain way based on the cards dealt for each session.

@carlosrox

Brawl was online! And save for connection issues, it worked great for me. Maybe as a Nintendo only gamer, I just haven't been exposed enough to how the real online gaming world works.
