Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Anyone have good strategies against Master/Crazy hand? Those guys are much more of a problem for me than any of the Core forms. Whoever decided to put that one attack where he deals cards in there is a real jerk.

Looks like you'll just have to get good enough at Smash Bros.

Has there ever been a strategy as such for these guys? My general approach is simply to dodge like crazy and attack when you have an opening. Not paticulary specific advice really.

The core forms are worse IMO because the attack telegraphing is so different. And I have no idea where it's going to come from, makes dodging a pain.

@Shadowlink

Touche.

The thing is that most of the time I can take them out pretty quickly, but sometimes things go terrible awry and when you're trying to do Level 9, you only get one shot and it's really annoying when you blow it on those guys. I mean, I beat Level 9 on 3DS without dying so it's not like i can't do it, but I was hoping there might be some trick so I wouldn't have to worry about it when doing Classic runs.

@Jargon

Dunno. They're not usually a problem for me, I figure if I escape with 30-40% damage I'm doing ok.

Like I said, it's the core forms that I have issues with. Paticularly the sword one. I'll get chained, have 75%+ damage racked up on me in seconds, then knocked off the stage. What a bitch.
01/16/15, 03:22
@Shadowlink

Yea the sword is definitely the hardest of the Core forms for me too.

Kirby might just be a bad matchup for the hands. I think when I was doing Level 9 with Ike on 3DS I had a much easier time with them.
01/16/15, 03:24
I have the most trouble with Beast form. He seems somehow quicker than in the 3DS version, chaining his attacks together in really brutal ways.
01/16/15, 06:26
@TriforceBun

I really haven't put much time into Classic mode on Wii U, because I played a lot of it on 3DS. You may be right, I did seem to have a tougher time with the Beast on Wii U. On 3DS, it didn't take long for me to get the timing down to just dodge everything.

My problem with the Sword is that there are a few attacks where there's so much going on that it's easy to get distracted and miss the cue to dodge. And I find the sword to be a lot harder to get good shots on since you have to jump, at least with Kirby.

I wish there was a training mode or something that let you practice. Part of it is that the stakes are so high that I'm afraid to try new things that might actually make life a lot easier.
01/16/15, 06:41
@Jargon

Ditto on the training desire for the Master Hands/Core. I don't have an overt amount of trouble with the hands but I just pummel away at the Master Hand till both leave, not much more strategy than that.
01/16/15, 13:28
I don't know of any tricks for the hand boss combo, but the strategy that seems to work best for me is to just stay on the right side and attack Master Hand. He seems more predictable and easier to hit than Crazy, and when the lifting card attack comes, I can jump off the card to the right side and I know there won't be a card on that side since it's over the pit. I guess it depends on the character though because dangling off the edge can be dangerous with characters who have poor jump/recovery.

I'm glad the hands don't stick around for the full HP amount because I think they're the toughest boss.

Aside from them I think the sword is the toughest, because it has wide-reaching attacks and blends in a bit with the background. One thing I have noticed, in case someone hasn't, is that when the swords are shaking to cue that the fury of swipes is about to hit, they are able to move to the left much faster than they move to the right. So, when attacking the swords, I try to stay on the left side of the platform, and then when I see it shaking to prepare for the fury swipes, I run all the way to the right, and then it's unable to move right and doesn't hit me.

If anyone's good with Ness, the sword's energy balls can be absorbed with PSI Magnet.

Anyone got any tips for Rival Smash? Particularly with Diddy Kong. Stupid 3KO rubb. I can get to two if I'm lucky.
01/17/15, 12:45
@Shadowlink

Lots of peanuts. I think that kept the normal dudes at bay and then let them beat up a bit on Diddy Kong Rival. If you can safely go in for a move, hit him. Eventually it should work out in your favor. Just takes a while.
01/17/15, 15:32
On the levels where he changes form, I devote 100% of my attacks to Master Hand. On the ones where they have separate HP, I attack Crazy Hand first.

I generally start with an up smash attack, and try to leap over any sort of charge / finger flick. Only takes a few hits usually before I'm getting my ass stomped by the big guy. I get so stoked when I avoid his huge hand swipe. It happens maybe 30% of the time.
01/17/15, 22:10
Thanks for the advice of attacking Master Hand first. I realized that Kirby is indeed tall enough to him with his up smash and so a few quick ones of those and I can take care of it pretty quick. Didn't have any problems getting past them and the subsequent core forms that I already mastered on 3DS. That said...

FUCK MASTER FORTRESS. FUCK IT WITH THE STRENGTH OF 100 WILD HORSES
01/18/15, 13:56
Ahem. Well I beat it, on Level 8 at least. The trick seems to be to not rush and just take your time killing everything. Maybe I would have figured that out earlier if I wasn't so nervous every time I got to him because I knew I only had one shot on Level 9 and a couple overall. Can't say I'm a big fan of it, but I'm pretty confident I can beat it on 9 pretty soon now that I know what's going on more.
01/18/15, 14:24
@Jargon

YES, take your time through that thing. Something else I've done every time: do the first two areas (before the drop down the hole) and THEN grab your Heart. Unless, of course, you're starting with like 80% or something. I got crushed by that stupid stage far too many times..until I finally beat it with Custom Ike on 9.0. Since then, on 9.0 or 8.0 with Marth or Lucina, I haven't lost (4-0 since Ike, I guess).

Next time you get there, you'll win again.

(Try Custom Marth on 9.0 next. Its a Challenge dealio, so you "gotta do it.")

@Mr_Mustache

What was your custom IKE setup?
01/19/15, 00:45
Yeah, I failed miserably at the Fortress the first couple times, since the rules are so different from the honed skills of normal battles and I had no idea what was going on. After figuring it out though, I now think it's the easiest form. Since there's a heal right before it, I know that if I can make it there, I've got it in the bag.
01/19/15, 23:15
@Mop it up

I keep thinking that too. Then I get nudged by some shambling goop and then I end up pinballing all over an acid filled cavern until I hit 100% damage and explode.

Still haven't quite managed to clear it.

The really frustrating thing is I got up there with 2 lives once, and like you had no idea what I was really doing. I found the third core thingy & wasn't sure where to go next, so I made a blind jump off the edge...into oblivion.

What a waste.

So, did everyone see that you can play a lot more stages on 8 player now? I was playing Classic Mode and got the Mario Circuit stage in a 5+ player match and no Shy Guys drive by. Did some investigating and here's the changes made to allow the new stages:

Mario Circuit – lacks shyguys
Luigi’s Mansion – Can’t be destroyed
Pyrosphere – lacks ridley
Norfair – no lava at all
Lylat Cruise – no ships flying around
Pokémon Stadium 2 – lacks stage transitions
Town and City – All background characters removed
Smashville – All background characters removed (cept petey, he stayed at a slow framerate)
Studio Wii Fit – no mirror background

Cool that they're still working to get more stuff in the game in addition to the stuff we knew about like the Miiverse stage, etc.. Too bad I still haven't had a chance to get try 8 player local.

Also, I beat Classic Mode on Level 9 at long last. Used my boy Captain Falcon. As usual, no customs. I shouldn't have much trouble beating it with Kirby, but I've been trying to use different characters making my way through the Level 7 challenge.
02/10/15, 00:57
@Jargon I heard about that update but have not played since its release. I was wondering if they would show up in Classic.
