Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

@ploot Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's bad and people seem to enjoy the defensive play, just not my preference.

Kris lied to me! And yeah I guess it is a pretty sloppy photoshop.

Hahahaha... you looked so stupid, believing me, too. We were all calling you names behind your back and stuff. It was great.

Seriously, I guess I must have remembered seeing the level for Sonic and mixed it with Smash when I saw the picture. I'm not senile, but my thoughts were more, "Oh, I've seen that before" than, you know, whatever.

@Mop it up

I'm not being that serious, though I do basically dislike fighting games where it's like 70 percent blocking or whatever. I never said to myself as a kid, "You know what Street Fighter 2 needs? More blocking! That's where all the fun is!"

It's been a long time since I played Melee regularly, but it doesn't seem to me like defensive play is particularly more important now. It was always a huge, huge part of being successful at Smash.
01/11/15, 06:38
@Jargon It's always been important for competitive play, but defense is a lot easier here since dodges are so quick and can be used more often. It makes going on the offensive harder.

@Mop it up

When you played Melee, who were you playing against? I wonder if you're just facing a higher level of competition these days. I know I am!

You mean Smash 3DS or the Wii U one in particular? What was the problem? In my experience, both versions run quite well online.

The Wii U version. It was in incredibly laggy, and I actually got disconnected during one of the matches. I was playing against a buddy of mine who I have played online with regularly on 3DS, where we never experienced any issues.

Needless to say, the experience was less than optimal. Disappointing.

@GameDadGrant

In my experience, the 3DS version's online is much worse than the Wii U's. But that's anecdotal. I've only had a couple of great matches on 3DS that were relatively lag-free, but I've had many that were pretty great on Wii U. It could have just been a bad night.
01/11/15, 16:20
@GameDadGrant
Both play online exactly the same for me.

Locally, however...
01/11/15, 16:34
@ludist210

Yeah. Maybe. I've not had this kind of lag on any other Wii U game I've played online, so I know it's not my connection or the console itself. It's just Smash.

Oddly, I've actually had better online experiences with Brawl during last gen. And that one was supposed to be worse...!

@ploot

Yeah, you've had really bad luck with local 3DS play! So strange that such a thing occurs. I've tried replicated that myself, but have been unsuccessful. I have to agree with the original diagnosis: it's a Canada thing.

The only problem I've had playing locally on Wii U is that my kids always want to use the Gamepad. I have two kids. And only one Gamepad. Needless to say, there is a lot of bickering and IRL "fighting" over the controller, LOL!

I've had local lag and even connection drops in the 3DS version. Not sure what the cause was, but I was playing with a buddy one afternoon and it was fine for about half an hour, then suddenly every fight was a slideshow until it eventually dropped entirely.

Online was pretty comparable for both, and both are lightyears better than Brawl ever was because I often have matches that are actually good. Anecdotally, the 3DS version seems to have slowdown for bad connections but little input lag, while slowdown in the Wii U version is rare but input lag is more common when connections aren't good.

@Jargon Yes. I never played tourney rules in Melee but I did play a few people who knew what they were doing and were better than me. The mechanics of the games are different: for one easy example, in Melee you can air dodge only once and then you're disabled; here, you can air dodge an infinite number of times per jump and still attack afterwards, so there's no risk involved with air dodges. And of course, 64 just had shield and roll, and that's it. If I could play those two games online I don't think my win rate would really be different/better, they'd just be more fun.

@GameDadGrant If you're just basing this on a single day's play, that isn't enough to call it. Sometimes bad laggy times happen in any game for one reason or another.

Wow, you're really digging into those challenges, nice work. As for Home Run, I don't know if this is too much of an easy answer, but I always preferred using the character Ganondorf, who simplifies things quite a bit, for those challenges. Big hits equals one far-flying Sandbag!

I'm at 131/140 right now. Busted my 9.0 cherry last night w/ Ike after failing failing FAILING so many times before. Threw 8.0 Lucina at it right after that and breezed through, followed up with 9.0 Marth and ran it as quick as I could. I was doing a "practice run" to see how quickly I could do it so I could try again with Non-Custom 9.0 Marth...and the challenge unlocked! Stupid me, I misread it initially! I'd been trying to beat 9.0 with Normal Marth for a while now.

Now I gotta get through unscathed and/or with a Normal character. I think both of those are going to be TOUGH. Lucina might be my best bet though, with all that time spent on Cruel Smash...

As for Homeruns, yeah, I've been using Ganondorf, but I'm still about 500 ft short on my best attempt. I'm missing.....something. Gotta be! (And I completed 91 of my 92 Trophy Cases. YEAH. I think my last remaining one is tied to the two Challenges I'd satisfy with one longball. Shucks)

@Shadowlink

Oh, weird, completely missed it. Sorry --Guy in Seinfeld who steps on Elaines toe with a cane.

Speaking of, what are Trophy Boxes? I'm just about at 700 trophies, but I don't have any Trophy Boxes. How do I get them?

You get them automatically--just press X while looking at any (well, almost any) of your trophies. It's a neat extra feature.

Oh, on the subject of trophies, anyone else feel there are too many Pokemon? I've actually counted--a whopping sixth of all the trophies in this game are from the Pokemon series. I know it's a popular series, but that really seems excessive to me.

I completely agree. I was just surprised/disappointed since I was playing against a buddy of mine who I had played numerous times with on 3DS with no issues. I was just expecting flawless connectivity with the console version too. And obviously I was let down when that didn't happen.

I'm not about to give up on it, though. Game is too great to abandon it after one bad evening.
01/11/15, 22:10
@Mop it up

I understand the mechanics are different, but it's not like "going on the offensive" was easy in Melee. It required patience, as now.
01/11/15, 23:07
@TriforceBun Ah, thanks, I didn't notice that little button prompt in the corner. I just checked, and it looks like you actually have to view the trophy boxes for them to count in the records. So that's why the stats were showing I had 0, but now after looking at them I have 81.

@Jargon Comparatively easier than in this game, and battles played out differently.

@TriforceBun

I find it easiest to press X while looking at the Smash Bag (Punching Bag?) trophy. That trophy is in Case #1.

And "yes," T-Bun -- WAY too many Pokemon trophies, though I'm sure many Pokephiles would disagree.

--Have you guys (or anyone) cleared the 3280 Homerun mission? Can it realistically be done Solo??
01/12/15, 03:20
@Mr_Mustache

Is that the Ganondorf one? (It's 1000M here. Hurrah for Metric!)

I did it a couple of weeks ago when I was on holidays. Its not imposible, just lay as much smack as you can (pushing 150% damage is good) and try to hit the bag with the tip of the bat.

I'll trade you. You come beat Classic and All-Star with all the characters for me, I'll do Ganondorf for you .

(What a griiiiind)

@Mr_Mustache

I'll give you a hint: G-dorf's forward-tilt works nicely in linking to itself.
