Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Took my Yoshi amiibo over to a friend's house and it turned out he was our 8th player rounding out an 8-player smash fest. Everyone was skeptical to include him because he's "just a computer player" etc etc, but I reassured them that my Yoshi had learned from me and plays similarly to my style. They were pretty amazed at his skill and un-CPU-like behaviour. Some even wanted to partner with him for 2v2v2v2. It was a good old time all around.

The other night was the first time I didn't see anyone on my list playing this game. I guess the fever is over.

@Shadowlink What strategy were you trying?
01/05/15, 21:53
I've been occupied by conquering Disney Infinity lately...I'll be back. Soon.

Well, wait. School resumes tonight. Crap...

@Mop it up

The whole hide under the right edge & Up+B to the ledge thing. Rinse and repeat.

I did mix it up a bit with some ledge recovery attacks & a throw or two, but that stuff is pretty risky.
01/05/15, 22:41
@Shadowlink Sounds dangerous. The method that worked for me was to spam dodges against the edge, and grab and throw over the Miis when they come near. They're so bad at recovery that they don't make it back. That's something else you can try.
01/05/15, 22:45
@Mop it up

I could give it a whirl, but honestly if they're smacking me up when I'm hanging from a goddamn ledge, I don't like my chances of dodging everything they throw at me normally.

I'm still spewing at that 7 run.

I've been away from my Wii U for almost 2 weeks, but I'm ready to get back into it. Come to think of it, I don't think we've sparred yet. When are you available?
01/05/15, 23:53
@anon_mastermind Probably some evening or night. I don't think we have crossed paths yet, but, I only join 4-player matches with items on, so we'd have to get a couple other people on board also.
01/06/15, 23:13
@anon_mastermind@Mop it up

I'd be on board if you guys are free Friday/Saturday nights.I've barely played anyone here. And after a nice vacation plowing my way through the single player challenges, I'd love the chance to test my Link skills.

It's annoying, I keep checking 'online' mode, and usually see 3 or 4 people from my list who are 'online', but I can't join? What does that mean? That they're just playing random online battles or something, no room? How does the messaging system work? I thought I sent a Miiverse message to Jargon when I first got the game and he was on, but there was no indication he got it.

There's no way to do stock matches against random people online?

Finally tried For Fun online and it was pretty damn good except for some people playing really cheaply/annoying.
Few people were basically just hiding, spamming strong moves or smashes from good vantage points, and even "stealing" several of my KOs. I'd see this one person spam Dedede's side and up specials, getting KOs with that shit on players I did vast majority damage to. I was juggling guys for like 30 seconds straight and they would just come steal the KO with some spammed shit.

Can't stand people who play cheap just to win. I guess the one cool thing is only wins are recorded in For Fun.

For Fun has made me appreciate all stages more though. Gaur Plains is a lot better than I thought, and same goes for Punchout.
Pyrosphere is pretty awful unless done in FD mode. Ridley ruins that stage.

@carlosrox
I genuinely feel there's no way to be "cheap" in this game. All spamming can be countered.

Also, you should let others in on your games sometimes. I've tried to join yours a few times and have never been welcomed. BOOO!

And yeah, Pyrosphere is pretty darn awful. It's too bad that Ridley actually takes away from the stage.

I prefer teamplay. Funner. We should do a match this weekend.

I'm down to whup Shadowlink's Shadow Link with my Shadow Link.

I tried to join Pauloot yesterday but chickened out after I though I was interrupting a 1v1 of his...

Not being able to spectate the match in progress or have any indication how long you have to wait is idiotic as well.

And speaking of idiotic, @Shadowlink: the messages are tied to Miiverse only and there's no way of knowing if someone's seen your message or not. Wii U really should have a better message/friend system. It's completely unintuitive. Don't bother with it. There's no way to communicate anything or create private games or any of that.

Also, when someone joins your game with CPU in it, it'll auto kick the CPU and ruin the match if CPU is what you want. Me and my brother like to play online team against CPU and whenever someone asks to join, the CPU is removed. This is especially annoying when the match is all ready ready to go, you decline the persons request, and one CPU is gone. And since the game apparently randomly decides who can set the rules, you're forced to start the match and quit just to fix it. Very lame.

@carlosrox

Bah. What are you doing Nintendo? Why is this so hard?!

In more positive news, finally did the cruel smash challenge with Lucina. Yes! Only took me like 5 hours of trying.

I poked around a bit more online, turns out I wasn't jumping quite correctly. You need to straighten up before you go into your B-Aerial. Its more likely to push the CPU off the stage, instead of the agonizing chip damage strategy in the video in this thread. Did it in about 3 mins.
01/08/15, 21:42
@carlosrox It isn't random, control of the rules is given to whichever human player comes in last, or has the lowest score.

@ploot Not in my experience, spamming is often the key to victory (especially dodges). Heck, I've even seen it in games you took part in, but I guess you didn't notice. The lack of downtime and hit-stun in this game basically encourages spamming.
01/08/15, 22:00
Aw sorry Ploot, didn't mean to be a dick. Nothing personal :)

I decline most just because me and my bro prefer playing high level CPU when we play. We can be insular :)

But I'd like to play some NW games as well, and I have, but not that many. It usually runs like crap too which is a huge turn off. Also, if it isn't 2 of you, it'll be 2v1 or you'll be paired with a CPU.
01/08/15, 23:34
@Mop it up
Are you positive this is the case?

Either way, not that great of a setup IMO. The CPU auto kick thing is an issue no matter who's in control, because if someone joins after you hit READY, it can't be undone. Really stupid.
01/08/15, 23:37
@carlosrox Yup, it's always worked that way when I have played. The only thing I'm unsure of is what happens if there is a tie for last place/lowest score. I'm not sure how it determines who gets control in that case.

If you're playing team 2v2 vs the CPU then you might tie your score a lot with your partner, which may make it seem random who gets control.

I don't like it one bit. What if someone changes the rules to something ridiculous like 50 stock? I let one guy in me and my bro's room and he went and changed everything to like 10 stock. Just utterly obnoxious.

And it doesn't even tell you what changes have been made, beyond the mode change (I think). Dunno why they can't do simple vote or something. Who wants stock, time, items on or off, etc. And I like most stages and all omega stages. Being blocked out from Omega or Items in either mode with strangers is too large of a segregation. Sigh.

Playlists would be much appreciated.
01/09/15, 00:03
@carlosrox

Most four player matches I've played have been relatively smooth. Ploot, Bun, myself, and someone else (Nate? Kenny?) played four-player matches one night and it was an absolute blast with little lag (if any).
01/09/15, 00:38
@carlosrox

I think it's great (as dicussed in the items thread). Yea, I guess if you play with random people they can mess things up, but that is the case in all aspects of the game. Just play with people you trust not to do so.
