Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

@Mop it up

I have a handful that I consistently use (maybe a dozen), but I'm not really a "master" of any of them (aside from Kirby). However, I got skunked in the 3DS tournament of champions, so I'm probably not the right person to answer this question...

My mains: Kirby, Peach, Link, Zelda, Zero Suit Samus, Luigi, Pac-Man, Lucina, Ness, and R.O.B. Occasionally Mr. Game & Watch and Wario, with some Mega Man and Palutena thrown in for good measure.

Well my local Gametraders is all sold out of Smash and the adapter. Might have to go around and try a bunch of different stores. Oh how I wish I could drive right now.

You won't find the adapter.

EB sold out of their preorder bundles at least a week before Launch, and I found a site that detailed which retailers may have still had stock. I think only Target was left, but they'd bound to be snapped up by now.

I was about to say your best option is to snag the game and then order the adapter direct from Nintendo...

But I just found this:

Jesus Christ. I'm glad I ordered mine when I did.

I've been using Random when playing with people lately.

It keeps things fresh for me since the roster's so huge, plus it let's me try out characters I otherwise would have never touched (i.e. Greninja).

For the most part it works out, though there are still a few characters that I absolutely fail at recovering with. Two of the big one's being Greninja and Diddy, heh.

I'm actually curious, do people just practice over and over with the same character to get good, or do people like to use a wide variety? Or are some people just naturally talented at this game for whatever reason?

Possibly a bit of both.

For both N64 Smash and Melee, I picked a character from the start and then stuck with it. Not sure if they just happened to naturally fit my playstyle or if I just molded my style around the character

I got lucky on N64 Smash, I went with Pikachu. Who is almost univerally regarded as *the* top tier character for that game. All I knew was that he was small, fast, hard to hit, and once I mastered the double quick attack, ridiculously difficult to KO. And his attacks did pretty sweet damage.

Pikachu got nerfed a bit in Melee and felt a little off to me, so I gave Link a whirl. I know I got better with him as time went on, That last (second last?) Event match against Crazy & Master Hand...rolling, attacking, air dodging...every move executed on pure instinct. Immensley satisfying when I finally beat that stage.

Stuck with Link again in Brawl, but branched out a bit to try some of the other characters. Used Pit as a solid secondary, but I never really got into the other charachters.

Again I'm maining with Link for this installment, but I'm actually pretty taken with Kirby this time too. I'm not sure why.

@kgtennispro

If Peach isn't one of your mains, then I am truly terrified of ever playing you again. Maybe you could pour orange juice over your eyes before we play next time to level the playing field.

Apparently this is the Japan tier list. I used to use Diddy in Brawl but I have no idea why he is supposed to be that good. I just liked that I could troll people CHICAGO STYLE with his banana peels. But now he can only throw one at a time? Blah.

Most of the characters I use are Ds and Fs. LOL.

Not that I ever play 1v1 with no items, but that tier list is nothing like what I've been seeing online. A lot of people use the characters in the E and D tiers and fare really well with them. I also think Shulk feels top-tier, I find him tough to hit even in the hands of people who have no idea what they are doing.

Meanwhile, the Diddys, Yoshis, and Villagers I've come across usually did horribly.

@Zero

Pit and Dark Pit on different tiers. Clone theory debunked.

12/05/14, 00:54
I usually prefer C-level characters. Hmm...
12/05/14, 01:09
@Mop it up Yeah but don't the tiers only really apply to uber advanced players anyway? I feel like they have no real relevance to norms.

I'm only saying this because I vaguely remember Olimar being ranked pretty high in Brawl? And like no normal person I know had any idea how to not suck with him.
12/05/14, 01:20
I don't trust any tier list that exists this soon after the game's release, especially since we're, what, two weeks after the rebalancing patch?

Not buyin' it!
12/05/14, 01:22
These rankings change over time anyway. People are still figuring out how to use characters in Melee effectively and the game's been out for close to 15 years.

I am surprised to see Shulk that low though, he does seem to be the one guy who has given me a lot of trouble and is more powerful than I expected.
12/05/14, 01:23
@Zero Olimar only became higher tier more recently, pretty sure he was low tier for a long time. Probably because nobody knew how to use him.
12/05/14, 01:24
@Zero

I think it sorta depends. A great player can beat a lousy player with anyone. But I'd guess medium-level, vanilla players where one person is playing an S and the other is playing an E... I could see it being like a handicap.

Even so, I'll always be a lousy player who only plays for the heck of it. So I'm sticking with Palutena, even if everyone says she sucks. What do I care?
12/05/14, 01:37
Diddy's S-tier because his up-air attack can KO people at a fairly low percentage, and he has a simple combo into it:

Banana throw --> Grab --> Down Throw --> Jump into up air

Not something you'll see the average joe using online, but when it comes to competitive play, it's a ridiculously OP set up which is why Diddy's jumped up to the highest tier of his own.

Relevant to this discussion...check out the cool graphs that show how characters got shuffled through the ranks over the years for Melee and Brawl.
12/05/14, 01:46
@kriswright

For what it's worth Kirby has been considered low rank ever since Melee it seems but I've stuck with him and when I do play really competitive players, which isn't often, I can at least hold my own. Part of it is probably because people aren't used to fighting Kirby. Maybe I could actually win more if I switched to some boring "superior" character, but what's the fun in that?

I say stick with Paulatena and with enough practice you'll be just fine.
12/05/14, 01:46
Meanwhile, apparently the internet learned of a little trick I want to try out... hehehe
12/05/14, 01:51
Anyone down to play some tonight?
12/05/14, 03:41
I'm down for a couple. I'll be on the Gamepad and can't chat right now though.
