Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

The Ridley-man! Sakurai's "too big" comments be darned.

To clarify about the roster, I feel like Melee and 3DS/WiiU had too many puffy clones that padded out the roster, while Brawl's group lacked the filler. Of course, we've been around this clone argument again and again so I won't delve too deep into that.

@TriforceBun

Ridley as he exists in Wii U Smash (is there a better way to refer to these games?) is pretty great, though. The comments about him being too big are ridiculous, of course, as so many of these characters have been different sizes over the years.

If forced to pick a "mainstream" Nintendo character to be playable that currently is not, I'd pick Toad, of course. I think that Professor Hector and Balloon Fighter could be awesome characters, but I expect we'll never see either.

Duck Hunt is the most annoying character to play against, bar none. Stay away from him, unless you want me to hate you, or course

@Kal-El814 I just call it "Sm4sh" since it's the fourth Smash game. If you want to differentiate between the Wii U and 3DS ones, then I guess I'd go with "SmUsh" and "Sm3sh."

I think there's always room for more fighters in the next one--I'm personally a fan of new (unrepresented) franchises, even if they're kinda smaller ones (like Melee's Ice Climbers, Brawl's ROB, and SSB4's Duck Hunt). NES obscura alone could make for all sorts of crazy fighters, not to mention newer, smaller titles like Pushmo.

We are pretty overdue for a Wars rep at this point though...

Chibi-Robo for Smash!

Also Kyle Hyde and Ashley Mizuki Robbins, obviously.

I thought it would be cool to see Bayonetta, but I thought she'd be too risque. This was until I saw Zero Suit Samus' bikini costumes, and Bayonetta is more clothed than that most of the time. Let's get it done.

'SmUsh' makes me lol
12/02/14, 22:44
I, too, like SmUsh.

Myself, I no longer care about more games being represented, as the novelty of Nintendo worlds colliding wore off long ago. Instead, now I want to go in the opposite direction; I'd love to see some franchise-specific versions of Smash, specifically Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon. These franchises each have a load of characters that I think would be fun tossed into the Smash ring, none of which really have a chance of making the cut in the regular game. I don't think Sakurai would need to be involved in these side games, as the template is already well established at this point. Just make Mario characters with Mario-themed stages, items, and game modes, and boom, it's a game.

@Mop it up

I'd just like more Smash Bros-esque games, period. I wouldn't necessarily need to see franchise-specific ones that are already repped in Smash, but I'd love to see something like, say, Disney/Pixar Smash.

You're right in that the initial appeal of the series ("Who'd win in a fight, Mario or Link!?") has kinda worn off since after the N64 game, but now it's more about how much Nintendo fan-service can be crammed in, and the competitive scene.
12/03/14, 02:31
I want to see an Adventure/RPG type game utilise the concept.

Captain N that shit up. Save Videoland!
12/03/14, 02:35
@TriforceBun "Fan service" and "competitive scene" are two things I've never cared about.

There was that TMNT game called Smash-Up or something, but it wasn't that good. I haven't tried Sony's version, All-Stars Battle Royale or whatever, but it doesn't have the characters I'd have wanted like Spyro and Crash.
12/03/14, 02:36
@Mop it up

If you want to see certain characters or Mario-themed stages, items, etc. then it sounds to me like you care about fan service.
12/03/14, 02:56
@Jargon

Yeah but that's Mario fan service.

*waves dismissively*
12/03/14, 03:04
@Jargon Hm, I guess I'm not clear on what "fan service" means. And it would appear the definition changes a bit depending on who says it. So I'll clarify: If "fan service" is just the concept of mashing together different games, or means references, trophies, music, game demos, etc. then I don't care about that stuff.

SmUsh FOREVER

@anon_mastermind

I just love the way he looks. Playing as a puppy is so much fun!

I'm pretty sure the LAN adapter is slower than my wifi. I'm pretty positive the USB bottlenecks it to a point that's actually slower than wifi. I was hoping it would reduce latency but even that is higher than on wifi (or around the same). I just played on wifi and it was probably about the same or better than with the LAN adapter. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Also, I see fan service as the developer going "Oh man, it would be a real treat to the fans if we did _____________." Hyrule Warriors and Smash are both great examples of fan service games, because it shows all of our favorite things doing amazing stuff. Stuff that's a nod to the fans like "We know you like this, so here you go." The return of the raccoon suit in NSMB2 could probably be seen as fan service as well.

Something like a Mario fighting game could be fan service, because it would basically be filled with stuff from Mario's past, and unlikely to bring anything new in terms of characters or lore or what have you. Like, if Fawful just showed up somewhere, I'd consider that to be fan service.

A Mario game without as much fan service could probably be something like Super Mario Sunshine, which introduces a whole new world with new characters and relies less on past games certain things. The controls are basically the same as Mario 64, but the context of the game is very new. The return of Yoshi could be seen as fan service though, because he was absent for a really long time. One could see that as the developers recognize that people missed Yoshi in Mario 64, so they put him in the next game (however terribly).

@PogueSquadron

My Wii U is definitely faster with the USB. Remember that a wired connection isn't just about speed, it's also about reducing interference that can cause latency.

Honestly, your constant exasperation with input lag, whether caused by an HDTV or online, makes me wonder if it's all in your head.
