@Jargon

Correct. This is actually one of the reasons I'm getting a New 3DS at launch.

@r_hjort

You'll eventually get the 3DS version though, yeah? I mean, I assume you will want to take advantage of the connectivity between the two versions. Plus, it'll be awesome. Don't deny yourself of awesomeness.

I doubt I will. I mean, sure, if I had tons of money I'd probably buy every game worth having in every version imaginable, but right now I don't think it's in the cards. There are quite a few 3DS games I need to finish before getting a new one, and there are even more that I want to get before I get Smash. Besides, as much as I like the circle pad I didn't like the feel of it when smashing and dashing around.

..............

Please see me after class. 1v1, no items, Final Destination.

So no Miiverse for the 3DS version is confirmed then? It's not just the demo, or a way to keep secrets from the Japanese release under wraps before the worldwide launch? That sucks.

Part of me still says waiting for the Wii U version is the right move. If it arrives November 21st as rumored, I may just put the $45 I would have paid for the 3DS version towards the Gamecube adapter bundle.

@nate38

It's not completely unavailable - it's usable on the New 3DS.

It's interesting to see people's attraction to the Wii U version, when we know next to nothing about it. Other than the roster, anyway.

It looks and sounds better than the previous (incredible) versions of Smash Bros, and you can use GCN controllers to boot. What's not to love?

@GameDadGrant I have no plans to upgrade my launch 3DS, much as I'd enjoy the added comforts of the revised versions.

As for the Wii U version, I know I can play it on the most comfortable controller ever, and with a wired online connection, and with three friends who don't own 3DS systems, and I can post silly pictures on Miiverse that will make me famous. The games are largely identical, and most of the coverage focused on the Wii U version until a couple months before the 3DS version launched anyway. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into.

Yeah, it makes sense.

I've played Smash with a GCN controller since Melee, and it feels so right.
It's kind of like why people pay for arcade controllers to play fighters. It's the best control scheme.
Also, in order to play multi with people, including my wife, only one copy of the game is needed.

That said, I'm reallllly playing with the idea of buying two copies of Smash 3DS so Trish and I can play.
We've been having a blast beating up Level 9 computer characters in the demo.

@GameDadGrant
It shouldn't be surprising that people aren't as excited about the 3DS version. First off, many people don't enjoy playing on handhelds as much as consoles. Secondly, the 3DS version most likely will have less content, and the Wii U has a better controller for Smash Bros. The 3DS version is going to sell to the hardcore Smash fans like you and me, who will end up picking up both versions. And people who don't want to buy a Wii U.

I, personally, am looking forward to it. It's going to be great playing Smash Bros on the go, and I'll get to learn all the ins and outs of each character then bring my skills to the table on the Wii U version when I play with buddies. Can't wait for October 3rd.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I think Smash on 3DS will be fantastic, but I don't think it will be the version for me.

@TriforceBun

I may have figured it out, actually. I think people are more intrigued by the fact that we know less about that version, and so the speculation is far more intriguing. It's not the stuff we DO know. It's what we DON'T that's interesting.

@nate38

We don't know that much. Unique modes, stages, features, etc. But I think some are just thinking it'll be Super Smash Bros. with new characters and in HD. But like I said above, the Wii U version is probably more interesting now because we don't have as much information right now. The unknown is more intriguing than the known.

@ploot

Is it strange that I didn't use the WaveBird to play Brawl? I used the Classic Controller almost from the beginning, and I never looked back. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm more proficient with the CC than I am with a GCN pad.

@anon_mastermind

Eh, I think more people enjoy playing handhelds over consoles than you think. The sales numbers alone pretty much prove that. The Wii U version will be great, I don't want anyone to think I'm not saying that. And let's not discount how much content actually IS in the 3DS version, and the unique features it will have, even over the Wii U build.

@r_hjort

Yeah, it's cool. Gotta go with what you like - I can totally dig that. I haven't mentioned it much here (yet) because everyone will think I'm crazy, but I may not get the Wii U version, whenever that ends up being available. I'm not really sure what the console version is going to be able to offer me that will justify me putting down the 3DS version.

It's still gonna be a great game though, either way. I don't think anyone is going to say otherwise.

Yeah, I've been reconsidering getting the 3DS version, and the demo has only fueled that. I've read up on all the details from the Japanese version, and it looks like a pretty basic version of Smash Bros with not much in it. Another issue is that the control options for the 3DS version are pretty limited, and I wouldn't be able to create the control style I want. There's still a big unknown though with how it will interact with the Wii U version, and who knows, maybe even that game is basic too. It at least seems like a good idea to wait and see the details of it before committing to the 3DS game.

@nate38 That's sounding like a good idea, maybe I'll do the same.

It's unfortunate that the 3DS couldn't get its own unique entry in the series instead of what will likely be a lessor version of the console game.

I've been hearing the exact opposite--that the game is crammed with stuff to do and unlock. Tons of trophies, a healthy number of modes, a large roster, and apparently it'll take a long, long time to get all custom moves (which helps replay even further). It looks to be the second-most-crammed Smash Bros yet (behind Brawl), which is really solid for a handheld game. Check this review out for more info.

I still can't wait for this pair. There's no chance I'll miss out on either version.
09/19/14, 22:00
@TriforceBun It's basic by Smash Bros standards. I'm not impressed with any of that, and if the Wii U game has all that plus more minus Smash Run (which doesn't look very interesting to me without online multiplayer), then yeah, better to wait and see what's in the Wii U game and how they interact.

...Which is ridiculously jam-packed by any other game's standards. But I see your point.

@TriforceBun I think that was true in 2001 but most games these days have a good amount of content in them, especially when we're talking about playable content. The online mode especially looks basic compared to other online games. Stuff like trophies are basically just acheesements, which nearly every game has now, so it doesn't seem special to me like it did back in 2001.

I can see the appeal of a portable Smash Brothers whether it's unique or not, but myself, I pretty much only play games at home so I don't need to settle for a lessor version of a game. But I'm not writing off the 3DS game completely, I just want to know more about what's in the Wii U game and how the two interact. I currently have a pre-order in place for $3 off plus no tax and free shipping, but I'll probably cancel it and wait for a better deal. With the holidays coming up, I could probably find one pretty soon.

@GameDadGrant There's no need to laugh at me for being level-headed.

@GameDadGrant It just looked a bit trollish to me. If I've annoyed you in some way, then I apologise.

@Mop it up

No, it's nothing like that. I honestly thought you were being funny. This was the conversation I saw:

Triforcebun: "The 3DS game is full of modes and features and tons of stuff! It's loaded more than most other games out there, and it's incredible they stuffed it all into a handheld! Read this amazing review! Excite!"

Mop It Up: "Meh."

It just struck me as funny. So...it turns out you were being serious? Huh. Well, never mind, I guess! My apologies if I offended you, I (obviously) misread/misunderstood your post. My mistake.
