As of right now, I have the physical copy pre-ordered. But, I'm still not sure if I'll just buy the digital copy at the last minute and put the money I have on Gamestop towards something else.
I was leaning toward physical, but since I don't have it preordered yet, I think I'll go the digital route. Having it on hand at all times will be super swell - especially for a game I foresee playing for days, months, years... When Animal Crossing released, I waffled over which version to get. Having the digital version for a game that I've put close to 300hrs into was definitely the right call.
Well, having tried the demo, it works on my broken 3DS to an extent. The broken X makes it so I can't jump with either X or Y, which is a bummer. I can still jump by tapping up, but I usually turn that off because it messes with my directional attacks. The question is whether, once I have the option to customize controls, I can set X off or to something trivial and then it won't be an issue at all. No way to really know until I have the game and of course I'll have made my choice between physical and digital by then. Ugh.
My poor battered 3DS had already practically convinced me to temporarily abstain until I got the new XL next year. But I’m still having second thoughts overall.
For starters I’m not enamoured with the screen. When it’s zoomed out as Smash tends to get, it’s a little hard to tell what’s going on. That will probably be ameliorated somewhat by the XL screen, but the second (and more pertinent issue) is the controls. God I hate the diamond. First thing I’m doing when the WiiU version hits is getting that Gamecube adapter thingy. GC or bust.
I *may* get it down the track. May. But by then I think I might have had my Smash fill with the WiiU version.
So Y doesn't work either...? Might be time to get a new 3DS, bud. Just make sure you don't break its stick with Smash Bros like a few JPN players have done already...
In defense of the diamond, I think when we can customize controls and put B-A on Y-B, things will feel a LOT better. It's how the N64 game controlled, after all! No idea why Nintendo is so married to the kind of awful B-A setup on the SNES layout.
I'm all digital for Wii U, but still doing physical cartridges for 3DS. My 3DS case has slots for three cartridges (plus the one in the system) so I'll just adjust the rotation.
Eventually I'll upgrade my SD card to 32 gb (which I believe is the system limit) and go digital on 3DS, but right now I only have a 4 gb card in there. I have a 2 tb external drive hooked up to the Wii U, so it's all downloads there.
