I got it for the 3DS since I'm always looking for a game to play on that system. I'm a bit backlogged on my Wii U. I love the 3D aspect as I do with pretty much all 3DS games. But I wish I got it for the Wii U because the game is killing my hands. I don't normally have this problem, but I guess this game really takes a toll.
@Hinph I don't think it will take much luck for this game to be a hit. 300k+ on a Kickstarter, tons of press attention, reviewing very well... it's pretty much a shoe-in for "success". I am a bit surprised that they launched PC / Nintendo only, to be honest. Seems like the type of game that would be on everything.
In the 3DS version there's a guy in a village who trades play coins for gold. What does he do in the Wii U version, I wonder. Also, what is the Street Pass colosseum on Wii U?
These results make me sad, I wish NA was more like JPN and handhelds were more popular, I'm worried that the 3DS/Vita gen my be the last gasp of dedicated handheld gaming before it's all smartphones and tablets.
@GameDadGrant I've got a bad feeling, not even Nintendo fans like handhelds any more, this doesn't bode well. Consoles are still popular, tablets are insanely popular, especially for kids, but handhelds... it's basically only Nintendo fans, and most of those bought a 3DS begrudgingly because of the exclusive games, but they'd much rather have all those games on the Wii U so the 3DS could just go away.
@DrFinkelstein But wouldn't that apply to ever game? The controls and small screen are inferior, so every game is better on console, no reason to play handheld at all?
Of course there are plenty of reasons to play handhelds, but those aren't a factor to most people, number one being portability. No one factors in that having Shovel Night with you at all times to play in locations outside of home is awesome, probably because most people live in cities with cars and don't commute or have any reason to carry around a game machine.
Just saying, if every game is better on system A, why play games on system B at all? I think that's the logic of most people and why handheld sales are declining. 3DS selling less than the DS, Vita selling less than the PSP, even though both of those systems are arguably better than their predecessors.
It really depends on the games. There's plenty of games I'd prefer on a handheld. Same as there's games I prefer on a console. Shovel Knight just happened to have features that interested me more on the Wii U than it did on the 3DS.
