Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.5)  by
So, there is a new 3DS game coming out in 2015 called Code Name S.T.E.A.M. This is the thread to talk about it. Although, we don't know much about it, other than it's turn-based strategy with some action elements in it. Also, it's being developed by the good people at Intelligent Systems, so we know it'll be good. Right? Right. Probably.

In any case...Code Name S.T.E.A.M. everybody! Who is interested in this new IP from Nintendo? Let's discuss some strategy stuff!

So far I've bought Octodad, BattleBlock Theater, and Saints Row 4. Probably pick up a couple more before the sale ends.

Wait, wrong thread...

So yeah, Project STEAM. Um...I think this game will be a good game.

I'm pretty hyped for it myself.
I love the fact that Nintendo is pushing some new IPs this/next year.

Loved Valkyria Chronicles and anyone who played that should definitely enjoy the combat in this game. Seems very similar with a few extra nice touches that should make combat great. Can't wait for it

The gameplay that was streamed during E3 won me over. I like the character designs, and I was getting good vibes from the game mechanics. I'm looking forward to this one.

This announcement was pretty exciting to me. I mean, I'm sure that I'll buy it and not open it, like all other strategy games, but Silver Age comic books!

@nate38
I finally started playing though the 360 version of Battleblock Theater. It's pretty awesome. The opening cutscene was genuinely funny, too.

I loved Valkyria Chronicles too.

Not sure about the character design, but I'm sure this will be amazing.

Releasing March 13, 2015! As confirmed by the video game awards show!

Color me surprised. I didn't think we'd get this so early next year.

Demo available on the shop now! Woo!

Played a few levels of the demo, and it's really cool. Last mission I played (not sure how many more I've got) I almost got one of my characters killed when I stopped paying attention to what was going on around me. The mix of looking around the environments in real-time third person and the turn based battles is sweet. There seems to be more stuff to collect and explore around the levels too.

Oooooh, I will be grabbin' the demo. Quite curious if I'll dig the gameplay.

Wow, there's a lot of reliance on the camera. I've been mostly using abxy, but it isn't ideal for minute movements. I lost a level because I didn't quite understand the overwatch ability. But it was actually pretty simple. It reminded me of that launch strategy game, Ghost Recon. Totally overlooked and should be checked out by any strategy fan.

OK, now I've played all the levels the demo has to offer, and I'm really impressed! The last level with those grenade chucking bastards really switched things up a bit for me; I used to like using my overwatch abilities to finish off aliens, but in that cramped space it just tended to notify others of where I was hiding, and then I got a grenade in the face from the railings above.

Now I've been replaying the first three levels to find all the hidden gears and try to reach the goal in the ideal amount of turns, but that's turned out to be more challenging than I expected. Tons of fun, though! I think I'm enjoying the game even more now that I can go back with new characters and experiment a bit.

Played the first couple of levels last night and really enjoyed it. Probably enjoy it more with a second stick, and having my brain remember that L is SHOOT and not some weird attempt at zooming my gun in like a TPS...

I was looking around the eShop today and noticed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is on sale for $7.50 in the NA shop. If you liked Codename Steam I think this would also be a good game to play. I quite liked it and it plays similarly to STEAM.

@gojira
I ate that game up. Loved working with such a small team, each with unique skills.

I will prolly love STEAM too, I just can't fit the demo onto my 3DS right now.

Wow I didn't realize there was a demo! Need to try it!

Things I like:
- the character design and voice acting
- the art style
- the music
- the gameplay (movement and shooting)

Things I don't like:
- waiting so long for enemies to move during their turn
- not being able to see the whole map or at least a top-down view of the map (half the time while the enemy is moving there is absolutely nothing going on on screen)
- generic-looking enemies

I like what I've played so far, and I think it will be better on n3DS with the 2nd stick, but I'm not fully engaged. I think it's to do with the long down-time between turns. Usually this doesn't get to me (in Fire Emblem for example) but here it's just so slow, and you can't see anything most of the time. Maybe it will get better once I have more characters in the field, thus more perspectives to check out. I think it will also enhance the gmaplay during turns because I can see it getting very strategic and I like that the characters have different abilities and strategies for success.

@anon_mastermind

I'd love an overview map too, but that's not what the game is designed for. You're supposed to be playing from your characters POV. That's why they have higher vantages for characters to go to. You're supposed to be playing with that in mind. That's why your characters are always pointing out enemies when they see them.

But yeah, the wait while the enemies move is crazy.

I love how polished the presentation is, but... seriously what is the deal with those enemy turns? The whole game grinds to a hault watching that progress meter move every so slowly.
02/05/15, 22:39
I agree with you guys about the waiting during enemy turns, or at least for the most part. They're really tedious, but when shit is going down, or I suspect enemies are nearby and ready to pounce I think it's kind of exciting to sit through the enemy turns. Switching between my characters, looking around, listening for noises nearby -- I really like that stuff! Too bad those situations are vastly outnumbered by turns when nothing seems to happen and you just want to start dishing out orders again.
