Splatoon on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 33 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Splatoon on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

I stand by that comment.

@TriforceBun Yeah, the story there is that the company who licenced out the matchmaking technology to Nintendo was bought up by a new company, and the new company no longer wanted to licence out the tech. Nintendo's games are not the only ones that lost their online around that time, a bunch of PC games still using it also went down.

The Nintendo Network for Wii U and 3DS appears to be something Nintendo made from the ground up, so I don't think they are licencing any tech for it. Nothing I've heard about at least. I think the online for Wii and DS would have lasted longer if not for the licencing issue, though how much longer is tough to say. Games probably would have been disabled one-by-one over time, probably starting with older titles. I mean, there were some online games that were out for like 2 years before they got shut down.

I'm not worried though, I'm sure by the time Splatoon loses its online, a sequel will be out and about.

This is my first Splatfest. I made it to Pizza Champion. It'll take 100 more points to get to the next level. Is that the last level? Is there any reason to raise my level other than pride? Does what I've already done get me anything that will stick around after today?

@Jargon

The last one is "(your vote) King," and you'll get some extra Sea Snails once the Splatfest is over. Whether those are worth it or not is up to you!

@TriforceBun

What are Sea Snails?

Also just saw this:

Either way, I'd bet dollars to donuts that the NX will have a Splatoon of its own.

I'm sure you're right but it will be interesting to see how the controller works with it assuming it won't be quite like the Gamepad. The Gamepad seems pretty perfect.

This is the first Splatfest that I can't participate in. Go, Team Pizza!

@Jargon

Yeah. The accuracy of the GamePad controls really elevates the gameplay in my opinion. I can't imagine a sequel to Splatoon not having that method of control even if it isn't on the Wii U.

@Jargon

It's a little complicated, but Sea Snails basically let you change your bonuses on your clothes. You know how you get those different abilities unlocked on your gear? If you talk to Spyke (the street "urchin" in the alley of Inkopolis), he'll change your bonuses for you. It costs 30,000 gold, or if you have a Sea Snail, just one of those. The point of this is so that you can pick the clothes you want but also deck it out in bonuses you'd like too (although they're chosen at random). Oh, they also add a "slot" to your gear if it has less than four total. Your mileage may vary, but I find that after I used the first couple Sea Snails, I was set with my clothes and didn't really need any more Snails. You can get almost thirty per Splatfest depending on how well you do.

I really like the GamePad controls too. If the NX has a pointer-type Wii Remote style of control, I think that'd be a good substitute though. I guess we'll have to see, because I'm sort of half-expecting it to be backwards-compatible with the Wii U regardless, which might mean GamePad support.

Or if the NX really does double as a portable system, then I'd expect the portable to basically act as a GamePad. And really, Splatoon 2 is happening. I don't think Nintendo ever anticipated this level of success for a new IP but they'd be crazy to not follow up on it.

Hmm, I didn't get any sea snails. Is it because I'm not Level 20 yet?
12/12/15, 00:37
@Jargon

When was the splatfest? If you wait too long, you won't get them. Unless I'm mistaken, you have until there's a new poll to vote in.

@Guillaume

It was last weekend. Nintendo said on Twitter I had until today to get them. I logged on and nothing came up about the last Splatfest or sea snails.
12/12/15, 00:40
@Jargon

Were you able to vote for the next Splatfest though? You had to get them before then.

@VofEscaflowne

No, there was no voting booth yet.

Would anyone like to form a squad and squid jump online at 4PM Pacific Time?

I haven't tried teaming up with friends via Squad Battle yet.

@Octorockin

I'll see what I can do though I don't think it's likely. I have to do a lot of holiday prep since I'm traveling this holiday. BUT I will check back if I'm freed up.

Maybe later tonight though if not at 7pm est.

@DrFinkelstein

Cool. No worries if you can't make it. I'll take a look at this thread around the starting time to see if you or anyone else is available to play.

Edit: It's 4PM! Does anyone want to play right now? I'll be around for a few hours, so just holler if you want to play!

Beat the game! That end boss was no joke! Still got some scrolls to find, I'll go back for those sooner or later. For a game that has such a multiplayer focus, I was pretty darn happy with the single player offering. Lots of cool mechanics and few dull moments. The only thing holding me back was my broken Gamepad.

@Octorockin

I saw your message at 4:30 and figured you might not be looking anymore (plus I was planning on beating the game today). As always, the lack of instant messaging on Wii U is a bummer.
12/23/15, 04:44
@Jargon

I'll try again tomorrow at the same time (4PM PST), so check back then if you're free!

And yeah, the single player mode is awesome.
12/23/15, 06:17
Pardon me for bumping this thread again, but I'll be ready to play at 4PM PST if anyone is interested in forming a squad! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for a couple of hours.
12/24/15, 01:54
@Octorockin If you don't mind playing with a n00b who is rubbish at games (meaning you'll likely lose rank points), I could join you.
