Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

@kriswright

I was going to post earlier "I've found a new way to die at a higher rate," and thats by going to where my teammates are, and jumping right into the middle of a crossfire since I can't see my opponents. I managed to die 9 times in one match earlier. 9! So yes, I'm a "guns blazing" guy, too.

Odd, since I liked sniping the S out of people in Nightfire. Snow board, woo!

A lot of fun tonight! I apologize to my teammates, as I was playing very drunk... the new level is a lot of fun, eh?

I despise ranked battle mode so far. It's a chaotic crap shoot. I think I'll stick to turf battles and hope the future modes they introduce are better.

@Hinph

I'm going to go play Ranked Battle for 15 minutes. I'm just guessing thats how long it will be before I get sick of it.

New map is fun? Thats neat. I'll be back later..

I hate how you can't change your load-out without completely backing out of matchmaking... or am I missing something?

New map is really neat. One of my favorites!

Splat Zones is kinda cool, but it's way too brutal for me. I'm the type that doesn't play this game so much for the combat, so having a battle that's that chaotic kinda loses some of the appeal of Splatoon for me. That said, I'll probably dabble in it from time to time.

@deathly_hallows
You're not. That's a weird oversight that I hope they fix in a future update.

@deathly_hallows

Nope, a legitimate complaint there... hopefully they fix it in a later patch.

@Mr_Mustache

That's about how long it took me. Not fun.

Not sure how I feel about ranked battles. Definitely gotta take a whole new approach to it though. It feels like weapon choice will definitely play a bigger role than regular battles.

@VofEscaflowne

Yeah, snipers seem to dominate there.

It's a good mode for the people who like more focus on kills and such, but I think the entire draw to Splatoon for me is that I can be a valuable member of my team without being the most skilled shooter.

@Hinph

Really depends on the maps though and where the location is. I'll play it some more but I doubt it'll be much of a focus for me.

Ah, okay, because I tried the roller and was sucking so I wanted to go back to the splattershot, but I was playing with Carlos and a good group so I didn't want to leave. It worked out though because for the next session I got grouped with Rob for a while which was fun, although were were never on the same team, even after like 8 matches. Guess it's true they try to break up friends when possible.

I rented Kirby and the Rainbow Curse from Gamefly instead of Splatoon, for some reason. All you people who are loving the game need to continue playing it for at least a week or two so I can play Kirby, send it back, and then redeem myself.

So do you get points for splatting other players? Or no?

I thought the answer was no... but it seems like you actually do, I think if you just concentrate on "kills" and don't bother covering much ground you can still score pretty well. Or it seems that way from my experience. I just scored like 900 points in a match (which for me is really good) and all I did is stay in the center and battle.

Also, I really want to keep playing but my battery is dead. Bah.

@Secret_Tunnel
This game will be around for long time, people will definitely be playing it in a week!

@deathly_hallows

If you were in a lot of firefights, you probably inadvertently spread ink anyway, since even misses will get you points. Also, splatting other players makes a moderately-sized blob of your team's ink appear in their place instead. So in that way, kills still net you paint coverage.
06/02/15, 07:55
@TriforceBun
Hmm, yeah, that must be it... either way it makes it so that you can be pretty aggressive if you want and still score well.
06/02/15, 08:07
Yeah, killing members of the other team benefits everybody on yours greatly, as it sends them back to their spawn point and allows you and others to advance your own ink coverage... but your team ultimately wins by having the most ink coverage. I love it, because I'm admittedly not the strongest shooter... never have been, never will be. I can still, however, be the most valuable member on my team in some of the rounds by wisely choosing where/when I paint, balancing fight vs flight properly, and using my special attack at the most ideal moments.

Fun times, we had a full room with 8 NWers

Using a charge shot weapon changes my whole game plan. I feel like it requires a slower play style that is more about holding down your team's territory rather than expanding it. It's challenging, but I'm having fun trying to adapt to it.
06/02/15, 11:05
Oooo, I hope I'll get to play that new level when I log on this afternoon! All this sniper talk surrounding Splat Zones scares me though.
06/02/15, 11:34
@r_hjort

I only played for about 15 minutes with the same general group of people, and there was a sniper that was absolutely dominating my team each time... But, hey, that's a short experience, and maybe he was just especially skilled! I'm going to give the mode more of a shot next time when I don't have any drinks in me, but I doubt I'll ever like it anywhere near as much as I do the turf battles. It seems like a more typical shooter, which isn't really my thing.
06/02/15, 13:05
@Hinph
Yeah, I like the Turf Battles because they don't reward typical shooter behaviour, like camping or sniping. I mean, someone with a charger can do a whole lot of good for their team, and you can definitely hide out in a pool of ink to defend an area, but if one were to rely purely on sitting around somewhere it would do more harm than good.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the other upcoming modes compare to the two we've got right now.
