Splatoon on the Wii U

Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

@Jargon If you reword it to console IPs he has a point. Though Pushmo did make it over to the console eventually.

I'd like some more newness but it is what it is. And after watching recent Capcom and Konami decisions perhaps we should be content that Nintendo is not completely fucking up the future of all of their old IPs like some Japanese publishers are.

@Jargon

Amen. I'm sick of hearing this shit about there being no new Nintendo IPs since Pikmin. It's verifiably untrue.

@Zero

I suppose but considering the resources necessary to make console games and the high expectations for Mario and Zelda staples on consoles, it's understandable that there'd be less there. They still roll out new stuff pretty regularly, with Wii/Mii games and Xenoblade last generation and Splatoon so far this generation.

@kriswright

And of course at the same time there's constant complaints about classic franchises being "dead" just because there hasn't been an entry in a while.

Just finished a slew of great matches with Hinph, Infinity_Wave, and VofEscaflowne. Against VofE, we had a match where my team won with a mere .1% better percentage. Holy crap! We both exclaimed that in the chat. I thought my team was out. One drop made the difference.

Hah, that was awesome! Some brutal rounds... I love how NegativeWorlders dominate the top players list. When I was put against you guys with those other players in the last game, I knew I was done for.

As for new Nintendo IP, yeah, they do release new stuff somewhat frequently, but it's rarely in the sense where it feels like as big of a deal as Splatoon. I think the Smash Bros test is the key. Is this a big enough deal for a character from the game to someday be a Smash fighter, worthy of being pitted against the likes of Mario and Pikachu? That was the case with Xenoblade, and it's certainly the case for Splatoon too!

@deathly_hallows

Totally agree! "Stay fresh" might as well be this game's unofficial motto, because it really stands on its own well. I'd probably be somewhat interested in a "Mario Paintball" or whatever, but I can't help but feel it'd be kinda lame compared to this. More Mushroom Kingdom stuff that we've seen a million times, Mario and co wielding paint guns for no real reason...blah. Very glad they didn't go that route and put their faith in a new, creative series.

@kriswright

There've definitely been a lot of new IPs this gen and last, especially on eShop. To be fair, though, Splatoon feels like the first really big one in awhile, you know? I mean, not to disparage great games like Pushmo, but most new IPs don't quite get the VIP treatment like Mario games do. It's refreshing to see how big Splatoon got, and how willing Nintendo was to market it.

Good games, ploot! I'm still struggling against other players (won about half my matches, which makes me more or less average, I suppose), but having a good time regardless. I'm not too crazy about the arenas that are extra tight like the Warehouse--as a Roller, I prefer to stay out of combat if possible.

@TriforceBun

It's not taking away from Splatoon and the fresh feelings that it evokes to point out that Nintendo creates a lot more new characters than they get credit for.

Pushmo and Dillon are decidedly B-level games but Miis were a huge deal that permeated everything Nintendo and Xenoblade should not be taken lightly either.

I should also point out that I consider overreliance on the Mario brand to be a separate contention and one that I agree with much more.

Yeah, their eShop game characters are likable, but by the Smash Bros Test, they are assist trophy worthy at best.
06/01/15, 04:52
@Hinph

Well by the Smash Bros. test we got three worthy new IPs last generation, which is quite different from the attitude Kris and I are refuting.
06/01/15, 04:59
@Jargon

Yeah, Nintendo seems to take unfair criticism for not releasing enough new IP, because every other publisher relies on their big hitters just as much. With how expensive game development has gotten and the uncertainty of a risky new IP selling, I can't blame any of them... of course we'd get a perfect blend of new and old in an ideal world.

All I can say is Splatoon better sell!

One thing I didn't predict is how much I love these motion controls for fine tuning aiming alongside the analog stick. I was going to shut them off right away, but something made me give them a chance. I actually think I might really like the motion controls in Star Fox now!
06/01/15, 05:21
@Hinph

In Japan it literally sold out for the country. Nintendo issued a statement saying go to the eShop if you can't wait but they're trying to make more copies. So hopefully in the U.S. it's the same thing.

I fell for the motion controls the moment I tried them. Super intuitive. I'm fluid as hell with them.

It feels strange to say this but this game is far more enjoyable than Smash or Mario Kart. Maybe it's because it's new territory instead of something we're already so familiar with but I'm having an absolute blast, both offline and online.
06/01/15, 06:32
UGH. Two seconds left on a battle that was wayyy in our favor and it disconnects! Dumb thing.

Oh well, good games Gui.

EDIT: Now I'm splattin' with Fabien and Ploot! I love these two levels (Urchin and Saltspray)! And my sister-in-law is in on it too, so half the people here are friends of mine.

EDIT 2: Now Rob's here too. Splatoon party!

GEEZ FABZ. KILL ME ENOUGH? :P

@TriforceBun

I laughed so much when we both race for that one spot for control right at the beginning... then you wait for me to come and kraken me Jerk!

But damn these were some fun matches! This game is so full of win.
06/01/15, 07:05
Hahah yeah, I definitely stick to a specific strategy on Saltspray. Wait, are you Fabien? I'm confused. Anyway, fun times!
06/01/15, 07:12
@TriforceBun

Who did you think Fabien was?
06/01/15, 07:13
I dunno, I'm dumb. All the different names! You gave me quite a beating with the Splattershot though...!

I love using that Krak-on Roller in Saltspray! Droppin' beacons, being an annoying Kraken...
06/01/15, 07:25
Man, I stink at this game. It's definitely impacting my session length, too. The designs of everything is pretty offputting, too. Liiiike, the squids look creepy, know what I mean? I think the girl is SLIGHTLY less eery than the boy, but yeah. I dunno.

Single player is alright. Reminds me a lot of Super Mario Galaxy.

EDIT- Hey dudes, don't remember to mark this game in your Database as Owned and Playing! Right up therrrre!

It's Monday morning, welcome to a new working week! Let me know if your night went like this:
- Play Splatoon a little later than you should have.
- Go to bed with your heart still racing.
- Close your eyes but see nothing but colourful splats.
- Try to sleep but only hear the chugging "squid-metal" guitar.
- Splat
- Splat
- Chug
- It's 4am
- My jaw is still clenched.
- Alarm

@TriforceBun
You're ruthless with the Kraken! It's also one of my favourite weapons because it is AWESOME. I just wish I could change my loadouts without leaving the session. I sincerely hope they fix that.

Was Emily your sister-in-law? You were using the same weapon so you are henceforth known as the two paint-rollin' Buns of doom.

@Mr_Mustache
I really like the aesthetic of the game. Please keep trying! Maybe when the "friend team" mode releases you'll have a better time? I'd love to tear some people up with you guys on my team consistently!

@Super_Conzo
All too familiar.

@ploot

Oh, I'm still playing. I just don't have enough gas (for this) for more than too long. I played 3 single player stages tonight, no Amiibo challenges, and just enough multi-player for 1 level. I probably sound like a baby (sorry), but getting SWAMPED is never fun.
