Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

Ah geez, the game gets somewhat less fun after you hit level 10 and start getting matched with a room full of 12-18s. I'd regularly get one kill and seven deaths in those rooms--it's pretty frustrating when you spend almost half of the three minute limit respawning, squid jumping, and getting back to where you were. People are getting pretty ruthless already!

Guess I'd better step up my game...

@TriforceBun

So what you're saying is that you prefer preying on the noobs?

@VofEscaflowne

Well obviously!

While I agree that it can be less fun having to play against someone who is too many levels above you, I think it's starting to get really interesting after level 10 because of all the different load outs people can come at you with. You really have to know how certain weapons work and try to adapt your strategy accordingly on the fly, and that's pretty awesome I think.

It's kind of frustrating missing out on the win bonus now though, 'cause you need so much experience to level up.

I thought I was The Splatoon Chosen One until I started playing with higher level people. Err, nope. Haha.

@VofEscaflowne

It was actually really amusing earlier when we played with that full room of noobs. We were their champions!

Game is super fun. I'm glad I took the ink plunge.

I think my new favorite weapon set is the Krak-on Splat Roller. I think we're at the point where the Rollers aren't seen as OP anymore, so I feel no shame in using this fun, crazy weapon. I'm the type that likes to try to paint vacant areas while everyone else is fighting each other, so the Roller's great for me. And I really like the Squid Beacon and Kraken specials. Really fun!

@TriforceBun

What does the Squid Beacon do?

I still haven't tried the rollers. Doesn't appeal for whatever reason, but maybe I'd like them.

I definitely wouldn't call them overpowered though. They pack a punch if you get in their way, but they have their disadvantages as well.

I just downloaded and started the game, and am a little confused. I thought the Wii remote and nunchuck combo was supported. Is this a GamePad only game? It just seems so perfect for the Wii remote combo. It's going to take me a loooooooooooooong time to get comfortable with the GamePad controls, as I am not a dual analog kind of gamer (especially with motion on top of that). Can anyone help clarify?

Played a bit today, both single and multiplayer. I'm up to level 6 now, and have played some even matches, and some real blood baths. Still fun getting your tentacles handed to you.

Yeah, rollers aren't nearly as OP or overused. This game has me feeling FRESH!

@DrFinkelstein

Squid Beacon places an antenna-like device wherever you are as a secondary "weapon." This gives you (and everyone on your team) an extra area they can warp to. Very handy for retaking turf whenever you want to spawn in a less predictable location, or you have no teammates in a valuable area. I like to put them on the tallest tower in the middle of the north area in Saltspray Rig, for instance. The downsides are that they're destroyed after being warped to and the other team can destroy them with paint, but you can drop and use multiple ones.

Unfortunately, your control options are pretty limited. I think it's just GamePad and Pro Controller. It does take some time getting used to dual analogue for sure, but I do like the motion control elements.

@NoName

I turned the motion off.

Wiimote aiming is natural to me, Gyro aiming not so much. Especially when you're still pairing it with twin sticks.

I hope they patch in Wiimote controls later on. It's baffling that they're not there as a standard option.

Just played the tutorial, one single player level, and 2 matches. Got my butt kicked and our team lost both times! Although I did get more kills than I died, that's something.

Really loving the hub world, it's so cool! Although oddly enough the frame-rate stutters, not in-game but in the hub, bizarre!

I feel like the default controls are really complicated, the way you have to use the left stick to look left and right and the motion controls to look up and down, it's like using 3 analog sticks at once! Better to turn off the motion controls and use the left stick to look in any direction, IMHO.

If you've never played a dual-analog game before it can be really tough, I vividly remember the first time I played Halo at my friends house, back the when the Xbox was brand new, trying to move and shoot at the same time literally made me feel sick, and it definitely takes a couple hours for your brain to adjust. Just give it some time though, you'll get used to it and then it will be like second nature, you won't even think about it.

I'm missing a lot of you as Wii U friends. For just seconds out of your day, you can add Hinph and help put an end to this.

I saw that you were online playing but I have to work tonight so I was just about to log-off. It's really cool how they integrated the friends list!

@Hinph

Are you my new friend request I saw? I'll add you/make sure you're added regardless!

@deathly_hallows

We're friends on there right?

I just reached level 10 so I hit my weekend goal of contributing my drop in the bucket to the open up the rest of the game thingy.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions! I'm glad I'm not the only one perplexed by the missing controller option, but will certainly give the current setup a chance.
