This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@ploot I think that might be harder to implement after the fact. Though, I think 3-4 player does also reduce the graphical quality in some way besides just framerate, so they may even have to do both. That's my impression, but I'm no programmer.

I must be hard of seeing. I never notice frame rate dips because I'm having too much fun with the game. It's not like an old NES game where there's significant noticeable slowdown.

@r_hjort Roy Koopa, badwagon, slim tires, who needs acceleration when you've got style

@TheOldManFromZelda I don't notice the 59fps thing, but I can certainly tell when the game drops to 30 in multiplayer and it's quite a bit less smooth. Since the 59fps displays one frame twice, it does create stutter that can be perceptible. So I think it's worth patching eventually, but not a priority.

I remembered the leaderboards are something else that could use some patching up also, so I think there could be another patch in a few months that addresses these remaining issues.

@Mop it up
They reduce graphical quality at two players as well!
Once in a while you will catch a glimpse of the very blocky DK or Bowser models. It's mostly noticeable when you finish a race on Mount Wario, where the karters stop.

But yeah, I highly doubt they'll implement the 2nd player screen option anyway.

@TheOldManFromZelda
Have you played 3 or 4 players locally? 30FPS is quite noticeable, but you can get used to it pretty quickly.

@pokepal148
I do.

But playing online tonight for the first time in a while was a total blast, and went fairly well. Took me a few games before I started winning, but I'm getting used to my Metal Mario now, so I just might be stuck with him.
08/09/14, 01:08
@r_hjort BTW are you aware of how acceleration tiers work for stats?
08/09/14, 01:46
@pokepal148
I'm blissfully ignorant about everything.
08/09/14, 23:47
@r_hjort basically acceleration is rounded down

So for example if you have 2.5 bars of acceleration the game treats you as if you have 2 bars.
08/10/14, 08:03
@pokepal148
Huh. That's weird. Didn't know that.
08/10/14, 12:43
Yeah, so there's really only 5 levels of acceleration to choose from, 1 bar, 2 bars, 3, 4, or 5. Anything in between will be rounded down. 6 cannot be reached, nor can anything be under 1.

There are two types of gliders, one that gives a little more weight and one that gives a little more accel. If the accel boost isn't enough to reach the next tier, consider using the weight glider (though the two do control slightly differently in the air).

between that BS and the hidden stats remind me again why mario kart needs a stat system.
08/10/14, 23:24
In other news I'm really starting to think frantic item mode is more balanced then the regular one.
08/11/14, 01:18
Apparently 1.25 and 1.50 acceleration has their own tier for god knows what reason.
So it goes something like this:
Tier 1: 1.00
Tier 2: 1.25
Tier 3: 1.50 - 1.75
Tier 4: 2.00 - 2.75
Tier 5: 3.00 - 3.75
Tier 6: 4.00 - 4.75
Tier 7: 5.00 - 5.75

Also, for those who want to know what their hidden stats are.

Also, game, if you're going to have only 6 different stat builds LET ME PICK WHICH ONE I WANT.

Anyways, anyone know of a good course to practice on for low handling karts and drifting, a certain software developer on Wii U hasn't been so kind with automatic drifting.

Also, Roy Koopa doesn't care about yo death stare

It was frustrating getting knocked down to last place on Moo Moo Meadows tonight, but getting that potted piranha plant and riding through all the cows made up for it! All that chomping and mooing and cattle flying all over.

This sounds like my kind of party!

Who was it who complained about throwing stuff behind you as you cross the finish line? Because this one goes out to you.
08/13/14, 06:39
@Mop it up
Promise to invite me to your next house party.

Aaah, who am I kidding. I don't go to parties anymore.
08/13/14, 21:29
@r_hjort not even a... Mario Party (not 9, fuck that game)

My love for those potted Piranha plants and their indiscriminate apetite just keeps growing. Up until now I hadn't noticed that they chow down on the Bloopers before they spray their ink on you.

@pokepal148
Not even a communist party.

Haven't as much as tried a Mario Party game since the N64 days, actually.
