Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

I hit a Rosalina in first place (New Rainbow Road) with a perfectly timed bomv and her coins fell out snd everything but she kept moving. Thankfully a blue shell came for her right after that. I guess the gane detected the bullshit.

She was even going for the lame jump off the map shortcut... After that I was able to secure a well deserved first place. I'm getting much better now, even with really poorly handling karts and accel.

Strangely enough, I don't think the handling stat rrally means all that much. I in fact think it's easier to pull off crazy drifts with low handling vehicles.

@carlosrox Yeah, that sounds like a bad case of lag if even a bomb hit doesn't register on someone.

I think you're right, handling doesn't do much. From what I can tell, handling only affects normal turning and has no impact on drifts. Traction and weight class are what determine drifting.

I know this is Mario Kart Wii; but a friend showed this to me today, and it so beautifully sums up the Mario Kart experience!

@kgtennispro

This made me laugh!

I played as Lemmy these past couple days so I can get a feel for how a lightweight racer compares to a heavyweight racer. I think his low speed stat makes it more difficult for him to catch up when he falls behind, and getting bumped by heavier characters can be scary. I found myself being extra cautious around other racers because I feared being push away from the road. As for positives, his quick turning ability was good for getting out of tight situations, and high acceleration can be advantageous at times. I could sometimes pass people right next to me even though we were hit by the same item or different items at about the same time. This is a good trait to have when the finish line is in sight on the third lap. I got the impression that the lightest racers have to rely on offense a bit more than the other classes to place in one of the top half positions in a race. It was fun to play as a class than I'm not used to racing other people with, but I still prefer the heavy class.

I fired up the game for the first time last Saturday. It was awkward at first but I got the hang of it fairly quickly. I'm only doing 50cc races first. This is basically my in game tutorial.

@carlosrox After your rants about heavy characters, I was surprised to see you using Metal Mario last night. ;)
07/01/14, 20:21
@Tranquilo

Yeah, starting with 50cc is a great way to get used to the controls and tracks. I played just about each cup with different characters and vehicles until 150cc to find combinations that I liked.

@Mop it up
;)

When in Rome!

Yeah, see, I don't like using things in games that give me automatic advantages. I was gonna use just Mario on the ATV but I went with Metal since Worldwide races are much more competitive it seems. Getting hit was murderous for getting back in the race but man was it easy pushing people around. I dunno though, I'd say there's no such thing as a crappy character and vehicle setup in the game since you work with what you got, but pushing people around is probably the biggest advantage you could have.

A couple games last night had me screaming at my TV lol, you shoulda seen the luck I had. I think it was MK Stadium where I would have made 1st several times but it seemed EVERY time I was about to, I get hit by the whole WORLD'S items. I remember you were right in front of the finish line and I was right on your tail, you got hit with a blue shell that of COURSE also hits me, then I boomerang you so I get another chance, then I get hit by 2 more things! I had so many chances to get that 1st place but ended up with like, 4th or something. That one sucked. And I know I cost you your 1st as well hehe ;) So that probably sucked for you too lol.

Aside from a few really low placing matches I'd say I did a lot better. I've learned a thing or two.

I really wanna learn the intricacies of all weight classes, and stats in both extremes. That'll do me good.

I'm going to finish adding the users I haven't gotten to yet. I'm left off with Gui.
07/01/14, 22:39
Someone else here tried to add me but I can't accept cuz of a full friends list.

Many are people I don't even know so I'll have to do a spring cleaning soon.
07/01/14, 23:31
@carlosrox I actually still got 1st on Mario Kart Stadium, but it was about as close as it can get! Remember though, everyone has bad luck from time to time. I've certainly had my fair share of races where I just get smashed by every item imaginable and end up in the back ranks. Or where all I get are coins and I can't defend myself. Sometimes I swear people are targeting me, but it probably happens to everyone.

@Mop it up
lolwut you did? I remember seeing a swarm of guys coming after I got hit. You were using a very high accel combo though!
07/02/14, 09:21
Did I fucking seriously just go from 1st to 3rd cuz I got hit by people I was lapping?

That seriously just fucking happened?
07/02/14, 09:33
Well outside of a 1st place finish, most of my time was spent getting my rear end destroyed by anything and everything.

I guess that is the risk of playing with lightweights sometimes.
07/02/14, 10:20
Cryo if you were the one that red shelled me 3 times in Bowser's Castle you deserve that 8th place ;)
07/02/14, 11:13
Wasn't me. But I did nail you with a red shell at the finish line and took 1st back in another race.

Btw, 8th was at Grumble Volcano.

@Mop it up
Missed this post.

That reminds me, in one of our Mario Circuit matches I apparently hit you with my green shell behind me even though you were nowhere near it, and the replay confirms it. What did you see?

You also apparently block a red shell with a banana but then get hit by nothing several seconds later.

Do your replays show the same thing? I can't figure out some things I see in this game, but I will now assume it's all lag.

And finally, all replays ARE different right? No 2 replays, even with people in the same game, are the same right? Me and my brother have viewed many matches on our Wii U's and even with the exact same replay settings we seem to see different angles and cuts.

Was a hack released fucking tonight? Not 1st oncr, fucking 2nd at best and majority of entire nigjt was fighting for my fucking LIFE at like 6th and 9th. And of course the rare times I'm 1st or close to it, i get FUCKED.

Not impressed here. Borderline souring the game for me. Never deen such a blatant programming of the game for someone to fucking lose before.

Utterly obnoxious.

Edit: FUCKING FIRST on my last game. About time. ONE of like 40 matches.

Ps. Not correcting my typos cuz the browser and keyboard on this phone suck ass.
