Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

I raced terri-bad last night, but I was trying a new character and kart set-up. Going from Lakitu to Rosalina has been tough...when I'm good, I'm really good. The problem is recovery. Lakitu was fairly quick, but Roaslina is slow. My big problem is I jump out to early leads/front of the pack, but then I get blasted by a lot of items in a row. So I lose all my coins and positioning in seconds.

People really like Rosalina, Gold Peach, Roy, and Morton. Gonna guess those are the best characters or something?

@ludist210
Yeahhhhh I remember why I stopped playing MKWii, it had similar balancing issues. Not sure how I can do a race pretty much perfectly only to get slammed somewhere near the end. Then there's times where you physically can't do anything. You get hit once and you can't even recover from the first hit because 3 more follow immediately. There's nothing you can do. And why do people go out of their way to hit a stunned guy in like 6th place? It's idiocy. Try to move up a few spots and hit guys further ahead. What's the sense in kicking a guy when he's down especially when it won't only not help you at all, but it's also keeping you from moving up. Do people know how to play this game?

Oh and why did they remove the boost you used to be able to do when recovering from a fall (and also hits maybe)? That woulda made so much sense.

@carlosrox

Do we know for sure boosting from a recovery is gone? Maybe the mechanic to do it is different than it was in older games?
06/26/14, 18:56
@carlosrox

I've not been able to pull it off, but I'm not sure if it's been removed. That's not my problem, I'm usually on the track when I get smacked around.

Heavy weights have a clear advantage in this game, which is why you'll see so many of them in races.

It's kinda disappointing since I'm not a huge fan of heavy weights, but if I want the best shot of winning consistently I basically have to.
06/26/14, 19:10
@kgtennispro What specifically is the advantage? I hate heavys, ug.
06/26/14, 19:19
@Zero

Speed, speed, speed. Once they get out front and are uninterrupted, they are hard to catch up to. Their downside is it takes forever for them to get to top speed.
06/26/14, 19:27
@carlosrox

I usually race as Morton because he's my favorite Koopaling. Some people choose those heavyweight characters simply because they like the character.
06/26/14, 19:52
@Zero
Well they can push anyone around and that's absolutely huge in this game. It messes up other player drifts, pushes them offroad, off map, off items, etc.

And apparently they also have the top speeds as well. Handling and acceleration are their weak points, and acceleration is certainly a large factor after getting hit. My problem with heavies is I find them hard to control.

@kgtennispro
Yeah being forced to play games a certain way judt to stay competitive/win is always a pain. Call aof Duty also suffers from this.
06/26/14, 20:05
@carlosrox

Heavyweights can be pushed around too, especially if they lose acceleration.

I can understand your point, though. I may play as Lemmy the next time I jump online to see how a lightweight racer fares against other players.

This game is separated into seven weight classes for the characters and the heaviest of the heavy are Bowser, Wario, and Morton, with the two metal characters and the large Mii in the class below them. Rosalina is somewhere in the middle so I think people just like her for some reason. I also see a lot of Luigi, Yoshi, Toad, and Lemmy/Larry/Iggy.

I prefer the characters on the heavier end of the spectrum because I like the feel of their steering better, they control more like how Mario Kart Wii worked which is what I'm used to. I don't use the speedy vehicles though because that's a bit like using Krunch in Diddy Kong Racing, if anyone remembers that. Plus I like to have at least 3 in acceleration, 1 and 2 are pretty slow. I still like to switch around characters depending on my mood though so I use all classes. Some of my faves as characters are on the lighter side.

The idea of every character being able to use all the vehicles is good on the surface, but the unfortunate thing about it is that it means the lighties no longer have access to anything with speed and that's a real problem. Lighties do have stronger mini-turbo boosts but that isn't enough to make up for it.

@Mop it up

I'm sticking with Shy Guy. He may get pushed around, but I have his cornering and drifting down. I don't know if I'd be patient enough to deal with slow heavy characters. I like to be quick out of the gate! It worked well last night. I won a couple times, and generally placed OK.

A lot of people do, but they need lovin', too, just like the others.

@TheOldManFromZelda

I was actually TRYING to stay off of you (based on years of clean racing) on that Tick Tock Clock race that I won. Figured we'd finish 1-2, saw you ended up like 8th. Blomp.

I like your Shy Guy on a Wiggler. I think its hilarious.

@Mr_Mustache

WORLDS COLLIDING!

It's a good fit! It provides speed and turning for the character.

And that was a pretty good battle on that track. I got bombarded right at the end by everyone else.

Got my sights on you Lou.

Stop it, you creeper!

So, you can go ahead and add me to the mix, my NNID is Arponare. I still haven't played the game but I'll probably add a bunch of you later on today.

I like lightweights in this one. I feel like recovery from hits is super-important, especially when it feels like your rankings are kind of determined halfway through the first lap. Heavies have an advantage while in first, but it's very difficult for them to get there at all if they get hit even once (because of their slow accel). Besides, first already has a huge advantage in this game; I'm pretty confident that if I can get in first with a featherweight like Larry on the doomship, I can hold it pretty easily as long as I can block incoming shells.

@TriforceBun

I played stellar D a couple of times last night (ask NinSage).

But I feel the opposite about lightweights. We were in a room with VRs of 6-7000, and those people were using heavies. They apparently knew all the tricks for negating losing speed when spinning out and boosting when being brought on the track. I didn't get it.

I couldn't get past 7th place most times.
06/28/14, 23:25
@TheOldManFromZelda Yeah, Shy Guy is awesome! I use him on occasion too, one of my faves in the game.
