This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!


Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.


With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Everytime we run Worldwide, they're freakin' FULL. I can never get in!

I think I figured out why I like this game so much.

In my opinion, it controls almost exactly the same as Mario Kart 64, in terms of sliding and turning. There are times you should drift, and times you should not. Also, (Rob can back me up), I was a beast at MK64.. I'm much better at this game than I was MK7 or Wii.


I will never give away my secrets. I'm ready for league play.

Working through the time trails is making me appreciate the subtle track features that determine the best route each time. On previous versions it felt like, "OK, boost here for the best short cut, repeat x 2 for the fastest time." Here, it feels like they have tweaked it just enough that you need to consider when and where to boost so that you can avoid certain hazards. Only applies to certain tracks of course. In one case it was beneficial to use all 3 mushrooms in the 1st lap! Crayfish!

Lou is a Beast at everything, especially in the SACK. I think the Drifting is incredibly similar to N64. I remember struggling like CRAZY so much on Wii (for some reason) that I didn't even use that option. I was set to Automatic the entire time. Really! But yeah, I just took to this like a duck to water, almost like I've..done it before. Good call, Louuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

What I don't like about Time Trials is that they've been dissected so much that at the end of the day, there is really only one True Way to do these things for the fastest time. I absolutely HATE when the HEART gets removed from a game. The day that Mario Kart becomes 100% mechanical is a day that I won't be too happy. Ironically, NASCAR is almost entirely mechanical already, but I totally dig that. Weird.

I think I spotted another shortcut that I didn't know about yesterday on a track that I hate. But..how to get there...

--All 3 mushrooms in one lap!? CRAYFISH!!

Yeah Buddy.

I realized that last night. I was piss drunk, yet my muscle memory was guiding me through the tracks. I attribute it to MK64.

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but just to make sure it's known:

If you are disconnected during a race, or if you choose a track and then back out of the room, the CPU will take over for your driver during that race. It will still display your name on the results screen however, so unless someone else got close enough to see you driving like a dumb CPU, they may not realise that it wasn't actually you. Just something to keep in mind.

Online is being awful tonight. I'm witnessing people getting blasted with shells and have nothing happen to them, spinning out on a banana peel at full speed without losing a step, and me getting one mushroom in last place. What the fuck.

Had fun racing on Friday night with Lou, canonj, the Mustaches, and...someone I'm not remembering? Maybe Octorickin? I still have no idea how I got so far ahead of the whole field on Donut Plains 3 (a track I'm not particularly good at). I almost lapped the person in last place!

That's the lag. It's happened to me a lot too, but Friday's races were smooth.

I guess I can deal with the lag, but getting one mushroom repeatedly in the last 3 positions is inexcusable. And as far as I'm concerned, the star is useless without the little boost of speed. Yes, I understand it's helpful for cutting corners, but mushrooms do that better. What corners are there to cut on n64 star road? Useless. And the lightning is too OP. Lose three coins. Your item, become tiny, and drive slower. I'd be ok with the coins and tiny part, but losing the item is a bit much.

Yeah, I don't like Lightning, and I'm with you about Mushrooms when you're trailing. That's happened to me more times than it should have, and I'm always getting those when I'm down. It's not to say you can't use those (and Starmen) to your advantage, but it's harder to catch up without good offensive weapons.

Also, the Crazy Eight is stupid. All I want from it is the Starman, Mushroom, and Red Shell. The rest of the items can go take a hike.

EDIT: Also, I hope you put on some pants before you jumped online on Friday. Weirdo...

I too don't like the Crazy 8. The bomb hits me more often than my opponents.

Do you think they will patch in better game balance in the future? I hope so.

And yes I had pants on.
