Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@NinSage Nifty, but is there any way to view more than just my top five friends?

Speaking of, even when I view the leaderboards within the game itself, it doesn't always show all my friends who have a record. Sometimes it'll just show 2 or 3, and then I need to click it again and it may or may not show more. Anyone else having this issue or is it just me?

@Super_Conzo Yeah, the Mario Kart Channel was pretty slick, it's a shame they took it out.

@TheOldManFromZelda I was impressed! You're certainly improving at this game.

@ludist210 Yeah, it was an odd one, I don't usually see connection issues mid-race, it's typically in between if it happens.

@Zero I'm sure someone will figure out the item formula at some point. If they can figure out charm tables in Monster Hunter, they can figure out anything! In the mean time, the only thing I could offer would be videos of my own crazy races.

@GameDadGrant The boost has been on the 2 since Mario Kart DS but I feel like the timing for it has changed a bit with each game, so knowing it in one game doesn't directly translate here.

Dude, boost starts were a thing since 1992. Where have you been?

Yeah, I was gonna say.. I don't know where this "Mario Kart DS" talk or "it's been around for the last few years" stuff is coming from, we were getting better Time Trials than "possible" by getting that launch at the start of the race in Super Mario Kart.. C'mon, guys.

What they're saying is that you can max out your boost at the beginning. Depending on when you hit the gas, you'll either get a little boost or a bigger boost. I wasn't aware of this until I started doing Time Trials, and had no idea why the ghosts were getting such a better boost than I was.

@PogueSquadron

It was like that on Super Mario Kart as well, wasn't it? I remember there being little boosts and normal boosts..

If it was, that's also news to me. I never knew there were multiple levels of boost at the start of races. It was either Yes or No to me. You got a boost or you did not get a boost (or you spun out, I guess).

@-JKR-

I think the multiple levels of boost started with DS, possibly with GameCube (I haven't played either iteration in a long time, so I can't verify), but the boost start has existed since the very first game.

I'm pretty sure Super Mario Kart had only one level of boost, but it felt so good.
06/18/14, 01:06
Yeah I think the boost off the line didn't start til later.

Edit: varying boosts

I have no idea. I've been farting a lot lately, too, so I get my boosts all mixed up.
Coming off the starting line, coming off the couch; gets confusing.

I'll be online for a bit if anyone's interested.

I'm at work, not ignoring you. Good luck.

@Mr_Mustache

It's okay, everyone else is

@VofEscaflowne
I joined, then there was a weird COMM error as the race began. Now I'm "unable to join."
Boo.
06/18/14, 03:13
ARGH!
After finally connecting to a race, my Wii Remote batteries died. Idling for even a bit kicked me out of the race.
I need to keep a closer eye on my battery indicator.

EDIT - Had some fun runs with NinSage that ended in the infamous room comm error. And we were probably going to play SUNSHINE AIRPORT! Sigh.

My current record against most of my NW friends... about even.

My current record against Mop it Up... 2 wins 12 losses.

Fun races last night! Sorry I had to bail so quick...hard to voice chat when both my wife and daughter are asleep. I was tired, about to pass out that last race.

What I was trying to say is that the blue shell never hit me when we ran Yoshi Valley. I saw whoever shot it, and I heard it moving around the screen (and I was playing with headphones, so that made it scarier), but it never once hit me nor did I evade it. I'm pretty sure I was in first place the whole race too...

Also, fun fact: Piranha Plants can eat Bloopers. No ink for me!

@Mop it up

Thanks! According to Dr. Fink, I have the fastest time trial at Donut Plains 3 amongst his friends. Honestly, I could do better, too...

Multiple levels of boost started on DS. Double Dash!! still had the old-school boost where you had to press 'A' just before GO!

How does sharing ghosts in Time Trials work? If I select "Upload Ghost Data", the game wants me to make a post on Miiverse. If I cancel this step, the game then says that it has finished uploading the ghost data. Does this mean that it still uploads the ghost data even if I don't make a post on Miiverse?

For example, I have uploaded ghosts for all the Mushroom cup tracks, but have only made one Miiverse post for Mario Kart Stadium. Can you guys see my ghosts for the other 3 tracks?
