Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

I don't think the item distribution is "almost completely random". When I'm up front I tend to get single coins (which I admit is a dumb addition, since it doesn't give you much and has no defensive capabilities), banana peels, green shells, or red shells. When I'm near the back, I get tons of triple mushrooms and some stars, with the occasional blue shell (which I hate whether I'm at the front or the back) or bullet bill.

But yeah, I dunno, we're just having a different experience here.

I think you probably are top 2%, but you have to remember that a lot of casuals / kids play Mario Kart and you're probably rarely racing against them due to the way the match system works.

@Zero With the exception of first place, every item can appear in 2nd through 12th. The item chosen is random, though some items have a higher chance of appearing than others depending on position. I've actually gotten more Crazy 8 items in 2nd and 3rd than farther back. I've gotten lightning in 2nd and 3rd as well. Not to mention, in a previous post I mentioned getting a Bullet Bill in 3rd and 5th. Meanwhile, I get single greens, bananas, and coins all the time if I happen to fall back to 8th and below.

So yeah, it's nearly totally random except for 1st, which can only get a few choice items.

I guess I'll take the 2% thing as a compliment, ha ha, but I don't know... I've certainly had a lot more trouble placing high when I enter rooms of people in the 4000 and higher. And I don't think it's just luck that's making me lose.

@ludist210

Wait, you can max out your boost? How is this?
06/16/14, 21:48
@-JKR-Yeah, the boost at the beginning has various levels of boost power based on when you begin to hold the accelerator. As soon as the "2" appears as a solid number during the countdown, start holding the accelerator and you'll get the largest boost. If you spin out then you held it too early, and if you get a smaller boost or no boost then you held it too late. Try practicing it in time trials against a ghost, they use the best possible boost in their times. So if your boost keeps pace with the ghost, you know you did it right.

@-JKR-

What @Mop it up said. It's very similar to how it works in Mario Kart 7.
06/16/14, 22:03
@Mop it up

Yep, learned this using time trials myself. I feel it really matters too.
06/16/14, 22:04
@Mop it up

Cool, good to know, thanks! No wonder I always boost at the start into last place. :P
06/16/14, 22:21
um, so, I didn't know about this before but, if you want accurate, up to date info on your friends' Time Trails (along with a bunch of other stuff) you can see it super easily on mariokart.tv. You sign in with your NNID and then it's the best thing ever. I urge you all to check it out!

@NinSage
Holy heck, that's awesome! Although it would be more useful in the game.... like they had on MKWii. What gives?
06/17/14, 00:05
@Super_Conzo

I felt bummed. When I enter a friends room, I try to go "HELLO!" and then they're like "oh man, I recognize that face!" I fell out, saw your mug, and went "..awww.." Sorry buddy. We'll race again soon!

@Zero

I COULD'VE BEEN, WAY TO CALL.

@Infinitywave

Glad you knew that was me! I wasn't sure if your recognized me at all since there is no mentioned of "Mustache" at all. That was the most UK'ers I've run with at the same time, and after joining you I was class of the field (in terms of VR score). Glad we could end the way we did, 3 1-2 finishes out of the final 4 or so runs. Nice! (And to confirm, I 100% joined you via the Friends section.)

@TheOldManFromZelda

I went from 1st to 12th in about 6 seconds on The Airport Stage the other day. "This is my last race coming up." And then I won the next race, so that part was cool. But yeah, Annoying Town.

@kgtennispro

..oh, sorry. I protect Lou CONSTANTLY when its just us running, and I do favoritism towards NW people in general as well. Heck, Kenny, I raced you clean at Moo Moo Meadows that one time! I could've been a stupid freakin' jerk to you, but we're budddds.

@pokepal148
@NinSage

Ink F's me up. Often.

@Zero

Sounds like you need some NASCAR in your life.
06/17/14, 01:04
Gotta love how everyone just ignores me
06/17/14, 01:11
@VofEscaflowne

I don't ignore you! And I responded directly to you in your thread about Lufia. PFFFFT.

Didn't you play Mario Kart DS? I thought you played that game back in the day. It's been this way in Mario Kart since 2005.
06/17/14, 01:56
@Mop it up I'd be interested in seeing some official breakdown of the numbers. Because my experience has definitely been that the further up you get, the weaker items you get, in general. It has not been "nearly totally random" at all.
06/17/14, 03:15
edit: Dunno why I posted this. Conversation was over.

@Mop it up

Good racing last night! Sorry I had to bail for a few minutes once, and I'm also sorry for picking a track instead of waiting for more people. At least I won our head to head battle! Haha.

@Mop it up

Not sure what happened in our random regional room. I guess we all got booted off in the middle of the Twisted Mansion race.
06/17/14, 16:10
@GameDadGrant

I only played Mario Kart DS alone. I started to play online, and it was filled with snaking cheat mongers who I wanted to find in real life and break the legs of, so it did bad things to me emotionally and I stopped so I would not feel that way anymore.

It's news to me.
06/17/14, 17:43
@GameDadGrant

Dude, boost starts were a thing since 1992. Where have you been?
06/17/14, 18:01
Just popped on for a few online races while I was home for lunch, and ended up racing with Ace & Gary (or Clayton and Jame from Ontario) who were racing in tandem on purpose. So I didn't care if I came in first or not, I made it my mission to break up their races. That stuff drives me crazy. Sure, GP with my wife against computer AI is one thing, but I'd never play like that online in a Mario Kart game.

So if you go up against Ace & Gary, go ahead and knock them around a bit for me.
