This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!


Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.


With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Jason and I played for a little bit, didn't see any friends on all night (though BP joined us for a couple) until Conzo joined us for a race, and I left (Jason didn't want to play anymore) and realized AFTERWARDS that he just joined up (sorry, SC!).

I like how mop_it_up is complaining about tracks not requiring enough skill in mario kart. As if mario kart isn't a mostly luck based game.

Also I feel that the tanooki tail, fake item box(with item blocking capabilities), and the mega mushroom should have returned, and the star should have been given a nice speed boost, triple mushrooms shouldn't roam around you for others to steal and items should take at most two coins.

Also make weight a decent stat, for christ sake.

@Mop it up the basic mechanic of collecting and holding on to coins to slightly boost your speed is a great idea but it's just way too easy to get combo-ed out of all of your coins because someone got a triple red shells and knows the timing to hit me all three times.

my basic ideas for salvaging this mechanic are as follows

1. Tweak how many coins are lost when you get hit
losing 3 for running into a banana peel or general course hazard or for falling off a ledge(by my own actions, not because lighting struck me in midair on a gliding segment) on rainbow road? Sure keep that,

Two for being hit by any other item besides lightning.

One for being hit by lightning.
2. Tweak the way hitboxes work so that if I get hit by an item I gain a certain grace period that allows me to basically not lose coins if something else happens like say I fell off the ledge because I was hit while in a gliding segment.

3. Put more coins in tracks. It feels like they are using the same mantra in placing these things as they did in 7. That would be fine and dandy but 7 had only 8 racers and supplied enough coins to support 8 racers.

Mk8 seems to have failed to increase the number of coins given to accommodate 12 racers which leads to issues where it feels like the track is wide enough to take another row of coins.

4. Kill the coin itembox item. there are enough issues with item balance as is. That bitch in second has triple red's headed my way and you're giving me two coins?

Also on items let's have some fun with item balance as well,

1. Make lightning less common, for god sakes. The blue shell at least helps other racers catch up to me but lightning just annoys everyone.

2. Kill the coin item and blooper, neither of these are ever useful.

3. bring back the tanooki tail, mega mushroom, and the version of a star that gave a speed boost. Heck how about that bowser shell from double dash, let's bring that back, that seems fun.

4. Why do you have to have triple mushrooms surrounding me, that just makes me feel pressured to use them before someone can steal them. Also give the star that slight speed boost it had before 7.

5. Bring back the ability to hold a second item. I can understand having exceptions to this where if you use a more powerful item like a piranha plant or mega shroom you can't pick up a second item until it has been used (and by used in this case I mean the effects of the power up are gone so for example if you pick up a mega shroom you can't pick up a second item until you have used it and been returned to normal size.

6. introduce an item that basically sends some magikoopa or something to terrorize first place for a while. Maybe it summons a few airships to go out and fire cannon balls at whoever is in first place like in shy guy beach only a bit more frantic, just something that even if I avoid will still probably slow me down.

I think that you should be able to hold more than ten coins. Let the number be unlimited but only the first ten increase your speed. In this way players can attempt to create a buffer against the speed loss.

If only there was a way we could just message each other in game. How is it that even Pokemon can do something like this but not Mario Kart? It really does blow my mind.

Was just playing on Global for the first time and got in a few races with Mr_Mustache. NW represented pretty well with a first or two. :)

Does the system try to match you with your friends?

Seems unlucky. In every race I seem to get into, if someone gets into first they win, hands down. Everyone else just wrecks each other and nothing EVER happens to the person miles ahead in first place. Which is why I feel the game is rather broken, honestly. If you're not in first, chances are good you're not going to get first.

Fun races with Ploot (and some randoms) today. No idea who that Lindsey was, but she was smoking everyone! I beat her once and it's like she came unglued and had to beat me silly every other race we competed in. She even used my classic "Go easy on me" sandbagging line! Yeesh!

@Infinitywave I'm not sure.

But, you do know that when you go to "friends" online you can see who is online and racing and try to join them directly from there, right? I'd assume it only works if they are racing with less than the full 12 people.

Sorry to bail fairly quickly there Mop, but I was having crap luck, lol.

I will note, that I'm not a fan of this "clan" thing I'm noticing in matches lately. It was on that Wario Stadium race where I blatantly saw two of those four people with the "clan" tags actually protect each other. The person in 2nd intentionally hoarded these 3 red shells they had to protect their buddy who was in first. Things like that just bother me more than they probably should

Interestingly enough, I have a really hard time when people use the Blooper on me in this game! Never happened before!! I have no idea why. Maybe something with the design of the new courses or maybe the ink is harder to see through this time??

But yea, it doesn't usually do the person USING the item much good.

Loving the game though!!

@NinSage The Blooper ink makes your drifting more slippery.

@Infinitywave If you start a race normally then no, it does not try to match you up, it just chooses random opponents. You have to go to the friends option and join someone through that.

@-JKR- I agree. Not that previous games didn't have issues, but they weren't this bad.

@-JKR-@Mop it up I dunno, I've come from behind to take 1st many times.

Still, it's interesting that Mario Kart has trained us to think that we deserve to come from behind. Like, why should that naturally be the case? In most every other multiplayer game I play (besides Mario Party), if you fall behind, you're probably going to lose.
