Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@chrisguy don't care.

If you're playing MK8 on-line and one of the other players puts his Samus figurine down, and then Samus comes from nowhere and zaps all the other karts, would you care then?

I guess that's my question. How are they going to employ these things in MK8 so that people will want to use them, but not make them an "instant buy-a-win?" In the Smash Bros demonstration, they sort of looked like they would be more powerful assist trophies. The logical MK equivalent would be the "?" power-ups. Could this be done in a balanced way?

@chrisguy

Amiibo might not interest him at this time.

As for Mario Kart 8...wouldn't you think there would be specific amiibo for that game? The amiibo that we've seen so far are branded for Super Smash Bros. Just a thought.

@chrisguy

That would be silly if it was just an instant win function. I think in some interview, they mentioned something regarding Mario Kart perhaps approaching a more "Smash Bros" build, meaning that it could start introducing characters from other franchises. I wonder if it would simply be to unlock new characters then?

The only thing I can think of for Ambiibo is that you could just store all your ghost data on one thing automatically....but still, this would be useful mainly for Wii U's not connected to the internet.

^^If it's all just unlocking characters, what about existing racers like Mario and Peach? What happens when you put their Ambiibos on the Gamepad? I'd kind of just like to see it unlock new costumes and stuff.

IMO Ambiibo would be cool enough as a little "key" that unlocks fun little bonuses in different games. Way better than paying for costumes in Batman or whatever.

Man, I really, really hope Nintendo doesn't use Amiibo to have people pay to get advantages in games (even slight ones.) That kind of junk has infected the industry and it needs to stay out of Nintendo games.
06/12/14, 23:11
It'd be awesome for something like Fire Mario. Wario Ware Wario costume. Different colored Yoshis and Toads. I'd be all for they kind of stuff.

So instead of getting a good character for doing the grand prix I wound up getting metal mario... who is currently trolling my next gp attempt

06/13/14, 00:03
It would be cool if the Amiibo was like it is in Brawl, where you can race against it and it gets experience and improves. Then eventually you could train against this insane, perfect power sliding, fire hopping, near-cheating monstrosity and get really good at the game.

Or at least try until your fingers bleed before you realize a robot is always better at this than a human.

@pokepal148

I will say the way you unlock characters is random. I got all seven Koopalings in a row while I was using Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and the babies. I didn't care for that.

The way the end of the video was edited, it looked like Roy was punching Metal Mario after he crossed the finish line. That's pretty funny.

@ludist210 it ain't over yet... this is war

@pokepal148

Nice! Way to hang in there!

That was the hardest new track for me to beat the staff ghost on in Time Trials. I think it took me eight tries to nail the right route (the rest of the tracks took me no more than three attempts, and I was able to do most on the first try).
06/13/14, 00:36
One thing I'm realizing is how little interest I have in the Koopa Kids. I haven't even tried any of them out yet.
06/13/14, 00:48
@Zero

I did it just for the stamps (since I main Lakitu/Shy Guy), but they're a nice addition. Better than Bowser Jr., at least in my book.
06/13/14, 00:55
@ludist210 I feel like at least in NSMB bowser jr adds to their dynamic by giving them a sort of ring leader for their little circus show. Meanwhile it's taking me way too long to upload the bowsers castle one which imo is the weakest one (after the first lap metal got hit with a blue shell and everything just slipped in my favor which is annoying because the highlights seem to focus more on the second and third lap where I'm just 8 miles ahead of everything.

Update: apparently it didn't upload properly... ugh,

@TheOldManFromZelda

Love Donut Plains 3. Home track!

Zero said:
@PogueSquadron I have yet to experience it, though it sounds pretty crappy.

Guillaume said:
Fun games tonight, Zero!

Then you and everyone else bailed.

Z, you haven't experienced it because YOU'RE the one bailing. Gui, did you get an error after that?

@Shadowlink

Why do they complain about you picking a course you want? I'll generally pick a course (that I want, ie: Donut Plaints 3) until it comes up, and then I'll move on to my 2nd preferred course (ie: Yoshi Valley or similar), and so on through the night. I'll either wrap back around a few hours down the pipe, or I'll be done with it. I don't know how that system can be knocked at all.

@TheOldManFromZelda

When are you on? I can play tonight after worrrrk.

@chrisguy

I was hoping they were going to run their DLC in that manner. But..yeah, I don't know. Speculation = disappointment.
06/13/14, 01:33
I've played like 5 hours online already! I never bail! But you have to quit sometime.
06/13/14, 01:48
@Mr_Mustache I'll probably be on once I'm done with the uploads.
Edit:done

@pokepal148

Sorry, I was on. I actually played with Mop it up on the Water Park and then the room bailed, so I played with 11 randoms in regional for four races (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 1st...not a bad night) and signed off. I checked my friends list before I got offline and nobody was on, so it said.

I might be on a little earlier tonight.
