It's more like the Gameboy Mega Man games. Capcom probably realized they couldn't do a proper 8-bit port of this game, so they Gameboy-ized it.
I've only played the first two GB games, but compared to those Xtreme seems like a far less original product. Wily's Revenge and (especially) Mega Man II had entirely new stages with familiar elements, but all the level layouts in Xtreme are almost carbon copies of their counterparts in X and X2, just with very minor alterations and some chunks cut out altogether. In fact, the only completely new element to the game is one (crappy) boss, at least in "Normal mode." It even has all the same music. Just, you know, downgraded.

That sounds pretty good, but I'm still wondering how the heck you dash in the game. The way I like playing MMX is setting dash to one of the shoulder buttons, and I'm pretty much doing it constantly throughout the entire game. I can't imagine a setup with two buttons that'd make it comfortable to dash jump off walls and such...
The fact is, dashing isn't all that essential in this game. You don't have enough screen space to really see what's coming, and most dash-centric obstacle layouts have been shortened. And X's regular speed actually seems a bit faster than usual to me. Plus you actually dash-jump off walls automatically...not that you ever need the extra distance and speed, and in fact it occasionally makes jumping up narrow passages a bit wonky. But overall I was pleased with the movement in this game, felt right for the game while also very close to the feel of Mega Man X.

So yeah, I beat it on "Normal Mode." Apparently "Hard Mode" is really more like a second quest, with different levels and bosses (still from X and X2), and you keep all your weapons and upgrades from Normal Mode. Why didn't they just put these four new stages into the original mix and keep it traditional? Just don't get it.

Anyway, this game's interesting from a historical perspective I guess, but it's basically pieces of X and X2 smooshed into a GBC-sized package. Not terribly compelling for those who have already played those games. But it's fun for me to compare. Anyone else pick it up on the 3DS VC?

Yeah, I downloaded it, and it's about as good as I remember it. And I remember it being "okay" but not terribly impressive. The original Mega Man Gameboy games were better.

There was an entirely different studio developing the Xtreme games, so that is likely reason why they are so different.

But yeah, they "Gameboy-ized" the X games and shoved 'em into a GBC cartridge. And for the most part it works, but I find it less compelling than the old-school, OG-Mega Man games.

I do like that you get both the Hadouken and the Shoryuken, and you keep them for Hard Mode. Makes them feel more useful and less like mostly pointless Easter Eggs. They're even toned down so they don't insta-KO bosses, too.

Yeah, but I kinda don't like that they don't OHKO anymore. That's what made them so cool!

Well, they are cool moves regardless, but the OHKO ability made it that much more awesome.
