Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Golf: World Tour on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Mario Golf is a series that has been around perhaps longer than anyone realizes. In America anyway, the first game released June 30th, 1999 for the N64. Just two months shy of it's 15-year anniversary, Camelot Software is bringing another entry back into the limelight on 3DS. In fact, it's been nearly ten years since the last Mario Golf game (crazy to think about). The original game's tag-line was "Tee Up With Mario and His Friends". Here you'll get to do just that, and this time in glorious 3D graphics.

Mario Golf brought us the mechanics and the initial characters. It brought us the premise and set the bar high. A few months after the N64 release a Game Boy Color title released. Then Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, a GameCube gem released in summer of 2003, took things farther with higher-fidelity graphics as well as more Mushroom-Kingdom-esque courses. I'll never forget the joy brought to me by that game that summer and for many years there after. Finally, the last time we saw a club-clad Mario and friends was in June 2004 with Mario Golf: Advanced Tour on the GameBoy Advance which expanded things in a specific direction... RPG-like qualities for character building.

In just two short weeks Nintendo fans will finally be able to play the next installment (which receive an initial year-long delay when it was originally intended to be released in Summer 2013). This title looks to expand on the formulas that made it great while finding a middle ground between the two different tiers that have developed over time.

This title looks to have a ton of features in store and a ton of gameplay opportunity. It keeps it's arcade-appeal with the classic Power-Bar which allows you to decide just how far to hit the ball, and if you're savvy enough, it allows you to put some hook, draw, or angle to the ball as well. For those who are less versed in these mechanics or just want a more simplified experience, you can once again choose to automate the latter portion of the swing. This time around, being on 3DS and all, you can opt to use the stylus to tap the screen in leu of using a button and also you can use the stylus to decide how to affect the ball post-launch.

As you can see from the above screenshots, the game has taken a significantly stronger focus on creative levels inspired by the Mushroom Kingdom, which means I should be getting exactly what I want most from the series. It's uncertain who the final roster will be in the game as playable characters but it is known that you can play as your own Mii and do all sorts of cool stuff. By using your Mii, you can engage in a somewhat altered version of the RPG-like qualities of games' past. Customize your Mii with headgear, clubs, pants, and other features which not only change the design of your golfer but the attributes as well. I'm quite excited to have this customized experience.

Check out the game in the Game Database to find all sorts of videos (though I'll post them on page one of this thread as well) and don't forget to add this to your collection come May when the game releases. Also, if you're still finding yourself without a pre-order, Amazon.com still has the game for $29.99 with the pre-order price guarantee. At three-quarters the original price, there's no excuse not to nab this up day one!

Check out the main website at mariogolf.nintendo.com and see even more content. There you'll also find more details on the online-component to this game which better explains the 'world' in World Tour. You'll be able to play matches online against opponents from anywhere on the planet. This key feature should give Mario Golf fans abundantly more play-time from their cart or download. You can also check out this great impressions article from Daan Koopman over at NintendoWorldReport. It'll detail even more about courses and gameplay, etc.

Now that the game is out, it's time to hit the green and find ourselves in some tournaments! Below are the codes for various Negative World Tournaments. I'll do my best to keep up on these as they change.

Ha, I should have read your words more closely. I've just been bouncing all over this game without much rhyme or reason. Practice rounds, tournaments, training challenges. All good stuff. The community stuff'll be cool once we coordinate properly.

It's too bad that they hid a ton of the game behind "Quick Round." Everything should be accessible from the Castle Club!

Quick Round holds all the tournament options and the challenges (ring golf, coin golf, character matches, etc.). Loads of fun!

@anon_mastermind Not to down the idea of real-time matches but... with tournaments, is there really even much of a point? We could still have chat nights where everyone hops in and plays in a tournament a bit and has fun and its at everyone's own pace and such. I guess real-time matches limits everyone to one chance instead of many. Can you set up tournaments where everyone only gets one chance?

@ploot Yeah I was not aware of this until you people started talking about it. I pretty much always skip "quick" type stuff in games because it's usually just stuff you can play elsewhere but without having to go through a lot of menus and such to get into the game. Like a default setup or whatever.

It's really amazing how much content there is in this game after Mario Tennis Open was basically lacking in any single player content at all

It's going to take forever for me to get all the star coins. And then after that I've read there are even more coins to collect.

Ah, I didn't realize the NW tournament was created. Tried my hand at it and number one spot!

@anon_mastermind

How do you check your standing in the tournament?

Also, where do I find the communities?

I guess the biggest complaint so far is that there is so much "hidden" content. I mean, it's hard to navigate and find everything you're looking for.

But the meat of the game, so far, is outstanding. I'm loving it all. I burn though 18 holes in 15 minutes.

Well, my first score on the Peach course was a -7. But that was before I joined the tournament.

Then I came in thinking I'd do great... and got a -3.

Then I played again, doing much better... and choked. Luckily a last hole eagle saved me for a -5.

Still... I can do better.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Communities are under VS in Mario Golf mode. I just check Scores in the Tournament section for the current standings.

And I'm still deciding if I want to play the tournaments more than once. Maybe.

3rd try... up to 3rd place with a -7. Made a few bad shots, think I could have pulled off a -8 or a -9 without those mistakes.

Freaking Mikey though... no idea how he did that.

@Koovaps

Thanks dude.

Yeah, playing over and over to better your score defeats the spirit of a tournament. But I guess there's no way to limit it to one play per tourney? I'll use the honor system and only play a tourney one time.

Depends how you look at it I guess. I think it makes it more interesting, a sort of tug of war between the top spots, people coming back and putting up better scores, etc. Difficult to say for sure where things will end up.

Besides, if everyone is only going to play once, it becomes advantageous to just wait until the end and see how everyone else scored. If they did well, you know you have to be more aggressive, if they did poorly, you can be a bit more conservative. And in this game specifically you can even see everyone's shots and base yours off of theirs... how much did the wind affect them, how much did they bounce / roll, etc. AND... especially with the game so new, whoever goes last can get another week or two of practice in. Kind of gives whoever goes last a huge advantage.

Still waiting for this game to be delivered. Amazon should have sent me an advanced copy!
05/05/14, 15:48
@Abdooooo

Your Amazon copy didn't ship? When did you place the order?
05/05/14, 18:21
I literally just unlocked Star Daisy from the Star Challenges...so nine Star Coins (still have no idea what they do). One more and I'm done with the first set on the Forest Course.

Man, this game is good.

@DrFinkelstein

Oh it shipped on Thursday but the estimated arrival date is today. I'm gonna go check the mail in a few!

@ludist210 What is a star challenge and where do I find it?

WHY DOES THIS GAME HIDE SO MUCH FROM THE PLAYERS?!
05/05/14, 22:03
@Zero

Quick Play > Single Player (or something similar...I'm not in front of my 3DS at the moment). It's on the bottom.

Maybe we should make a flow chart showing how to find all of the content in this game, lol.

Anyway, I don't know why it didn't hit me until last night but I was playing and getting all nostalgic and wondering why and then I was like oh, yeah, of course... this is the first new Mario Golf game in 10 years! Nintendo has ignored Mario Golf for way too long!

Have a lot of great memories of the older ones (the console ones anyway, which were the only ones I played back then.) Especially Toadstool Tour, that was one of the few games my brother and cousins got into with me so we played it a lot.

Unfortunately we rarely get together to play games now and when we do we just play on consoles because none of them have a 3DS except my brother. In theory we could play a golf game by passing the 3DS around but... that's probably not going to happen, so will probably not be able to recreate those times. But I'm sure getting nostalgic for them...

10 years ago!

@Zero

I said it on the podcast from Friday, the reason I don't understand the "samey" angle some reviewers have is because why would this feel like retread after ten years. Not only has it been ten years, but they've put in more content, online mode, and other things like items and outfits.
05/05/14, 23:01
@DrFinkelstein Hmm. I kind of get the complaint though, a lot does feel "samey". I feel like maybe with some thought they could have figured out a better method than the same swing meter thing that has been around since the early days of golf games. It's a tad bit disappointing that I sort of feel like I'm just playing Toadstool Tour on new courses. Plus some things seem to have taken a step backwards, like the camera is iffier. And I don't think it is possible anymore to check the theoretical arc before shooting of a shot when you hit the ball off-center like it was in Toadstool Tour?

Still though, Toadstool Tour was awesome so more of that isn't bad. And it does have a lot of content...
