I am this close to popping a vein…! KIU smack will not be allowed in this thread, just show yourselves out if you're going to spout the disrespect. *snap snap snap*

Controls were fine.

Clearly user error

Wish I could vote for Handheld GOTY now. I'm not even that far into Link Between Worlds, but it is so good that I could vote for it in good conscience.

Kid Icarus Uprising is one of the worst video games I've ever played, definitely did not deserve a GOTY award. Maybe worst controls of the century award: WCOTC, it could have won that easily.

You've gone from "I didn't hate it" to "one of the worst video games ever"? Granted, I'm not a fan either and gave up on it very shortly because of the controls, but that seems extreme.

@Jargon
I'm exaggerating, hyperbole and whatnot, I played the entire game and it had it moments, the flying sections were often very cool, but the ground... not so much. Anyhoo, all joking aside no way it deserved to be GOTY, at the very least it was a divisive game, not that everyone has to agree on GOTY but games that are this love/hate must be doing something really wrong.

For the record the worst game I ever played was Peter Jackson's King Kong for DS... WOW! That was B. A. D.

Haha wow that is hideous

@Jargon
I bought it for $40 at Virgin Mega Store in Times Square (back when it existed), reviews unread... I thought it was port of the console game (which was supposedly pretty good)... OH DEAR LORD I WAS WRONG. The funny thing is I tried to play it but it was so glitchy and crashy it literally couldn't be completed, I never made it to New York, there was a boss battle against the T-Rex and it froze every time, the end! The only game I've ever seen that just flat-out ended in a terminal error. Haha!

SWEET JESUS WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?

Kill it with Fire.

Must play.

@deathly_hallows But it won our handheld GOTY and we have a popular vote here so... as love / hate as it was, the love clearly won out in the end.

It's not like it had no competition either... it beat out Paper Mario: Sticker Star, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Resident Evil Revelations, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, and Virtue's Last Reward...

On another note, King Kong on the consoles was actually pretty good. It was too uneven for me to call it excellent, but at its best it was, and the bad parts (usually the Kong parts) were largely kept to a minimum.

On another note, why on Earth would you ever assume A. that it was a port of the console games or B. that it would perform well on the DS even if it was. I know you're a handheld guy, but you need to be realistic here. How often did the DS get solid ports of 3D console games?!

I think KIU is the best game I've played since, like…2010 (SMG2) or something. Wildly creative, tons of content, fun and challenging as heck, and the best original cast in a Nintendo game since…well, ever?

The haters can suck on 'taters!

@Zero
It blows my mind that people think that game has good controls, or equally it blows my mind that people are willing to give the bad controls a pass because "he's the Smash guy". I've never been more baffled by anything in gaming, as much as I dislike Metroid Prime 3 for very similar reasons that game controls like a dream compared to KIU.

@TriforceBun
I disagree with everything you just wrote, except the taters cos those are delicious.
01/03/14, 19:51
@deathly_hallows I don't think it has good controls though, I think it is an awesome game despite control issues.

@Zero. BINGO.

That's like saying Lance Armstrong is an "awesome guy" despite some anger and dishonesty issues.

@deathly_hallows

He came back after Cancer! That's pretty awesome!!
01/03/14, 20:52
@deathly_hallows Meh.

I dunno. I mean, the controls, to me, were obviously far from perfect. Yet I loved the game anyway. Unique gameplay, creative design, awesome dialog, stunning (for a handheld, anyway) graphics and soundtrack... definitely exceeded any expectations that I had. I can deal with iffy controls.

Really I didn't mind them that much though, albeit one thing could have made them so much better to me, but... we already talked about this ad nauseam back when the game came out so... don't need to get into that again.

@Mr_Mustache
Exactly, he also won a bunch of bike races and raised a bunch of money for charity, so does he deserve "Human Being of the Year" award even though he cheated by taking drugs, lied about taking drugs for years, forced other cyclist on his team to take drugs, and used his fame and money to ruin other people's careers and lives out of pure spite and hatred?

@Zero
Yeah, for me no amount of content or graphics, music, unlockables, or "smash-bros.-ness" can make up for terrible controls that practically break the game and make it incredibly un-fun to play. I also just expect the GOTY to have good controls, no game is perfect but there are plenty of games with great graphics and presentation and lots of content that also have great controls are fun to play. All of those things, to me, are the bare minimum a game has to accomplish to be considered for GOTY.

@deathly_hallows

Much worse has happened with other people before. And he was stripped of his awards. The "pure spite and hatred" part is a bit of a stretch, I'd go with "pure selfishness and goldlust," but select as you please.

Remember, most people DIE from Cancer; this guy beat it, and then won races. Drugs or not, pretty f'n impressive.
