The most comfortable place in my apartment is my bed. The Wii U is in the living room. The Wii u doesn't have the best connection to the bedroom. So, yeah, sometimes I like to curl up in the bed with a game. It's a nice experience and is very comfortable for me. I'm sorry it's not for either of you but I love relaxing in the bed with my XL. Again, for me it's like reading a book in bed before I fall asleep. It's just a nice wind down time for me.

Spinoffs?

What Zelda game on portables has EVER been a spinoff?

There is a reason ALBW is on the 3DS. This whole 'it should have been on a console!' thing is just ludicrous.

Sorry, I meant side story. That's open to debate I guess but...come on.

For the 3D stuff, right? I was thinking about this last night.. Does it work on 2DS?

And my understanding of Link's Awakening was that it was kindof a spinoff of Link to the Past. I mean, it looked the same, and now GameBoy people got to play it, too. Same with 4 Swords, and those Spirit Tracks or whatevers after Wind Waker landed.

I wonder how adamant you guys will be about 3DS getting Zelda games when you get Hyrule Warriors 3D. Enjoy!

Let's not forget what a mess that 3DS was in, and that ALBW likely started off as a project to help it out (I believe it started off as a straight remake because Miaymoto thought the 3D would be pretty cool with LttP's top down perspective) . I'm sure we'll be seeing similar efforts from Nintendo to help jumpstart the Wii U. It's also important to remember that Nintendo has never fully supported both platforms at the same time. When one system is floundering, the other is usually awesome. I mean, what was Nintendo giving the DS in 2009, 2010, 2011? Pokemon Platinum, Black and White, some Layton games they didn't develop, Kirby's Mass Attack? All while the Wii was getting Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Galaxy 2, Other M, Kirby's Epic Yarn, DKCR, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Skyward Sword.

They just go back and forth, more or less. Cramming the 3DS with killer titles during and after a potential failure - I don't think you could really blame them. Now with the 3DS doing well, they probably feel more comfortable putting more attention on the Wii U. The handhelds have been their lifeline through thick and thin. While the N64, Gamecube, and now Wii U have been declining in sales, the handhelds have always been their insurance policy.

@Mr_Mustache
Link's Awakening is very different from LttP. That makes little sense, Stachey mah boy.

@PogueSquadron
Exactly.

Also, whoa guys, did portable gaming kill someone you know? This discussion is pretty ridiculous.
01/02/14, 23:27
I believe the point he's making is that LttP started off as a console game, and now people who don't play handheld games are left in the dark. It never really happens the other way around - for instance, the sequel to Golden Sun didn't jump to consoles for no reason. Dragon Quest had an official numbered sequel on the handheld, when it was a console game forever. Monster Hunter as well, jumped to handheld (which is probably more of an indication of where the Japanese gaming market is than anything).

Honestly, I think the thing with ALBW is that it was some cheap experiment project that Nintendo didn't feel like dumping a ton of money into, so they kept it on the 3DS.

@PogueSquadron

Isn't it great that a Zelda game with such a relatively small budget is the one that is finally receiving near universal praise? Makes me smile.

With Aonuma finally seeing the light on how shitty forced hand-holding is, I can't wait to see the Wii U game. I think this series is back.
01/03/14, 00:04
@carlosrox

None of them are side stories either.

You're drawing a ridiculous non-existent distinction.

@PogueSquadron

It's their own fault that they're left in the dark. Nothing is stopping them from playing these games. We go back to Mustache complaining about Monster Hunter 4- IT's his own fault if he doesn't play it. I have no sympathy for the complaints.

If at any time a 'handheld' franchise moves to a console, I'll be there playing it if I want to.
01/03/14, 00:04
@ploot

It looks the same.

@PogueSquadron

Add Luigi's Mansion, Yoshi's Island, Fire Emblem, and Tales of ________.

The mere SUGGESTION of Pokemon on a console has people freaking out, we've already experienced going "oh..it's on handheld stuff.." Multi-platform people don't care because they have all bases covered, but those are generally the same people who go "eesh, enough New Super Mario already..." It has its perils, and what is worse in the videogame market than supersaturation? (besides a drought, I guess..)

@Hinph

I've played a lot of poop lately, too. To me, its been downhill since Ocarina, and Link to the Past was pretty darn awesome. Hated Twilight Princess, Wind Waker was the game that got me behind on everything, and I guess Skyward Sword was ok...but you don't visit the Tower of Hera 6 times in Link to the Past.

@Shadowlink

For the freakin' LAST TIME (WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?), it HURTS MY HANDS. I'm not going to buy a GOD DAMN XL for ONE F'N GAME. EVEN THEN, I'M STUCK LOOKING AT A SMALL AS SHIT SCREEN.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? ARGH.

@Mr_Mustache

Yes, the recent games seem to be padded to an extreme with fluff content... tasks that are either repetitive or just plain annoying from the get go. Somewhere along the way, they decided that a Zelda game needs to be 60 hours long and it's not a good thing. It really hurts replayability. There is nothing wrong with the length of ALBW because the whole game is a pleasure. At no point am I groaning or cursing Aonuma's name, which certainly hasn't been the case since 1998.
01/03/14, 00:21
@Hinph

The backtracking in Skyward Sword was absurd. It was funny the first two times, and after that, GROAN. Re-exploring a cleared DUNGEON? What is this?? (And no, its not like Ocarina of Time where you gotta go back and bomb a wall because you didn't have bombs yet.)

There was all that bellyaching about Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time and how "it should be bigger!" The solution, Twilight Princesses HUGE SPANNING FIELD, where it takes you LONGER to travel anywhere. Why freakin' WHY? And then everything is miles apart in Wind Waker (WHY), so much so that they add a faster Sail in the HD re-release.

Link to the Past and Legend of Zelda are the PERFECT size. Do that again.
01/03/14, 00:26
@Mr_Mustache I'd agree with everything except Pokemon. EVERY time Nintendo announces there will be a Pokemon game on the console, we get SO excited, only to have our hopes and dreams squashed. We wind up getting something like Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness or Pokemon Colleseum or Pokemon Rumble. A Pokemon console game is really that talk of pipe dreams around this place. I'm sure there are a couple purists, but rest assured, we've all dreamed of a full, big budget Pokemon game for years on the console.

And I wonder if that really has anything to do with it - budget. Nintendo typically just doesn't seem like the kind of company that spends a lot of money on development. How many HD "remakes has the Wii U gotten already, 3 (Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wind Waker HD)? We also got New Super Mario Bros. U which was probably a lower budget affair. Mario 3D World is great but I'm not sure it was as comparitvely a big project as the Galaxy games.

I think they were shy about entering the HD era to begin with because they didn't want their game development costs to skyrocket. I think when we see games jump ship to handhelds, it's mainly Nintendo saying "Hey, we can sell just as many copies of this game by spending a fraction of the money." And when the 3DS is selling gangbusters while the Wii U isn't doing too hot, it just makes their choice even easier. They've just put themselves in a super awkward situation.

The low budget, high selling game, or the higher budget, riskier, less selling game? Is it hard to see why they're doing what they're doing? I wanna see more games on Wii U for sure (because right now there's no point in me getting anything multiplatform on it, essentially), but from a business standpoint I can see why they're doing what they're doing. They just didn't prepare enough for either the 3DS or the Wii U and now they're playing catch up.

@PogueSquadron

Yeah, because for SOME reason they won't release a mainline Pokemon game on a console. They release a steaming pile of crap, and then go "WHELP, POKEMON DOESN'T WORK ON CONSOLES!"

They should just re-release the Red/Blue stuff, and start consoles over at #1. They can be bigger, sure, so we can kinda 'catch up' in a sense, but I don't need access to 700+ critters off the bat. Who does? Heck, those 700 shouldn't even be in the same universe.

The Wii U isn't doing too hot because it "doesn't have games." I think its fine, other people are waiting on Smash Bros. or Mario Kart or mainline Zelda or other. "The Direct Sequel to Link to the Past, exclusively on Wii U" would surefire get someone's attention. Shrugarama, what can ya do? Talk about what would've/might've been? Does us no good, and the Wii U still "has no games."

@carlosrox

Dude, relax. Take a deep breath, all that ire is not good for you.

I'm going to drop my two cents in the argument and say that I honestly make no distinction between handheld/home console game except for the fact that handheld games should come with a easy way to save at any point during game-play, a feature which most games should by now, but some still have designated save points in order to keep up tradition.

As such it is really silly to argue about why X-game is on a handheld and Y-this other handheld game is receiving a sequel on a home console or vice-versa. At the end of the day you folks have to realize that this is a business. The way Nintendo operates, they make games exclusive to a certain console in order to drive-up demand. That way more people buy the console and they profit. That would be like asking why doesn't Microsoft put out a Halo game on PlayStation 3/4.

I realize that they are not identical situations because in this case Nintendo owns both 3DS/Wii U but the same principle still applies. Do you honestly think that people would buy the 3DS like they have if all of its marquee titles (Pokemon/ A unique Zelda/Luigi's Mansion/ a new Mario Kart (for over two years) was available for the Wii U people would still buy it en masse? Sure, it would probably still get sales, but arguably not as many as it does by Nintendo differentiating it and putting out quality exclusives for it.
01/03/14, 00:46
@Mr_Mustache

Nothing is wrong with me. None of that stuff is preventing you from playing. You're choosing to let it.

Why should anyone be sympathetic to complaints that ultimately derive from your own choices?
01/03/14, 01:02
It's perfectly fine to be upset that cool titles are coming out for a platform you don't enjoy playing. Everyone just has to let it go.

All this discussion should really make people realize is that Nintendo, on their own, is not big enough to support two platforms at the same time. They never have been. If Luigi, Fire Emblem, etc came out on Wii U, the 3DS library just wouldn't be as good as it is. One of the two platforms is going to get the short end of the stick. Wii U still got Mario and Wonderful 101 and Pikmin, etc.
01/03/14, 01:42
@PogueSquadron

Oh my God, if Pikmin 4 comes out on 3DS.....
01/03/14, 01:44
Miyamoto has wanted to do a handheld Pikmin for awhile now. I bet it'll happen eventually.
01/03/14, 01:46
Yeah I know it sucks. I honesty wish Nintendo was bigger and could support both platforms better, but since they botched the Wii U launch, they're just hedging their bets on 3DS right now most likely. I can't wait for some meatier games to hit the Wii U. I still need to play Pikmin (still haven't played the first two either whoops. Not sure if I'm that interested in W101 anymore.

What I'd love to see is Nintendo take some of their 3DS projects and out them on the Wii U eShop. Or at least do a dual platform release. They have all these games coming out...why not do some more porting?
