Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

I actually didn't expect such reviews, so I wonder what's up. Perhaps Nintendo finally bought some scores... :/

Eh? These are pretty standard for a new 3D Mario game. A little lower, overall, than the Galaxy games, though a handful of the reviewers admit to liking 3D World more.

@Hinph It isn't standard for a Mario game based on a handheld title, or a game with multiplayer but no online. Plus, the general apathy towards the game until now made me think that wasn't going to change.

Not sure if this was already posted or not, but this was pretty great. (got it from a post on Dynablade's Facebook)

@GameDadGrant

I love the 1:34 min mark. A great theme song mixed with a great song from gaming. Thanks for the post. And thanks to Dynablade!

Reviews added to the OP. Many of them anyway.

It's certainly standard for an EAD Tokyo game. Doubting them would be unwise at this point.

@Jargon

True enough, although it did seem that most outlets were pretty doubtful about this game being THAT good (at least, around E3 time). It's great to hear that they've come around since playing it, and it really bodes well for the strength of the game's design.

I think the thing is people saw it as being based off of Super Mario 3D Land, which although loved "for a handheld game" is often considered a step down from Mario's best.

But... this is a not a handheld game and apparently they went all out on it.

(Not saying handheld games are bad, just that the standards seem a tad lower...)

You've actually got a point and I've been thinking the same thing over the years.

Nintendo games (especially Mario ones) always seem to score really high. And yes, I am aware they are great games but there are numerous other great games that get trashed. Mario games almost never ever get anything lower than like an 8.5 from most reviewers. There is the occasional dipshit who gives it lower, I won't deny that, but for the most part it's usually universal praise. Even the NSMB games rate really high, and people seemed to have a problem with their general existence.

It almost seems weird. As if they think they have to give Mario a higher score cuz he's frickin' MARIO.

People just have an issue with NSMB because it's a B+ subseries from an A+ IP/studio. I don't think we'll ever see a bad Mario platformer in our lifetimes.

@Zero

If anything, it was that my expectations were to have the next Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Something big. Something more than a follow up to a handheld game (which I absolutely loved by the way). But people weren't really having high expectations either. I mean this is the Wii U and we already got the 2D sidescroller game. The next Mario game was sure to be that follow up we all wanted... but then it wasn't. Still, this of course looks incredible and I can't wait until Friday.

I don't like games unless they're "big", especially platformers.

@Guillaume

Well to have something follow up after Galaxy would've had to be big. That game immediately wowed people. 3D World? It felt uninspired and bland (though still looked fun). That second trailer should've been the first to not leave people so disappointed.
11/20/13, 16:38
I didn't think the first trailer was bland. It showed the cat suit, playable Peach, the Kuribo skate, multiplayer, the return of the charging chucks... it was a pretty awesome first trailer.

This is just yet more evidence that Nintendo making great games is just not enough for lots of people. They have to tailor games exactly to what they specifically want most. It goes without saying that this is impossible. But because people grew up with Nintendo, they somehow think they are entitled to it. I'd consider the attitude to be some kind of disorder, but it's so common place, it must be a fairly typical psychological response. I wish there was a cure.

Well I think in terms of "bigness", one thing a lot of people look back to is the opening moments of Mario Galaxy. Not the tutorial stuff where you're chasing the rabbits, but the scene where you're in front of Peach's castle at the Star Bit festival. It's such a wonderful moment and a look into Mario's world. I don't think that Mario needs a twisting story or anything like that, but little moments like that IMO go a long way into elevating a game from a "simple romp through levels" to "a grand experience." Something like that feels way more engaging than a 3 second cutscene of someone getting kidnapped, and then you're promptly kicked onto a "map." The latter just isn't as immersive. I know we don't all look for that stuff in a Mario game, but I look for that kind of absorbing presentation in almost any game. Having amazing gameplay and levels and ideas is one thing, but having that while ALSO tying it together with insane production values, and context setting situations is the whole package. Even in Galaxy, where you're running around the little observatory, it feels like you're far away from the Mushroom Kingdom on some grand adventure.

That being said....3D World looks freaking awesome, and I can't wait to download it. Hope that we don't take Nintendo's servers down at midnight tomorrow night!

The opening of Super Mario Galaxy is soooo slow. Yes, the part with the attack on Peach's Castle is cool. Sure. But there is so much BS at the beginning of the game. So many dialog boxes to click through. It's the opposite of absorbing.

You know what's absorbing to me? Turning the game on and being able to start playing less than one minute in.

I think there is some rose-colored glasses effect going on here. People only remember the good and not the bad, and so the present just doesn't compare well to people's selective memory.

It would be interesting if people today started Galaxy from a new save file, timed themselves and played only the first 10 minutes from the moment they started the game.

@PogueSquadron

And I thought Galaxy's opening was overly drawn out and makes it much less likely I'll ever play it from scratch again.

And yet, somehow, I don't think Nintendo was failing in its obligations to me when they dared to make a design choice that I didn't agree with and I managed to accept it without huffing and puffing in dozens of posts about how they've lost their way.
11/20/13, 17:08
Oh yeah, that's why I made it a point to mention that the scene with Peach's Castle was amazing. The rest of Galaxy's beginning is HORRIBLY slow. It takes forever just to even get to the Honeybee Hive. There's so much text at the beginning of that game, and you're just running around catching bunnies and learning how to collect stars and stuff.

But the little scene with Peach's Castle is great. All the little mushroom people celebrating and having fun, with the beautiful night sky backdrop. And then BAM Bowser shows up and things get real. It's after that, from what I remember, where the game grinds to a halt, and you're bombarded by text box after text box after text box.

Edit: It's not unlike the opening of Mario 64, where you're just plopped right outside the castle. It's Peach's Castle! And you get to run around it. You never really got to experience something like that in a game before. You were really in a "place", in another world. I like the recent 3D Mario games a lot but there's no effort to really try to do that kind of stuff, for better or worse. You're not really in a "place" as much as you're in a random grouping of wacky levels for some reason. Everyone has their preferences, and I can definitely see why someone would prefer, say, Galaxy 2 and 3D Land's approach over Mario 64's castle/hub.
