Well I think in terms of "bigness", one thing a lot of people look back to is the opening moments of Mario Galaxy. Not the tutorial stuff where you're chasing the rabbits, but the scene where you're in front of Peach's castle at the Star Bit festival. It's such a wonderful moment and a look into Mario's world. I don't think that Mario needs a twisting story or anything like that, but little moments like that IMO go a long way into elevating a game from a "simple romp through levels" to "a grand experience." Something like that feels way more engaging than a 3 second cutscene of someone getting kidnapped, and then you're promptly kicked onto a "map." The latter just isn't as immersive. I know we don't all look for that stuff in a Mario game, but I look for that kind of absorbing presentation in almost any game. Having amazing gameplay and levels and ideas is one thing, but having that while ALSO tying it together with insane production values, and context setting situations is the whole package. Even in Galaxy, where you're running around the little observatory, it feels like you're far away from the Mushroom Kingdom on some grand adventure.
That being said....3D World looks freaking awesome, and I can't wait to download it. Hope that we don't take Nintendo's servers down at midnight tomorrow night! |

Oh yeah, that's why I made it a point to mention that the scene with Peach's Castle was amazing. The rest of Galaxy's beginning is HORRIBLY slow. It takes forever just to even get to the Honeybee Hive. There's so much text at the beginning of that game, and you're just running around catching bunnies and learning how to collect stars and stuff.
But the little scene with Peach's Castle is great. All the little mushroom people celebrating and having fun, with the beautiful night sky backdrop. And then BAM Bowser shows up and things get real. It's after that, from what I remember, where the game grinds to a halt, and you're bombarded by text box after text box after text box.
Edit: It's not unlike the opening of Mario 64, where you're just plopped right outside the castle. It's Peach's Castle! And you get to run around it. You never really got to experience something like that in a game before. You were really in a "place", in another world. I like the recent 3D Mario games a lot but there's no effort to really try to do that kind of stuff, for better or worse. You're not really in a "place" as much as you're in a random grouping of wacky levels for some reason. Everyone has their preferences, and I can definitely see why someone would prefer, say, Galaxy 2 and 3D Land's approach over Mario 64's castle/hub. |
