Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

Welp, finished Champion's Road. With Peach. Feels like cheating to use her but whatever, not even going to try it with anyone else.

So that's it. Game finished. Can finally start Pikmin 3 one of these da... oh wait, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is coming soon. ARGH.

Don't give up! Trust your instincts!!

I'm still breaking away from that last world while I work on my Luigi play through.

Early March I will finally be able to play this game 4 players!! Hyped!!!

I finished the main game. I'm on Star World or whatever it's called.

I rented this game from the library (even though I'm still midway through 3D Land). Pretty fucking awesome, man. Great stuff. Every single level was both unique and an absolute joy. I love the way that Nintendo can take a few simple, elegant game mechanics and endlessly vary and finesse the level design to keep the experience fresh, surprising, and fun, regardless of the overall context. This game is what gaming should be about.

I love how you can stack power-ups, and a giant ice skate? Are you kidding me?! The fact that it was so easy to lose made it even cooler, somehow.

I'm definitely picking it up the next time I see that it's on sale. [/cheap]

Seriously, though, the amount of shit that people talk about the Wii U kind of makes me sad, when it has such fantastic games on it.

That said, I also checked out Mario & Sonic at Sochi. Gotta say, NOT fantastic.

Finally put this one in the "Finished" pile over the weekend...conquered World Crown with all green stars (I had to use Peach on Champion's Road, but I think her glide made one specific part of that level harder that it should have been). I know how to get the last five stamps, but I'm giving this one a breather for now to keep it fresh (aside from the four levels I've already done with all five characters).

Fantastic game, the best Mario game on the system easily.

Hey so...does the game have an installation or something? It's been sitting at the not-quite-out-of-the-Wii-U-menu screen for about five minutes now, with the music skipping occasionally. I wonder if I got a bad disc from GameFly. It has a few scratches, but doesn't look that bad...

@nate38

Hmmm. Nah, that doesn't sound normal.

Perfect fucking game. Best Mario yet.

Whoa, that sounds funky. Definitely looks like you got a faulty disc.

Still won't work, even after cleaning. Shipping it back, I guess!

World Crown is the worst thing ever.

We don't need no stinking checkpoints!

@Shadowlink

After successfully doing it once, I was able to repeat that much easier after. Just keep at it man!

@DrFinkelstein

In a little while

I just spent most of the last week finishing off the rest of the game and unlocking it. At the moment I'm calling bullshit.

(Finishing every level with every character though? That's even more bullshit)

@Shadowlink

It is bullshit.. and I did it... like a lunatic. I couldn't stand looking at this game after that. If I went back now I know I'd have fun again.

Yesterday I finally managed to get through Champion Road with Rosalina. Only took me a few hours worth of attempts. But as @DrFinkelstein says, after beating it once it seems to get a lot easier; I got through the level with Peach on my first attempt today, despite not being able to get through the Beep Block section with her previously.

Now, the male characters - that's another matter. Holy crap I suck at playing as them now! Can't get the timing down anywhere! Great level and challenge though.

I went through it with Luigi, no powerups. It was my official, belated sendoff to the Year of Luigi. The pulse rings part at the end...so frustrating to get zapped by one coming from off-screen.

Also, I totally forgot you could bounce on top of the wall-walking spiny beetle dudes in that one part, so I was doing precision wall-jumps to avoid them entirely. It took forever.

@nate38
Pretty much all of my runs are no-powerup-runs since I die so much and it would be too time consuming to go back and forth getting new stuff.

But now I've only got Toad left, and I doubt I'll be able to do that without something to help me. I think I'd better find a tanooki suit somewhere for this.

EDIT: Yeah, the ol' raccoon dog flutterin' did the trick for Toad. But I'm not ashamed!

@nate38

What I did there because going between them sucked and so did bouncing off them,... I just killed them with butt-bounces. Once they were gone, I was free to move up without pain.

@DrFinkelstein Haha, another thing I didn't realize was an option. And it's not like I hadn't seen those things before, I guess I just assumed the last stage would make things way too difficult and prohibit you from touching them at all.
