Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

Nice pic! …Er, is that yours?

I liked the Plessie stages too, I think the change in camera angle really helped and they felt pretty dynamic because of it. Sorry you weren't thrilled with the game by the end; I felt it was generally very fun but it wasn't quite up there with the best of the series for me.

I thought worlds 7, 8 and especially Star were all rather awesome, though, and I think it would've been great if all the worlds were on that level of quality.

A buddy of mine and I played through the whole game up to the very last level and then gave up. We had a great time. To me, the game is nothing more than a fun excuse to spend time with a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while. It's more Mario. Not stale like the NSMB series; just fresh enough to stand on its own without really blowing me away.

Nintendo gamers who don't like a perfect Nintendo game.

What is wrong with this world?

Who doesn't like it?

Have any of you seen these "attackingtucans" comments? Like every stage I finish has like 3 or 4 comments about attackingtucans pop up afterwards, apparently he is some Youtube Let's Play dude. No idea how he got so many mentions, maybe told his followers to go post about him but still like... it's like a good 20% or so of the posts I'm seeing mentioning him, how many fans does he have?!

Oh man, 'dat boss rush. Just spent a good 2-3 hours or so to beat it. And now it is way past my bedtime. ARGH.

@Zero
The final one? Yeah it took me a few tries. It's the timer that kills you.
01/21/14, 13:20
@carlosrox Is that the final stage? I thought there was one more uber killer stage once you get all of the stars / etc. in every other stage?

And yeah you pretty much need to do everything perfectly timewise, although once I realized that with a Tanooki tail you can jump on the one Hisstocrat then bounce and fly directly to the other to hit them both in one run then the time became less of an issue... although it was still pretty tough since they are the only boss fight you can power-up in (maybe I shouldn't have kept doing that one first?!)

@Zero
Actually there's a few more levels (one small world with 3 or 4 hard stages) after that.

You must complete all collectibles first though to unlock it.

Then there's still one final challenge which is to finish every level with every character. An insane amount of content this game has.

Hmm, down to the last 2. Even though no particular parts of it have been rough so far, this Mystery House Marathon is kicking my butt a bit because one little mistake and it's over.

Haven't even tried Champion's Road yet.

@Zero
I've made it maybe halfway through that level but am purposefully taking a bit of a break to focus more on my second game with Luigi. Didn't try the other levels there yet.

This game honestly gets better each time I put it. The graphics are amazingly deceptive. It looks MUCH better than one realizes. I ain't the only one who feels that way. My brother who has a love hate relationship with Nintendo very much agrees. I didn't even notice how truly stunning it looked til I was near the end. And it just got more noticeable each time I played.

The lighting is REALLY something else. The game is obsessively detailed; people complaining about the graphics at all are seriously, just..wrong.

It warms my heart when I read a few others' opinions and they "get" the game just as I do. It's a much better Mario game than the other 3D ones. And notice I said MARIO game. 3D World captures the essence of Mario so much better than any other 3D Mario does. From music to personality to art to level design to gameplay mechanics, it's not even funny how well they emulated the feel of Mario 3 and Mario 4 in 2013.

I really can't drive that point home any better. It just legitimately saddens me when people leave this game with disappointment.

Nostalgia aside I'd probably have to say this is the best Mario game ever when all is said and done. And I currently haven't had the luck of playing anything more than 2 players either!!!!

@carlosrox

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You give 3D World the praise it deserves better than I ever could.

@carlosrox

3D World really does look like how I've always thought a next-gen Mario game would look. You know, when you were a kid and closed your eyes and pictured what Mario games would look like in the future. 3D World really nails that look, in large part due to the lighting. It's such a nice looking game.

@carlosrox

Have you been seeing casper's posts on Miiverse about the tech behind the game's visual effects? I've caught a couple, and it's really interesting stuff.
01/23/14, 06:35
@Secret_Tunnel

Yeah, I've read a couple of his posts and they go pretty in depth. I'm surprised he can explain all that just by looking at the game. Do you know if he works with gaming engines? His knowledge of lighting techniques seems really vast.

Finished the game with my wife. Safe to say this is an amazing game, if only because it's a 3D Mario that my wife actually can play properly. Such a good blend of 2D mechanics with 3D gameplay, I loved every minute of it (though I got quite the taste for this type of play in Super Mario 3D Land). We were legit surprised to have the last world after the bowser castle in World 6, even though it was a repeat boss fight. Those final stages were awesome, and the final fight where Bowser turns in to a cat was great. Still gotta go after those extra stages, I can't wait!

@Abdooooo

I think game lighting tech is his specific job, if I'm not mistaken. Guess that's how he knew all about Wii Sports Resort's shadows.

@Secret_Tunnel
Can't say that I have! Very interested now.

I took on Champion's Road for the first time yesterday and promptly died fifty times. I made it to the third star though, so I had to be near the end...right?
01/31/14, 16:27
@ludist210

Yeah, you're doing pretty well if you only died 50 times before getting that far. I may have died 50 times before getting the first star!
